Chapter 3 - The Name Beside Pier 17

Luca did not return Isabella to the mansion.

He took her to a private apartment above one of his hotels, a place known only to three men and now Emma.

No staff.

No photographs.

No Belini.

On the dining table, the old ledger lay beneath a brass lamp.

Luca read every line.

Emma watched him circle repeated container numbers.

Isabella sat across from him with both hands around a cup of tea.

“Your father found money missing from the port accounts,” she said.

“How much?”

“He never told me.”

“Did he tell Domenico?”

“He told me he was going to confront someone he trusted.”

Luca looked at the handwritten warning.

Do not trust the man who calls me brother.

“Why didn’t you give this to police?”

Isabella’s mouth tightened.

“Because the detective who came to our house the morning after your father died wore a watch your father had given Domenico.”

Luca stopped.

“What?”

“I recognized it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You were twenty-three and already trying to become a man before you had finished being a son.”

His face hardened.

“That wasn’t your decision.”

“No.”

Isabella accepted the blow.

“It was my mistake.”

The room went silent.

Emma moved closer to the ledger.

One mark appeared beside three payments.

D.F.

“Domenico Falcone,” she said.

Luca shook his head.

“Too obvious.”

“You think someone wanted it to look like him?”

“I think my father never wrote full names in sensitive records.”

Isabella frowned.

“He did when he trusted the person reading them.”

Luca looked at her.

“Who was supposed to read this?”

“My father gave me a key.”

She opened her purse.

A small brass key rested in her palm.

“Two days before he died.”

Luca took it.

Stamped into the metal were four numbers.

2714.

“A safe-deposit box?”

“I think so.”

“Which bank?”

“He said I would know if I ever needed to.”

Emma looked again at the ledger.

Pier 17.

Container numbers.

Payments.

Then she noticed a narrow column on the far right.

Initials repeated beside several entries.

SVB.

“Bank,” she said.

Luca followed her finger.

“South Valley Bank.”

Isabella’s eyes widened.

“Your father kept an account there before you were born.”

Luca stood.

“We go in the morning.”

A knock came at the door.

Three controlled taps.

Luca’s hand disappeared beneath his jacket.

“Who?”

“Marco.”

His security chief entered alone.

He carried a tablet.

“Domenico’s house is empty.”

“Cars?”

“One gone. Driver gone. His phone is off.”

“Airport?”

“Nothing yet.”

Marco placed the tablet down.

“There’s more.”

Security footage from the engagement dinner filled the screen.

Domenico Falcone.

Silver hair.

Black tuxedo.

Calm smile.

At 8:41 he spoke to Belini near the terrace doors.

At 8:42 Belini walked directly toward the service corridor.

Emma leaned closer.

“That was before she found Mrs. Valenti downstairs.”

Isabella shook her head.

“She already knew I was there.”

Luca’s gaze sharpened.

Marco changed the angle.

Domenico slipped something into Belini’s hand.

A folded note.

Two minutes later Belini entered the service hallway.

“What did he give her?” Emma asked.

“We don’t have sound,” Marco said.

Luca watched the footage again.

Then again.

Belini touched Domenico’s wrist before walking away.

Not affection.

Fear.

“She was scared of him,” Emma said.

Luca did not answer.

His phone rang from a blocked number.

Everyone looked at it.

He answered.

“Luca.”

Belini’s voice.

Breathing fast.

“Don’t hang up.”

“Where are you?”

“That isn’t important.”

“It is to me.”

“I need you to listen.”

Luca looked at Marco.

Marco was already tracing.

Belini continued.

“Domenico told me your mother was confused.”

“Did he tell you to keep her downstairs?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

Luca’s voice became colder.

“Why?”

“Because he said she had documents that could destroy families.”

“Which families?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Try again.”

Belini inhaled.

“My father owed him money.”

Emma looked up.

Luca did not move.

“He said if I let Isabella speak to you, he would collect the debt from my brother.”

“What does that mean?”

Belini’s voice cracked.

“You know exactly what men like him mean.”

Luca’s eyes hardened.

“And you chose to humiliate my mother instead of telling me.”

“I thought I could delay her. I thought I could get the papers first.”

“Why?”

“Because I was trying to understand what was true.”

“No.”

Luca looked at Isabella.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Belini said nothing.

Marco held up one finger.

Trace found.

He wrote an address.

The Palmer House garage.

Luca saw it.

“Stay where you are.”

Belini panicked.

“Luca—”

The line went dead.

Marco checked the tablet.

“She moved.”

“Toward?”

He looked up.

“South Valley Bank.”

The brass key sat between Luca’s fingers.

Emma understood first.

“She knows about the box.”

Luca stood.

“No.”

May you like

He slipped the key into his pocket.

“Someone told her.”
