Chapter 8 - The Bride Who Needed a Verdict

Belini entered the Moretti boardroom wearing a dark-red tailored gown beneath a matching coat.

She looked as composed as she had at the gala.

Only the untouched coffee before her suggested she hadn't slept.

Raffaele Vescari sat beside her, flanked by attorneys.

Nabil Farouk remained in Barcelona, joining by secure video.

They expected a routine leadership review.

Luca had arranged for independent counsel to attend before anyone called the meeting to order.

"You have brought strangers into a private family matter," Belini said.

"The agreement creates outside rights," Luca answered. "It is already a legal matter."

She looked at the empty chair beside him.

"Where's your father’s lawyer?"

"Not the question you should ask."

Luca placed two versions of the Black Crown annex on the table.

The first was the original draft released by the independent escrow lawyer after Vieri supplied the required authorization.

It contained one narrow contingency: a temporary financial administrator could maintain payroll and essential contracts if Luca became incapacitated.

Nothing permitted a transfer of controlling shares.

The second document, the version given to Luca eighteen months earlier, contained an additional voting provision.

Belini's initials appeared beside the amendment.

She reached for the page.

"Those initials could be copied."

Emma, sitting beside the legal team, answered calmly.

"That's true. Which is why the initials aren't our only evidence."

Nabil's screen flickered.

"Why is the waitress here?"

"Because she knows what you said when you thought she wasn't listening," Luca replied.

Emma explained the Barcelona notes and the authenticated backup recording. She distinguished what she remembered directly from what the recovered audio established.

It mattered.

Luca could have accused everyone in the room.

But Emma's precision left less room for escape.

On the recording, Nabil discussed arranging an expert opinion to declare Luca unstable after a public incident.

Another voice referred to provoking him at an engagement event.

Belini's gaze snapped toward Emma.

The insult at the gala had been more than cruelty.

It was supposed to produce a confrontation the family could later use against Luca.

Emma hadn't been selected in advance for humiliation; her presence had complicated a plan already underway.

"You were trying to make him lose control," Emma said.

Belini looked toward Luca.

"He's dangerous. Everyone knows what your organization is."

"Then why did you agree to marry me?" Luca asked.

Belini hesitated.

"Because our families made promises."

"Promises aren't ownership."

Raffaele finally spoke.

"Luca, there are ways to settle this privately."

"You had three years to settle it privately."

"Think of what becomes public if you force the issue."

Luca nodded.

"I have."

The legal team explained that financial regulators had received an independently preserved evidence package and that a court had been asked to halt any transfer under the disputed annex.

The application included transaction records, certified correspondence and witness statements.

No one was being asked to take Emma's memory on faith.

Belini looked at the file.

"You'd let investigators into the Moretti organization?"

"They can follow the documents," Luca replied.

"Even if they find things you dislike?"

"Even then."

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she understood that the man she intended to control would rather expose his own empire than surrender it quietly.

Nabil ended the video connection.

Matteo made a note of the time.

Raffaele's attorney leaned forward.

"If my client withdraws from the agreement, can we avoid further proceedings?"

"That decision isn't mine alone," Luca said. "Not anymore."

Belini rose.

"You think Emma saved you. She doesn't understand what she's stepped into."

Emma met her gaze.

"I understood enough in Barcelona to know you feared a written record."

Belini smiled faintly.

"Then read the first annex again."

Emma looked down.

Behind the original annex lay a separate, post-crash instruction that had been retained in the escrow file.

Gabriel Serra had signed it.

The lawyer who had assured Luca his father's papers were genuine had also authorized delivery of the false death-identification packet.

The deception had begun before Belini ever wore an engagement ring.
