Chapter 7 - The Vault Beneath Union Station

Belini reached vault 417 first.

She did not reach what was inside.

Luca’s security team closed the east concourse before she could leave.

No shouting.

No weapons.

Just four exits becoming unavailable at the same time.

Emma entered the underground vault corridor with Luca beside her.

Belini stood ten feet away.

The red coat she had thrown over her gown made her look like a wound in the gray hallway.

A metal box sat on the table.

Unopened.

Belini looked at Emma.

“You should have left this buried.”

Emma held up the key.

“My mother didn’t.”

Belini laughed once.

“She didn’t understand what she found.”

“Then explain it.”

Belini looked at Luca.

He said nothing.

That seemed to frighten her more.

Emma inserted the key.

The lock turned.

Inside the box were ledgers.

Photographs.

Three cassette tapes.

And a handwritten list of companies.

Dante opened the first ledger.

Vescari firms.

Moretti subsidiaries.

Payments.

Dates.

Initials.

Then a name that appeared beside nearly every suspicious transfer.

R.M.

Luca stared.

“Rafael Moretti.”

Emma looked at him.

“Who?”

“My father’s cousin.”

Isabella’s former financial director.

Dead fifteen years.

Dante flipped another page.

Rafael had been the inside man.

The Vescari patriarch moved money through outside companies.

Rafael approved it from within Moretti Maritime.

Matteo discovered both sides.

Emma’s mother had copied the records.

That was what got them hunted.

Belini leaned against the wall.

“My father was right.”

Emma looked at her.

“About what?”

“If this came out, it would destroy both families.”

“No.”

Luca’s voice was calm.

“It destroys the people who did it.”

Belini shook her head.

“You still think names separate cleanly from crimes.”

Emma looked at the photographs.

One showed Matteo speaking with a man outside a marina.

Another showed the same man beside Alessandro’s father.

A third showed Rafael Moretti entering the maintenance company that serviced Matteo’s boat.

Proof.

Not complete.

But enough to show conspiracy.

Dante found an envelope beneath the ledgers.

It was addressed to Vittorio.

Emma opened it.

Her mother’s handwriting.

If Matteo dies, Rafael knows why.

Emma handed it to Luca.

He read it once.

Then closed his eyes.

His own family had helped kill his uncle.

The Vescari family had helped pay for it.

And Vittorio had spent years protecting the companies from the consequences.

Belini watched him.

“That is why Vittorio created the second will.”

Luca looked at her.

“You’ve seen it?”

“My father showed me a copy.”

Emma’s attention sharpened.

“What does it say?”

Belini looked at her.

“If Matteo’s child is found alive, control of his shares transfers immediately.”

“I know.”

“That isn’t the dangerous part.”

Luca stepped closer.

“What is?”

Belini’s face tightened.

“Vittorio gave Matteo’s child the right to reopen every internal Moretti investigation sealed after Matteo’s death.”

Dante stopped turning pages.

Emma understood.

The inheritance was not only money.

It was access.

Authority.

A legal key to everything powerful men had buried.

Belini whispered, “Your existence can expose thirty years of crimes.”

Emma looked down at the vault box.

Then at the key in her hand.

Her mother had not hidden money.

May you like

She had hidden permission.

And for the first time, Emma understood why everyone had been so afraid of her coming home.
