Chapter 9 - The Last File Belini Tried to Burn

They found Belini at the old Moretti records house near the river.

By the time Luca arrived, smoke was coming from one upstairs window.

Emma stepped out of the car.

Luca blocked her path.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“We agreed.”

“This is different.”

“No secrets. No deciding what I can handle.”

His jaw tightened.

She waited.

Then he moved aside.

“Stay behind me.”

“That was not part of the agreement.”

“It is now.”

Despite everything, Emma almost smiled.

Inside, sprinklers had already activated.

Dante’s men moved through wet corridors.

No flames remained.

Only smoke.

Paper.

And the smell of something old being destroyed.

They found Belini in the archive room.

The former attorney stood beside her.

A metal waste bin smoked between them.

Half-burned files covered the floor.

Belini looked exhausted.

Not glamorous.

Not untouchable.

Just trapped.

Luca’s voice stayed quiet.

“What did you burn?”

The attorney answered first.

“Nothing that matters.”

Dante picked up a scorched page.

Matteo Moretti.

The attorney stopped talking.

Emma looked at Belini.

“You knew he was coming here.”

“Yes.”

“You came to help him.”

Belini shook her head.

“I came to stop him.”

Luca stared.

“Then why run?”

“Because no one would believe me.”

Emma looked at the waste bin.

“I don’t.”

Belini laughed.

“Neither would I.”

Then she reached into her red coat.

Dante moved.

Belini slowly removed a flash drive.

“I copied everything before he started burning it.”

The attorney swore.

Belini looked at her father’s oldest legal fixer.

“For twenty-four years you told us survival required silence.”

She placed the drive on the table.

“I’m tired of surviving your way.”

Luca did not soften.

“You tried to steal the envelope.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my mother.”

“I frightened her.”

“You raised your hand.”

Belini looked away.

“Yes.”

Emma watched her.

Belini was not innocent.

But she was no longer pretending to be.

The attorney suddenly moved toward a side door.

Dante caught him before he made two steps.

A folder fell from beneath his coat.

Emma picked it up.

Inside was a signed marine maintenance authorization.

The repair on Matteo’s boat.

Approved by Rafael Moretti.

Countersigned by Alessandro Vescari’s father.

And witnessed by the attorney now being held against the wall.

Luca read it.

The room went silent.

That was the missing proof.

Not rumor.

Not suspicion.

A chain.

Money.

Authorization.

Conspiracy.

Matteo had not died in an accident.

Emma closed her eyes.

For twenty-four years, she had been the child of a dead man nobody would name.

Now she knew why.

Belini looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma opened her eyes.

“For which part?”

Belini had no answer.

That was honest too.

Luca gave the file to Dante.

“Copy everything.”

Then he looked at Belini.

“The engagement is over.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You will testify.”

Another nod.

“And if you lie—”

Belini almost smiled.

“I know that too.”

Emma looked at the wet papers scattered across the floor.

Matteo’s death had been hidden to protect an alliance.

Her identity had been hidden to protect a fortune.

And now both were ending in a room full of ruined files.

But one document remained untouched.

May you like

Vittorio’s second will.

And tomorrow, Emma Carter would decide whether she wanted the life it gave her.
