Chapter 6 - The Inheritance Nobody Wanted

Emma laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the alternative was screaming.

“I serve tables.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Not according to the trust.”

Luca looked toward Marianne.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

Emma turned on her mother.

“Of course you did.”

Marianne did not defend herself.

Ferrante approached the black box.

“No one touches it.”

Vittorio raised the gun slightly.

“You misunderstand your position, Professor.”

“No.”

Ferrante looked at Emma.

“He misunderstands his.”

The box had no keyhole.

Only a circular plate engraved with the same phrase Emma had corrected in the restaurant.

Blood remembers the door.

Marianne spoke quietly.

“It opens for the living Keeper.”

Emma stared.

“I am not putting my blood on anything.”

“Good,” Luca said.

Vittorio’s eyes moved to him.

“You don’t get a vote.”

Luca’s mouth almost curved.

“That is rarely true.”

Marco’s men had spread along the walls.

Vittorio noticed.

Belini noticed too.

She moved half an inch away from his gun.

Enough.

Emma saw it.

So did Luca.

Vittorio tightened his grip.

“Open the box.”

“No.”

Emma surprised herself with how easily the word came.

Vittorio looked annoyed.

“Your father died because he said no.”

The room stopped.

Emma went pale.

Luca took one step.

Vittorio aimed at him.

“Another step and Belini dies first.”

Belini’s jaw tightened.

“You really are a terrible father.”

Vittorio glanced at her.

Mistake.

She drove her heel down on his foot and twisted away.

Marco moved.

One shot hit stone.

Another hit nothing.

Then Vittorio was on the floor with three guns aimed at him.

No one died.

No one needed to.

Luca picked up Vittorio’s weapon.

“You talk too much.”

Belini stood breathing hard.

“I learned from him.”

Emma looked at her.

For the first time, neither woman disliked the other enough to matter.

Vittorio laughed from the floor.

“You think this changes anything? Open the box and see what Antonio did.”

Luca looked at Emma.

“Your choice.”

That mattered.

Emma walked to the box.

Not because Vittorio wanted it.

Because she was tired of people hiding her own life from her.

She placed her palm against the metal plate.

Nothing.

Marianne frowned.

Then Emma noticed the engraving.

Not blood.

Voice.

She spoke the old phrase.

The box opened.

Inside rested one envelope.

One document.

One recording cylinder.

No fortune.

Emma unfolded the document.

The Moretti Custodial Trust.

Created thirty-two years earlier.

Beneficiary: the surviving Reed Keeper.

Control rights: dormant unless the archive was unlawfully accessed by either founding family.

Emma stared.

“I don’t understand.”

Ferrante did.

“The trust was a safeguard.”

Luca read over her shoulder.

“If either family tried to weaponize the archive, control over certain hidden assets transferred to the Keeper.”

Vittorio’s expression finally changed.

“Not certain assets.”

Marco took the pages.

His eyebrows rose.

“Ports. Holding companies. Art storage. Luxembourg accounts.”

Luca looked almost impressed.

“How much?”

Marco kept reading.

“Enough.”

Emma stepped away.

“I don’t want it.”

Vittorio laughed.

“It doesn’t matter what you want.”

Luca turned.

“It matters to me.”

Emma looked at him.

He meant it.

That complicated things.

Marianne took the recording cylinder.

“Antonio left this for the day the trust opened.”

Ferrante found an old player built into the box.

The recording crackled.

Then Antonio Moretti’s voice filled the chamber.

Luca stopped breathing.

To my son, if you are hearing this, I failed to keep the old war from reaching you.

Luca closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

The Keeper is not your enemy.

The Keeper is the reason you still have a family to inherit.

Emma looked at Luca.

Antonio’s voice weakened.

Daniel Carter saved your life once.

Marianne saved it twice.

If Emma survives long enough to hear this, protect her choice.

Vittorio shouted from the floor.

“Turn it off.”

Nobody did.

Then Antonio said:

And if Vittorio Bellini is still alive, do not believe he acted alone.

The recording ended.

Silence.

Emma looked toward Belini.

Belini had gone white.

Luca turned slowly.

“Who helped your father?”

Belini whispered, “I don’t know.”

Vittorio smiled.

May you like

That was answer enough.

Someone else was still missing.
