Chapter 15 - The Doctor Who Had Hidden Daniel From Both Families

Mara Conti worked in a public clinic near Genoa’s old port.

She was fifty, dark-haired, tired-eyed, and unimpressed by Alessandro Moretti’s name.

When Paolo entered behind Claire, Mara’s face became stone.

“You.”

Paolo stopped.

“I deserve that.”

“You deserve worse.”

Claire stepped between them.

“My name is Claire Bennett.”

Mara looked at her.

Everything changed.

She locked the clinic door.

“Where is your daughter?”

“Safe.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then come upstairs.”

Mara’s apartment above the clinic was small and filled with books.

She did not offer coffee.

She pulled a photograph from a desk drawer and placed it in front of Claire.

Daniel stood on a harbor pier.

Thin.

Bearded.

Alive.

The date stamp showed nine months earlier.

Claire sat because her legs stopped working.

Nine months.

Five months after the crash.

Four months after San Luca.

He had survived.

“Where is he?”

Mara’s eyes filled with sympathy.

“I do not know.”

The answer hurt differently now.

Not as a closed door.

As a door left open in a storm.

Mara explained.

Daniel reached Genoa after Brother Luca contacted her through an encrypted message. He had infected wounds, a broken rib that healed badly, and severe headaches.

“He trusted no institution connected to the families,” Mara said.

“That includes Alessandro?”

“Yes.”

Alessandro accepted it silently.

“Daniel told me Serra had proof that Cesare and Vittorio Moretti had covered crimes for each other. He believed public exposure without preparation would cause witnesses to disappear.”

Claire looked at Paolo.

“And Elena?”

Mara’s face hardened.

“My sister discovered the route first. She wanted to go to authorities. Paolo begged her to wait one week while he gathered evidence.”

Paolo closed his eyes.

Mara continued.

“She died three days later in what police called a gas explosion.”

Paolo whispered, “I thought it was my fault.”

“It was not.”

He looked at her.

“Who?”

“Serra arranged it. Vieri executed it.”

Paolo’s face collapsed.

For years he had carried guilt built by the people responsible.

Claire understood that kind of cruelty now.

Mara turned back to her.

“Daniel wanted proof that would not depend on any family member’s testimony. So he began building a clean evidentiary chain.”

“From where?”

“Ports. Insurance archives. Customs backups. Old clinic invoices.”

“That is why he did not come home.”

“That, and he believed Serra was watching you.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“He was right.”

Mara nodded.

“Until six months ago.”

“What happened then?”

“Daniel decided he had enough. He planned to contact a European anti-corruption unit.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Did he?”

“I do not know.”

“You said you saw him nine months ago.”

“I saw him again six months ago.”

Claire stared.

“Where?”

“Here.”

“What did he say?”

“That he was going to meet someone who could authenticate the original Gate Four records.”

“Who?”

Mara hesitated.

“Don Ricci.”

Alessandro exhaled.

Again Ricci.

“Did Daniel trust him?”

“Not fully. He trusted his access.”

Claire asked the only question that mattered.

“Did he come back?”

“No.”

Her stomach dropped.

Mara reached across the table.

“But I received a message three weeks later.”

She opened an old phone.

One encrypted text remained saved.

SAFE. DO NOT REPLY. C + E STILL FIRST.

Claire touched the screen.

“C and E.”

“You and Emma.”

The message was dated five months and one week ago.

Daniel was alive five months ago.

Before anyone could move on, Mara opened a second drawer and took out a packet of photocopied prescriptions. Daniel had insisted she keep them because the dates proved where he had been after San Luca. Each page carried a different false name, but the same old injury notes followed him from clinic to clinic. Claire traced those marks and understood that his survival had not been one clean escape. It had been months of pain, borrowed identities, and constant movement.

Mara then showed them a bank deposit.

Two hundred euros had been placed into a relief fund under the reference BLUE RABBIT.

Date: seven weeks ago.

Claire could barely breathe.

“Was that him?”

“I cannot prove it.”

“Where did it come from?”

“A cash kiosk in Marseille.”

Caterina had said Daniel found Viviana near Marseille.

The circle tightened.

Alessandro called Caterina.

“No answer.”

Claire immediately felt dread.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Vivian, who had remained near the window, checked her own phone.

“I received something.”

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Caterina sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Behind her stood a tiled wall.

Across the image were four words.

BRING THE ORIGINAL MANIFESTS.

Claire looked at Alessandro.

“Serra is in custody.”

Paolo shook his head.

“Serra was not the entire network.”

Mara stared at the photograph.

“I know that room.”

“Where?”

“An old quarantine station outside Marseille.”

Claire looked at the cash deposit again.

Marseille.

Daniel’s trail.

Caterina’s abduction.

Original manifests.

Someone was drawing them toward the same place.

Alessandro’s phone rang.

Don Ricci.

He answered.

Ricci’s first words were not a greeting.

“Do not go to Marseille.”

Alessandro’s voice hardened.

“Why?”

“Because I know who took Caterina.”

“Who?”

May you like

Ricci was silent long enough to make Claire’s heart pound.

Then he said, “Daniel Bennett.”
