Chapter 4 - The Box His Father Never Opened Again

South Valley Bank opened at nine.

Luca arrived at eight fifty-three.

Marco had already secured a private meeting with the branch manager.

Emma came because Isabella refused to let Luca go alone with men whose loyalty had not yet been tested.

“I trust Emma,” she said.

Luca had looked at the maid.

“So do I.”

Neither commented on the sentence.

The safe-deposit vault smelled like metal and cold air.

Box 2714 slid across the private table.

Luca inserted the brass key.

The manager used the bank key.

Two locks turned.

Inside sat three objects.

A sealed letter.

A small cassette tape.

And a photograph.

Luca picked up the photograph first.

His father, Antonio Valenti.

Domenico Falcone.

And a younger man Emma did not recognize.

All three stood beside stacked shipping containers at Pier 17.

On the back, Antonio had written:

Three men built it. One man sold us.

Luca’s thumb covered the third man’s face.

“Who is he?” Emma asked.

“My father’s accountant. Peter Raines.”

“Alive?”

“No. Car accident. Six months before my father died.”

Luca opened the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably Antonio’s.

Luca,

If you are reading this, I was right to be afraid.

Domenico has been moving money through companies Peter created. Peter tried to stop him. Peter died.

I have proof of the transfers and one recording of Domenico admitting enough to destroy him.

Do not confront him alone.

Do not trust anyone who benefits from my silence.

Especially anyone he suddenly brings close to you.

Luca stopped reading.

Emma felt the meaning before he said it.

“Belini.”

His eyes lifted.

“She met Domenico before she met me.”

Marco swore quietly.

The vault door opened.

The branch manager stepped in.

“Mr. Valenti, there is a woman demanding to speak with you.”

Belini.

She entered without her red gown.

For the first time Emma had ever seen her, Belini looked ordinary.

Gray coat.

Hair pulled back.

No diamonds.

No performance.

Luca placed the letter flat on the table.

“How did you know we were here?”

Belini looked at the brass key.

“Domenico told me about the box years ago.”

Isabella’s face tightened.

“You knew?”

“Only that Antonio had hidden something.”

Luca stepped closer.

“When did Domenico bring you close to me?”

Belini swallowed.

“Five years ago.”

“Why?”

She did not answer.

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“My father’s business was collapsing. Domenico offered to save it.”

“In exchange for you?”

“No.”

Belini’s eyes filled.

“In exchange for access.”

Emma understood.

“To Luca.”

Belini nodded.

“He wanted introductions. Schedules. Which advisers you trusted. Which deals mattered.”

Luca’s face became stone.

“And you gave him that.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I stopped.”

“When?”

“The year you proposed.”

Luca laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“That makes it better?”

“No.”

Belini looked at the cassette.

“That is why I came.”

Luca’s gaze sharpened.

“What do you know about it?”

“Domenico has been searching for that tape for eleven years.”

“Why?”

“Because Antonio recorded a meeting at Pier 17 the night before he died.”

Marco looked at Luca.

The cassette player had been brought from storage before they arrived.

Luca inserted the tape.

Static.

A chair scraping.

Then Antonio’s voice.

“You moved money without authorization.”

Domenico answered.

“You built an empire and left me to count crates.”

“You stole from me.”

“I took what I earned.”

“You killed Peter.”

Silence.

Then Domenico:

“Peter made a choice.”

Antonio:

“And now you want me to make one.”

Domenico:

“Walk away from the port.”

Antonio:

“No.”

A long pause.

Then the sentence that changed the room.

Domenico said, very calmly:

“Then tomorrow your son inherits everything.”

The tape clicked off.

Nobody moved.

Isabella covered her mouth.

Luca stared at the machine.

Belini whispered, “That is why he needed the box.”

Luca turned toward her.

“You knew this existed.”

“I knew a recording existed. I never heard it.”

“Did you know he killed my father?”

Belini’s silence lasted too long.

“Answer me.”

“I suspected.”

Luca stepped back as if distance were the only thing keeping his anger controlled.

“You were going to marry me Saturday.”

“I know.”

“You let me sit beside the man who killed my father.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was my mother.”

Belini flinched.

Luca picked up the cassette.

“Where is Domenico?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then you are useless to me.”

Belini’s face changed.

“No.”

She reached into her coat.

Marco moved instantly.

“Slowly.”

Belini removed a small hotel keycard.

“He has a room under another name.”

She placed it on the table.

“The Drake. Suite 1106.”

Luca looked at Marco.

Marco was already calling men.

Belini’s voice stopped him.

“He won’t be there.”

Luca turned.

“Why?”

“Because that room is not where he sleeps.”

“What is it?”

Belini looked at the cassette.

“Where he keeps the people he needs leverage over.”

Emma felt cold.

“Who is there now?”

Belini’s eyes moved to Isabella.

“Your old driver.”

Isabella stood.

“Salvatore?”

May you like

Belini nodded.

“He saw what happened the night Antonio died.”
