Chapter 9 - The Last Lie

Nobody spoke.

The river moved beyond the terminal.

Black water.

Cold wind.

Marcus stood slowly.

Leonardo stared at him.

“You?”

Marcus smiled.

“Maria and I were young.”

Maria looked sick.

“Do not make it sound like love.”

Leonardo turned to her.

“What happened?”

Maria stepped closer.

“Marcus wanted information about Antonio.”

“He used me.”

Marcus shrugged.

“She used me too.”

Leonardo’s voice sharpened.

“Enough.”

Maria looked at her son.

“I became pregnant.”

“Did Antonio know?”

“Not at first.”

“When did he learn?”

“The night Elena died.”

Leonardo looked at Marcus.

“You were there.”

Marcus nodded.

“I was.”

Victor whispered:

“He came after Elena sent him a message.”

Leonardo turned.

“Elena knew?”

Maria nodded.

“She knew everything.”

Leonardo looked at the birth certificate.

“So Antonio knew I was not his.”

“Yes.”

Maria’s voice broke.

“And he still raised me?”

“For six years.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“Raised is generous.”

Leonardo ignored him.

“Why didn’t he kill me sooner?”

Maria answered:

“Because I became Elena.”

“As long as I played the role, he could pretend the child belonged to his wife.”

Leonardo understood.

His father’s pride had protected him.

Until it did not.

Marcus stepped closer.

“I killed Antonio before he killed you.”

Leonardo looked at him.

“That does not make you my father.”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

Leonardo continued.

“A father does not hide his son’s mother for twenty-two years.”

Victor looked at Marcus.

“He did not order Maria hidden.”

Everyone turned.

Leonardo frowned.

Victor continued.

“I did.”

Cassandra whispered:

“Dad…”

Victor looked at Maria.

“I thought I was protecting Leonardo.”

Maria stared at him.

“You signed the commitment papers.”

“Yes.”

“You paid the facility.”

“Yes.”

“You told them I had dementia.”

“Yes.”

Leonardo stepped toward him.

“Why?”

Victor looked at Marcus.

“Because Marcus threatened to reveal Leonardo’s parentage.”

Leonardo frowned.

“So?”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“Antonio’s remaining loyalists would have killed you.”

Maria closed her eyes.

Victor continued.

“Marcus told me Maria had to disappear until the organization stabilized.”

Leonardo looked at Marcus.

“And then?”

Marcus said nothing.

Victor answered.

“Then years passed.”

“And you kept her there.”

Victor nodded.

“I became afraid of what would happen if she came out.”

Cassandra looked at her father with disgust.

“So you turned fear into twenty-two years.”

Victor lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Mrs. Miller stepped forward.

“You men always had reasons.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at Victor.

“Antonio had reasons.”

“Marcus had reasons.”

“You had reasons.”

“And women kept losing their names.”

Silence.

Leonardo looked at Maria.

Then at Cassandra.

Then at the portrait evidence.

The entire family had been built on women erased from records.

Elena.

Maria.

Cassandra.

Mrs. Miller.

Even I had been ordered to remove truth through a kitchen door.

Leonardo turned to Marcus.

“What do you want now?”

Marcus pointed at the prayer book.

“The statements.”

“And?”

“The Russo organization.”

Leonardo almost smiled.

“You are sixty-two.”

Marcus frowned.

“And after all this, you still want a chair.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“I built half of what you inherited.”

Leonardo said:

“Then watch me dismantle it.”

Marcus froze.

Victor looked at him.

Cassandra stared at Leonardo.

He continued.

“The bribed judges.”

“The illegal accounts.”

“The blackmail files.”

“All of it.”

Marcus laughed.

“You would destroy your own power?”

Leonardo looked at Maria.

Then at Cassandra.

“Yes.”

Marcus’s expression changed for the first time.

Real fear.

Leonardo picked up the prayer book.

Marcus lunged.

Victor moved first.

He grabbed his brother.

The two men fell against the table.

The gun slid across the floor.

Marcus reached for it.

Cassandra kicked it into the river.

Marcus shouted.

Leonardo’s guards rushed in.

He had not come without security.

He had simply kept them outside.

They restrained Marcus.

Marcus stared at Leonardo.

“You think the police will protect you?”

Leonardo looked at the prayer book.

“No.”

He held up Elena’s statements.

“But these might make them protect themselves.”

Victor looked at Leonardo.

“What happens to me?”

Leonardo stared at him.

“The same thing that happens to Marcus.”

Cassandra whispered:

“Leonardo…”

He looked at her.

She understood.

No exceptions.

No family protection.

No more hidden rooms.

Victor lowered his head.

“I deserve that.”

Maria began crying.

Not because Victor would be arrested.

Because for the first time in twenty-eight years, someone had stopped choosing which truth was convenient.

Leonardo walked toward her.

She touched his face.

“Leo.”

He closed his eyes.

May you like

Then said:

“Come home.”
