Chapter 5 - The Clinic Room Where Daniel Bennett Survived His Funeral

The private clinic outside Florence had changed names twice in fourteen months.

Its original owner had declared bankruptcy. The newer company specialized in cosmetic recovery for wealthy foreign clients. Nothing on the polished website suggested it had once hidden an injured auditor under a false identity.

Alessandro did not ask permission to enter.

He arrived just after dawn with Claire, Paolo, Don Ricci, and two lawyers whose presence made the administrator more cooperative than any threat could have.

Emma remained at Villa Moretti with Rosa and four guards Claire chose herself.

Leaving her felt like tearing skin.

But Claire needed to see room 312.

The administrator insisted the old records had been destroyed.

Alessandro placed Daniel’s photograph on the desk.

“This was taken in your building.”

The man adjusted his glasses.

“Many rooms look alike.”

Claire pointed to a faded blue border visible behind Daniel’s shoulder. “The wall tile has your former crest. I found it in archived photographs last night.”

The administrator looked at her differently.

He had expected grief.

He had not expected preparation.

Within twenty minutes, a storage key appeared.

Room 312 no longer existed. Renovations had combined three rooms into a rehabilitation suite, but an old service map showed its location at the end of a sealed corridor.

Claire stood where Daniel’s bed had been.

Nothing remained except a discolored patch on the wall and an obsolete nurse-call socket.

She pressed her fingers to the plaster.

He had been here.

Alive while she was choosing funeral flowers.

The thought was too large to absorb, so she turned it into work.

“Who treated him?”

The administrator searched paper invoices.

“A physician named Dr. Silvio Marchetti.”

Paolo swore.

Claire looked at him.

“You know him?”

“He used to handle injuries the families did not want reported.”

“Where is he?”

“No idea. He disappeared after Luca Vieri’s supposed death.”

Don Ricci scanned the ledger. “Not disappeared.”

He tapped an address.

Marchetti had continued receiving consulting payments through a shell company in Switzerland for three years.

The shell company was controlled by Romano Holdings.

Cesare’s name was nowhere on the page.

It did not need to be.

Claire found another entry.

Patient 312 had received treatment for fractured ribs, concussion, and smoke inhalation. No fatal injuries. On day eleven, a notation appeared in different handwriting.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZED. 02:10.

Destination blank.

“Who authorized it?” she asked.

The administrator shook his head.

“The old night logs may still exist in the basement.”

Paolo went with a clerk.

Alessandro remained beside Claire.

“You should sit.”

“I have sat for fourteen months.”

“That is not what I meant.”

“I know.”

She turned toward him.

“Did Daniel trust you?”

Alessandro took time before answering.

“Enough to send me information. Not enough to tell me about you or Emma.”

“Why?”

“Because anyone close to me became a potential target.”

“And yet he worked with you.”

“He approached me. He believed Gate Four was being used to move weapons components inside medical aid shipments.”

Claire stared.

“That is bigger than financial fraud.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected laundering. Not that.”

A door opened behind them.

Paolo returned carrying a bound logbook.

He looked sick.

“Transfer authorization has a signature.”

Claire held out her hand.

The signature read A. Moretti.

Alessandro’s full name was Alessandro Giovanni Moretti.

Claire looked at him.

His face was unreadable.

“You signed this?”

“No.”

“It looks like your signature.”

“I said no.”

Paolo examined it.

“It is close enough to pass.”

Don Ricci leaned over the page.

“Matteo could copy Alessandro’s signature when they were boys. Isabella used to complain about it.”

Alessandro shot him a look.

“Matteo was dead eight years before this.”

“Then someone else learned.”

Claire searched the bottom of the page.

A second mark appeared beside the authorization: LV.

Luca Vieri.

The supposedly dead deputy.

The clerk found one more item wedged between pages.

A pharmacy receipt.

Two vials of potassium chloride.

Claire knew enough from crime programs to understand why the room had gone silent.

“Would that kill someone?”

The administrator swallowed.

“In the wrong dose, yes.”

Claire’s legs weakened.

The crash had not killed Daniel.

Whatever happened in room 312 had not killed him either.

Someone had transferred him alive.

Someone using Alessandro’s forged signature had ordered drugs that could stop a heart.

She forced herself to read the next page.

At 02:25, Patient 312 left by ambulance.

At 03:40, the ambulance returned empty.

No destination recorded.

No death recorded.

No body recorded.

Claire stared at the blank line until the ink blurred.

“Where did they take him?”

No one answered.

Then an elderly cleaner appeared at the corridor entrance.

She had been listening.

“I know where.”

The administrator snapped, “Signora, this is private.”

She ignored him.

“I worked nights then.”

Claire stepped toward her.

“Please.”

The woman looked at Daniel’s photograph.

“I remember him because he fought them.”

Claire could barely breathe.

“Who?”

“Two men. One was Vieri. The other wore a doctor’s coat.”

“Marchetti?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where did they take my husband?”

The cleaner’s eyes filled.

“To the old San Luca monastery road.”

Paolo looked at Alessandro.

“There is no clinic there.”

The woman nodded.

“No clinic.”

May you like

She looked back at Claire.

“Only a cemetery.”
