Chapter 11 - Vivian Romano’s Choice Between Her Father and the Truth

No one spoke for several seconds after Serra’s voice ended.
The room in Daniel’s uncle’s cottage seemed smaller than before, crowded by the dead and the choices of the living.
Vivian sat on the edge of a broken chair, still wrapping her injured hand.
“My father knew Serra had arranged Matteo’s death,” she said.
Alessandro turned toward her.
“You are certain?”
“I heard them argue about it when I was seventeen. I did not understand the names then. Years later I did.”
Claire held Daniel’s letter.
“And you stayed silent.”
“Yes.”
“You approved the manifests.”
“Yes.”
“You went to Daniel in the clinic.”
“Yes.”
Each answer came without defense.
Claire almost preferred lies. Lies could be fought. Truth this ugly simply sat between them.
Vivian looked at Alessandro.
“My father told me the Moretti family would destroy ours if the old route became public. He said Serra was necessary because he knew where every body was buried.”
Alessandro’s expression hardened.
“Some of those bodies were ours.”
“I know.”
“When did you know Daniel survived the crash?”
“The day after he woke.”
“And when did you know Serra had him moved?”
Vivian hesitated.
Claire stepped closer.
“When?”
“Three days after I visited.”
Claire’s grip tightened on the letter.
“You knew he disappeared.”
“I knew he had been transferred. My father told me Serra was moving him somewhere safe because Daniel had threatened to expose everyone.”
“Safe.”
Vivian looked ashamed.
“I believed what I needed to believe.”
Claire thought of all the people who had described silence as protection.
“Where is your father now?”
Vivian took out her phone.
“I don’t know. He left Villa Moretti during the blackout.”
Alessandro stared at her.
“You had your phone collected.”
“I kept a second one.”
“Of course you did.”
Vivian ignored the sarcasm and opened a secure messaging app.
“There.”
A message from Cesare had arrived twenty minutes earlier.
COME HOME. THIS CAN STILL BE CONTAINED.
Below it was a location pin.
A Romano estate near Bologna.
Paolo returned from outside.
“Serra’s abandoned car is on the farm road. He took another vehicle.”
Alessandro showed him the message.
Paolo frowned.
“If Serra and Cesare are together, going there openly gives them time to destroy evidence.”
Claire looked at Daniel’s flash drive.
“We already have evidence.”
“Enough to expose the route,” Alessandro said. “Maybe enough to prove Serra threatened Daniel. Not enough to prove what happened after San Luca.”
Claire hated the careful language.
Not enough.
Always not enough.
Emma tugged her coat.
“Mommy, can we go home?”
Claire knelt.
“Yes.”
“Which home?”
The question broke something gentle inside her.
Their old apartment was gone. Villa Moretti had never been home. Daniel’s uncle’s cottage belonged to an estate trust.
Claire touched Emma’s cheek.
“Wherever we are together.”
Emma seemed satisfied.
Alessandro arranged for Emma to be flown back to Villa Moretti with Rosa, who had been found and released from the pantry. Vivian insisted on going too.
Claire objected immediately.
“No.”
Vivian’s eyes narrowed. “I saved your daughter.”
“And I am grateful. That does not mean I trust you.”
“You should not.”
The blunt answer stopped Claire.
Vivian continued.
“But Serra thinks I have returned to my father. If I disappear now, Cesare will know I chose you.”
Alessandro understood first.
“You want to answer the message.”
“Yes.”
“Tell him you are coming.”
Claire stared at her.
“This is your father.”
Vivian looked at the floor.
“He has been my father every day I lied for him.”
For once there was no arrogance in her voice.
“Maybe I should find out what is left when I stop.”
They sent the reply.
I HAVE EMMA’S SONG. SERRA FAILED. I’M COMING.
Cesare answered within one minute.
BRING THE GIRL.
Claire’s vision went red.
Vivian looked sick.
“There. Now you know.”
Paolo quietly said, “He believes a three-year-old is leverage.”
Claire reached for the phone.
Vivian held it away.
“If you answer emotionally, he will know.”
“Emotionally?”
“My child is not a bargaining chip.”
“I agree.”
Claire stared at her.
Vivian typed:
TOO RISKY. MOTHER IS WATCHING HER. I HAVE THE CODE.
Cesare replied:
THEN COME ALONE.
Vivian exhaled.
Alessandro began planning before the screen dimmed.
The Romano estate had three entrances, private security, and a helicopter pad. Paolo knew two former guards. Caterina could contact a prosecutor in Milan who had quietly investigated customs fraud. Don Ricci, if he could be found, had influence with the families.
Claire interrupted.
“Ricci still has Daniel’s recorder.”
Alessandro stopped.
“Yes.”
“And no one knows where he is.”
Paolo checked his phone.
“I do now.”
A location alert had appeared from the tracker in Don Ricci’s sedan.
Claire looked at the map.
The car was parked outside the Romano estate.
Alessandro’s face turned unreadable.
Vivian whispered, “My father invited him.”
“Or Ricci chose him,” Paolo said.
Claire folded Daniel’s letter and placed it inside her coat.
One trusted man had already become a suspect.
Now the oldest man in the room, the one who had defended Claire after the slap, was standing at the enemy’s door with the only original recording Daniel had left.
They drove toward Bologna with Vivian’s phone silent between them.
Ten kilometers from the estate, another message arrived.
Not from Cesare.
From Don Ricci.
DO NOT LET VIVIAN ENTER THE HOUSE.

A second line appeared.
SERRA HAS BEEN WAITING FOR HER.
