Chapter 8 - Midnight at the River Terminal

The old river terminal had been closed for nine years.

Broken windows.

Rusting tracks.

Black water beyond the loading platform.

Leonardo arrived at 11:57.

Cassandra sat beside him.

Neither spoke.

A single lamp burned inside.

They entered.

Marcus Vale waited near the platform.

Sixty-two.

Gray hair.

Dark overcoat.

Calm expression.

The prayer book rested on a table.

Leonardo stopped twenty feet away.

“Give it to her.”

Marcus looked at Cassandra.

“You know who you are now.”

Cassandra’s voice shook.

“Elena’s daughter.”

“And Antonio Russo’s legal heir.”

“No.”

Marcus smiled.

“Legally, yes.”

Leonardo understood.

“That is what you wanted.”

Marcus nodded.

“The Russo holdings were built through Antonio.”

“After his death, Leonardo inherited.”

“But Elena’s legal child could challenge certain trusts.”

Cassandra stared.

“You arranged my adoption.”

“Yes.”

“You encouraged my relationship with Leonardo.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus smiled.

“Because marriage consolidated the claims.”

Leonardo’s eyes hardened.

“You put us together to combine control.”

“Exactly.”

Cassandra looked sick.

Marcus continued.

“Victor always thought I wanted the Vale company.”

“I wanted something larger.”

Leonardo said:

“My father’s network.”

Marcus nodded.

“And Elena’s evidence.”

He touched the prayer book.

“Together, they control half the people your father once bribed.”

Cassandra stepped forward.

“So why call us here?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because you are the only person who can open it.”

She frowned.

“It is a book.”

Marcus smiled.

“Not inside.”

He opened the cover.

A small metal lock had been built into the spine.

No keyhole.

Only a circular depression.

Cassandra stared.

Marcus pointed to her necklace.

A necklace she had worn since childhood.

A small silver medallion.

Victor had told her it came with her adoption papers.

Cassandra touched it.

Marcus said:

“Your mother designed the lock.”

Leonardo looked at Cassandra.

She removed the medallion.

It fit perfectly.

The spine clicked.

Inside the hollow book was a miniature tape reel.

Several signed statements.

And one sealed document.

Marcus reached for it.

Leonardo stepped forward.

Marcus raised a gun.

“Don’t.”

Cassandra froze.

Leonardo stopped.

Marcus smiled.

“There he is.”

“Antonio’s son.”

Leonardo’s voice remained quiet.

“I am nothing like him.”

Marcus laughed.

“You run his empire.”

“I rebuilt what was left.”

“You kept the name.”

Leonardo stared at the gun.

“That does not make me him.”

Marcus looked at Cassandra.

“Open the envelope.”

She did.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not hers.

Leonardo read the visible name.

LEONARDO MARIA RUSSO.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is that?”

Cassandra read further.

Father:

Blank.

Mother:

Maria Bellini.

Leonardo stared.

“My father’s name is missing.”

Marcus smiled.

“Because Antonio was not your father.”

Silence.

Cassandra looked at Leonardo.

Marcus enjoyed it.

“Maria was carrying another man’s child when she came into Antonio’s house.”

Leonardo’s face did not move.

“Who?”

Marcus pointed to Victor.

Not physically.

With one sentence.

“Ask Cassandra’s father why you and she were never allowed genetic testing before the wedding.”

Leonardo’s stomach dropped.

Cassandra whispered:

“No.”

Marcus smiled wider.

Then headlights swept across the broken windows.

A car had arrived.

Marcus turned.

That was his mistake.

Leonardo moved.

One step.

One strike.

The gun hit the concrete.

Cassandra kicked it away.

Marcus fell against the table.

The prayer book slid.

Leonardo grabbed him by the collar.

“Who is my father?”

Marcus laughed through blood on his lip.

“You still don’t understand.”

The terminal doors opened.

Victor Vale stood there.

Behind him:

Maria.

Mrs. Miller.

And me.

Maria shouted:

“Leonardo!”

He turned.

Victor looked at Marcus.

Then at the birth certificate.

His face collapsed.

Marcus smiled.

“Tell him, brother.”

Leonardo looked at Victor.

Victor whispered:

“I am not your father.”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

May you like

Then he looked at Leonardo.

“I am.”
