Chapter 7 - The Husband Who Planned Her Next Life

Emma did not cry.
That surprised her.
Sebastian had controlled money.
Friends.
Schedules.
Clothes.
Even silence.
But the thought that he had arranged the first night of her life without him felt different.
It felt like discovering the door had opened into another room he owned.
Luca watched her from across the study.
“Emma.”
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not.”
She looked at him.
“Do not become kind now. I may throw something.”
The corner of his mouth moved.
Belini stared.
“You two are impossible.”
Emma turned on her.
“You helped him.”
“Yes.”
“How much of my divorce did you know about?”
Belini hesitated.
Enough.
“Everything,” Emma said.
“Not everything.”
“You knew he withheld the payment.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He needed you angry enough to leave immediately.”
Emma’s stomach turned.
“The diner.”
Belini frowned.
“What?”
“He knew I would need housing.”
“Yes.”
“The advertisement was waiting.”
“Yes.”
Luca became very still.
“You placed it?”
Belini shook her head.
“Sebastian did.”
Marco returned with a tablet.
“Boss. The posting account was created through a staffing broker. Payment originated from Crane Holdings.”
Luca looked at Belini.
“Why would my house manager accept it?”
“She didn’t know who paid to promote it. The listing itself was real.”
Emma laughed once.
Of course.
Sebastian did not invent the door.
He only made sure she saw it.
“Then he expected me to come here.”
“Yes.”
“And he expected Luca to investigate me.”
“Yes.”
“And he expected me to find the trust theft.”
“Yes.”
Emma crossed her arms.
“What was I supposed to do next?”
Belini looked toward Luca.
“Convince him I found it independently. Gain access. Earn trust.”
“I already had the skills.”
“That is why Sebastian chose you.”
The sentence landed badly.
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“Chose?”
Belini glanced at him.
“Not romantically.”
“That was not my concern.”
Emma almost smiled despite herself.
Then stopped.
“Where does the marriage agreement fit?”
“It doesn’t.”
Belini sounded genuinely unsettled.
“Sebastian never expected that.”
Luca looked toward the unsigned folder.
“Neither did I.”
That was probably true.
Which made it the first thing tonight nobody had planned.
Emma sat again.
“What evidence did Sebastian want moved?”
Belini answered.
“Alessia’s original authorization files.”
“Where are they?”
“I don’t know.”
Luca looked at the recorder.
“Leo’s box?”
“No. Those are copies.”
Emma frowned.
“How do you know?”
“Because Alessia told me the originals were somewhere Sebastian could never enter without being seen.”
Luca’s eyes shifted.
His legitimate office?
A bank?
A family vault?
Emma thought differently.
“She said ‘enter.’ Not access.”
Belini looked at her.
Emma stood.
“Where did Alessia go every day where Sebastian would look suspicious?”
Luca answered.
“The preschool.”
Everyone turned.
Leo’s school.
Alessia had taken him herself.
Even with drivers.
Even with guards.
“She volunteered in the library,” Luca said slowly.
Marco was already reaching for his phone.
Emma stopped him.
“Wait.”
Luca looked at her.
“If Sebastian planned this far ahead, he may be watching obvious places.”
“You have another idea?”
“Yes.”
Emma looked at Belini.
“Call him.”
Belini went pale.
“No.”
“Tell him Luca found nothing.”
“He won’t believe me.”
“Good.”
Emma leaned closer.
“Then tell him I found something.”
Luca’s gaze sharpened.
Belini understood.
“You want to see what he asks for.”
“I want to know what scares him.”
Marco shook his head.
“Too risky.”
Emma looked at Luca.
“This is not your decision.”
His eyebrows lifted.
Belini almost laughed.
Emma continued.
“It is my ex-husband. My life. My name. My choice.”
Luca said nothing for a long moment.
Then:
“Speakerphone.”
Belini dialed.
Sebastian answered on the first ring.
“Did you get it?”
Not hello.
Not are you safe.
Did you get it?
Belini looked at Emma.
“No.”
Silence.
Then Sebastian said, “Where is Emma?”
Emma stepped closer to the phone.
“Right here.”
Another silence.
Longer.
“Emma.”
Her name sounded exactly as it had across seven years of breakfast tables.
Possessive.
Certain.
She hated that she still recognized the tone.
“Sebastian.”
“What did you find?”
Emma looked at Luca.
Then at the recorder.
“A file Alessia left for Luca.”
Sebastian stopped breathing.
Only for a second.
But Emma heard it.
“What file?”
She smiled without warmth.
“The one you hoped I would destroy for you.”
The call ended.
Marco looked at the phone.
“That answers something.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
Luca understood.
“It tells us he’s afraid.”
May you like
Emma looked toward the dark windows.
“But not what he is afraid we’ll find.”
