Chapter 7 - The Father Behind the Locked Door

The house stood near the end of a narrow road on Long Island.
No guards waited outside.
No expensive cars filled the drive.
Only a weathered porch light burned above a plain wooden door.
Luca knocked once.
Then waited.
A man opened the door.
Older than the photographs.
Thinner.
Silver at his temples.
There was a pale burn scar across his left hand.
"Lu," Alessandro whispered.
For a moment neither moved.
Emma stood a few steps behind Luca with Matteo, close enough to hear but unwilling to intrude.
Luca had imagined this reunion on the flight home.
He had imagined relief.
Instead he asked, "Whose body did I bury?"
Alessandro lowered his eyes.
"Vittorio's."
Luca's face hardened.
"Your driver?"
"Yes."
"His family buried an empty coffin."
"I know."
Luca stepped inside.
"Then start explaining."
They sat in a modest living room, the kind of room where nobody would guess a man once ruled the Moretti organization.
Alessandro spoke without trying to soften anything.
Three years earlier, he had discovered that Nabil Farouk and Raffaele Vescari were altering the emergency succession plan.
They wanted outside trustees to gain controlling authority over Moretti holdings during a manufactured leadership crisis.
Alessandro intended to cancel the arrangement and bring the documents to a prosecutor.
That night, an explosive device damaged his car.
Vittorio died.
Alessandro escaped through the passenger door before the vehicle caught fire.
A private security operative approached, claiming to be from a federal witness unit.
He told Alessandro that Luca had been named in forged transfer orders and would be arrested if Alessandro reappeared without independent evidence.
"So you hid," Luca said.
"I let them believe I was dead. I thought I could gather the proof and keep you safe."
"By leaving me to bury the wrong man?"
Alessandro looked at his scarred hand.
"That was the worst thing I've ever done."
"It wasn't the only thing. You let Vittorio's family live with a lie."
"Yes."
Emma watched Alessandro accept the accusation.
There was no clever excuse.
No appeal to family loyalty.
At last Luca asked, "Barcelona?"
Alessandro explained that he had tracked Nabil to the trade congress the following year.
From a nearby meeting room, he learned that the Black Crown annex had been altered again.
He left before the negotiation ended, frightened that his presence would expose the people helping him.
"You knew Nabil was still moving against me," Luca said.
"Yes."
"And you still didn't contact me?"
"Every message I tried to send through the family was intercepted. I didn't know who was compromised."
Matteo's expression tightened.
"You could have contacted me directly."
"I tried once," Alessandro said. "Your office forwarded the message to Belini."
The room went silent.
Emma remembered her own message disappearing through the same channels.
Belini had not needed to control every Moretti soldier.
She had controlled access to Luca.
"What does the annex actually say?" Emma asked.
Alessandro studied her.
"You must be the interpreter."
"I'm the woman whose career they destroyed."
He nodded once.
"Then you deserve an answer. The revised annex gives a spouse or appointed partner the power to request a leadership review if Luca is declared unfit. Two outside trustees can approve an interim transfer of voting shares."
"And Belini becomes his spouse soon," Emma said.
"Exactly."
Luca stood.
"They planned this wedding as a corporate seizure."
Alessandro said nothing.
That silence was confirmation enough.
Emma looked toward the documents stacked beside the fireplace.
"Where is the original annex?"
"In the custody of an independent escrow lawyer. She won't release it without a second signature."
"Whose?"
"Marcello Vieri's."
Luca laughed once, without humor.
"The man who watched me search for a grave."
"He was frightened. I trusted him to preserve the original, not to tell the truth."
Emma understood what had happened.
A powerful man had kept too many secrets, assuming secrecy would protect his family.
And others had built an entire deception inside the space he left behind.
Luca approached the door.
Alessandro rose.
"Lu."
His son stopped without turning.
"There is something else you need to know."
"What?"
"The Black Crown vote isn't waiting for your wedding. They moved it forward."
May you like
"When?"
"Tomorrow night."
