Chapter 10 - While Damon Bled, Ivy Negotiated for His Entire Empire

Damon woke angry.

The first thing he asked was whether the council had broken the port agreements.

The second was whether Ivy was hurt.

The order annoyed her enough to be reassuring.

"Your priorities are defective," she told him.

He lay propped against hospital pillows, one shoulder bandaged and immobilized. Pain medication had softened none of the authority in his voice.

"Answer the second question."

"No."

"Good. Now the first."

"Catalina gave us twelve hours. Renard gave us six. Montreal is pretending not to panic."

"So they're panicking."

"Violently."

Rocco entered carrying three phones.

"And Gideon released a statement saying he's deeply concerned about the attack on his nephew."

Damon closed his eyes.

"Of course he is."

Ivy took one phone.

Messages had arrived in four languages. Each partner wanted proof that Damon could still control his routes. The problem was that control itself had become evidence against him. His credentials appeared on compromised transfers. His translators had altered contracts. His meeting location had leaked.

"You can't make these calls," Ivy said.

Damon opened his eyes.

"Excuse me?"

"You are injured, possibly compromised, and every rival is waiting to hear whether you sound weak. If you threaten them, they leave. If you promise them safety, they won't believe you."

"And your plan?"

"I call them."

Rocco laughed once.

Damon did not.

"They negotiated with me," Ivy continued. "They know I caught the translation fraud. They know I was in the room when you were shot. I don't need to pretend you control everything. I can tell them exactly what we know and what we don't."

"Honesty as strategy."

"Try not to sound so offended."

He studied her for several seconds.

Then he handed over his secure phone.

"Do it."

Ivy began with Catalina.

She did not promise safe corridors. She promised shared verification. Every route would be distributed in language-coded segments based on Thomas's old system. No single office would receive a full schedule. Any leak would identify its source.

Catalina agreed to forty-eight hours.

Renard demanded money.

Ivy offered transparency instead.

He cursed for seven minutes in French, called Damon a reckless peacock, and eventually accepted.

Montreal wanted proof Damon was alive.

Ivy turned the camera toward the hospital bed.

Damon lifted one hand.

"Unfortunately."

The Montreal representative laughed and stayed in the agreement.

By sunset, none of the partners had walked.

Ivy lowered the phone.

Damon looked at her as though he had never seen her before.

"What?"

"You just held together something that took my father thirty years to build."

"For forty-eight hours."

"Still."

She stood and walked to the window.

Compliments from Damon felt dangerous because she wanted them.

That was becoming a problem.

He noticed the distance.

"Ivy."

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Say something that makes this more complicated."

His voice lowered.

"It was complicated when you stepped between Faucher and a knife."

She turned.

"You stepped between me and a bullet."

"That's different."

"Why?"

He had no immediate answer.

Ivy walked closer to the bed.

"You keep treating your protection like a debt nobody else gets to question. You decide who is worth risking yourself for. You decide what everyone knows. You decide when information is too dangerous for them."

His face tightened.

"You sound like Thomas's tape."

"Maybe he was right."

"About staying away from me?"

The question landed harder than she expected.

"About letting people choose."

Damon looked toward his bandaged shoulder.

"Would you have chosen to stand at that window if you knew there was a sniper?"

"Maybe."

"That's insane."

"Exactly. Choice is inconvenient."

For a long moment neither spoke.

Then Damon reached out his uninjured hand.

He stopped before touching her.

"May I?"

The question was so simple that it hurt.

Ivy placed her hand in his.

His fingers closed around hers.

"I don't know what this is," he said.

"Neither do I."

"I know I don't want you disappearing back into a gray uniform when this ends."

Ivy's throat tightened.

"That's not entirely your decision."

"I know."

He said it without argument.

She leaned forward before caution could reorganize her thoughts and kissed him.

It was not dramatic. No alarms sounded. No one dropped a weapon outside the door.

It was brief, careful, and startlingly gentle.

When she pulled back, Damon looked almost offended by the existence of gravity.

"You are heavily medicated," she said.

"Not that heavily."

"Good. I would hate to have to apologize."

Rocco opened the door, saw them, and immediately closed it again.

Ivy laughed despite herself.

The sound disappeared when Damon's secure phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Preston Wade in his hospital bed.

His eyes were open.

Beneath it were six words.

HE REMEMBERED WHO GAVE THE ORDERS.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

GET TO HIM BEFORE WE DO.
