Chapter 5 - The Name Inside Luca’s Father’s File

They reached the monastery at dusk.

No tourists.

No monks.

No sign that anyone had prayed there in decades.

The stone doors were open.

That was the first problem.

The second was the red scarf tied to the iron gate.

Belini’s.

Marco touched it.

“Fresh.”

Emma looked at Luca.

“She came here?”

“Or someone wants us to believe she did.”

Marianne entered last.

She knew the corridors without asking.

That disturbed Luca.

“So you’ve been here before.”

“Many times.”

“With my father?”

“Yes.”

“With Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“With Vittorio?”

Marianne stopped.

“Once.”

The underground chamber lay beneath the ruined chapel.

Circular stone.

No windows.

One bronze door.

At its center waited two keyholes.

Brass.

Silver.

Emma held one key.

Marianne had given her the other.

Luca stayed back.

Daniel’s note had been clear.

Never let a Moretti enter alone.

Emma inserted both keys.

Nothing happened.

Ferrante frowned.

“The phrase.”

Emma looked at him.

“Blood remembers the door.”

“No.”

Marianne shook her head.

“The old form.”

Emma understood.

She spoke the words exactly as her grandfather taught her.

The locks turned.

Not loudly.

Almost politely.

The bronze door opened.

Inside waited no treasure.

No gold.

No diamonds.

No bearer bonds.

Only shelves.

Ledgers.

Film reels.

Photographs.

Sealed envelopes.

Names.

Thousands of them.

Luca stood in the doorway.

“This is what my family spent three generations searching for?”

Marianne looked at him.

“Your family thought it was leverage.”

“What is it?”

“History.”

Marco opened the first ledger.

His expression darkened.

“Payments.”

Another.

“Judicial appointments.”

Another.

“Police transfers.”

Ferrante whispered, “This could burn half of Sicily.”

Luca moved toward a shelf marked MORETTI.

Emma saw him stop.

A file waited under Antonio Moretti’s name.

His father.

Luca opened it.

The first pages were ordinary enough.

Business.

Properties.

Political favors.

Then a sealed testimony.

Antonio Moretti had written it himself.

Luca read silently.

His face changed.

Emma stepped closer.

“What?”

He handed her the page.

Antonio had discovered Vittorio was using the archive to blackmail judges and redirect Moretti port contracts.

Daniel Carter had been hired to audit the shell companies.

He found the pattern.

Antonio helped him copy the records.

Then the final paragraph.

If Daniel dies, Vittorio did it.

If I die, Vittorio did that too.

Luca did not move.

Marco swore.

Marianne watched Luca.

“Your father knew.”

“He knew he was going to die.”

“He suspected.”

“And he stayed?”

“He was trying to get you out.”

Luca looked at her.

“I was twenty-six.”

“He was still your father.”

Silence.

Then Emma found Daniel’s file.

Her hands shook before she opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her parents.

Younger.

Laughing.

Happy.

Behind it, Daniel’s handwriting.

MARIANNE, IF I FAIL, EMMA MUST NEVER KNOW UNTIL SHE IS SAFE.

Emma closed her eyes.

Her anger became grief again.

Marianne stood beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma did not answer.

A metallic click echoed behind them.

Everyone turned.

Vittorio Bellini stood in the doorway.

Gun lowered at his side.

Belini beside him.

Red coat.

Pale face.

Luca’s men raised weapons.

Vittorio smiled.

“You finally opened it for me.”

Luca looked at Belini.

“Voluntary?”

She shook her head once.

Vittorio pressed the barrel against her ribs.

“Enough questions.”

Emma looked at the shelves.

“You killed my father for this?”

Vittorio shrugged.

“Your father mistook numbers for morality.”

Luca’s face became very still.

“And mine?”

Vittorio smiled wider.

“Antonio mistook friendship for protection.”

There it was.

Confession without regret.

Marianne stepped forward.

“You won’t leave with the archive.”

“No.”

Vittorio looked at Emma.

“I only need one file.”

“Which one?”

“The Keeper succession.”

Emma frowned.

Marianne’s face changed.

Vittorio saw it.

“There.”

He smiled.

“You never told her.”

Emma turned.

“Told me what?”

Marianne stayed silent.

Vittorio looked delighted.

“The Keeper does not merely guard the archive.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“What else?”

Vittorio pointed toward a locked black box on the lowest shelf.

“That box decides who controls every hidden Moretti trust created after the war.”

Emma stared at Luca.

He stared at the box.

And Vittorio said the one thing that made the room colder.

“The legal beneficiary is not Luca Moretti.”

May you like

He looked directly at Emma.

“It is you.”
