Chapter 3 - The File Sebastian Never Expected Her to Read

Luca did not plug the drive into his computer.
Emma noticed.
Good.
At least someone in the room respected unknown devices.
Marco brought a separate laptop from security.
No network connection.
No house files.
Nothing important to compromise.
Emma sat across from it.
Luca stood behind her.
“You know the numbering?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I helped create the reconciliation system Sebastian’s firm still uses.”
Marco looked at Luca.
Luca looked at Emma.
“You left that off the résumé.”
“I left many things off a résumé written in a diner at midnight.”
The drive opened.
Six folders.
Dates.
Account codes.
Transfer references.
Emma’s exhaustion disappeared.
This was a language she understood.
Not because the numbers were simple.
Because people always believed numbers could hide intent.
They could not.
Not forever.
She opened the first ledger.
Twenty-four transfers.
All below an internal review threshold.
All routed through different vendors.
All ending at the same clearing institution.
Emma leaned closer.
“That pattern is deliberate.”
Luca’s voice stayed quiet.
“Explain.”
“If you move one large amount, someone asks why. If you divide it into smaller amounts under the automatic review level, most systems treat them as ordinary.”
Marco frowned.
“Money laundering?”
“Maybe. Maybe theft. Maybe both. I need the source account.”
She opened another file.
Then stopped.
CASTELLANO FAMILY TRUST.
Luca’s expression changed.
“Who can authorize that account?”
“Me. My sister could before she died. The trustee.”
“Who is the trustee?”
Luca did not answer.
Marco did.
“Crane Fiduciary.”
Emma turned.
“Sebastian?”
“His firm bought the trustee company three years ago.”
The room became silent.
Emma kept reading.
Transfer after transfer.
Not enough to destroy the Castellano fortune.
Enough to become invisible inside it.
Then she saw the beneficiary code.
LC-17.
“Leo.”
Luca’s voice came from behind her.
“What?”
Emma pointed.
“If your nephew’s full legal name is Leonardo Castellano—”
“It is.”
“Then this subaccount is probably his.”
Luca placed both hands on the desk.
Very carefully.
“How much?”
Emma calculated.
Then recalculated.
“Just over eight million.”
Marco swore under his breath.
Luca did not.
That was worse.
Emma opened the approval logs.
Her heartbeat changed.
“Luca.”
He leaned closer.
“What?”
“There are two authorization signatures.”
His.
And another.
A. CASTELLANO.
“My sister.”
“When did she die?”
“Eighteen months ago.”
Emma looked at the dates.
The newest approval was six weeks old.
“No.”
Luca understood before she explained.
“My sister could not have signed that.”
“No.”
Marco stepped toward the door.
“Boss, I’ll get Sebastian Crane.”
“Not yet.”
Marco stopped.
Luca looked at Emma.
“Why would Belini carry evidence that implicates her brother?”
“That is exactly the question.”
Emma scrolled.
One folder remained.
PERSONAL.
Inside were photographs.
Belini entering Luca’s building.
Belini meeting Sebastian in a hotel lobby.
Belini speaking with a man Emma did not recognize.
Then one image made Luca take the laptop from her.
His sister.
Alessia Castellano.
Alive.
Standing beside Sebastian Crane.
The date in the corner was three days before her death.
Emma studied Luca.
“You knew they met?”
“No.”
His answer came too quickly to be anything except truth.
A second photograph showed Alessia leaving.
She was holding the same black flash drive now sitting beside Emma’s hand.
Luca stared at it.
“So the drive was hers.”
Emma nodded slowly.
“Or she copied it.”
“Why would Belini have it?”
Nobody answered.
Then footsteps ran down the corridor.
The housekeeper appeared.
Pale.
“Mr. Castellano.”
Luca turned.
“What happened?”
“Leo is gone.”
Everything inside Luca changed.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
He simply became dangerous.
“When?”
“I checked his room two minutes ago.”
“Security?”
“Every gate is locked.”
Marco was already moving.
Luca looked at Emma.
“Stay here.”
She stood.
“No.”
His gaze hardened.
“This is not a discussion.”
Emma pointed toward the photographs.
“Belini knew I was coming. Sebastian’s files are in your house. Now Leo disappears ten minutes after we open them.”
Luca stopped.
Emma met his eyes.
“If this is connected, I may notice something your people won’t.”
A long second passed.
Then Luca nodded.
“Five minutes.”
May you like
“For what?”
“To find my nephew.”
