Chapter 18 - Pier Nineteen Became the Trap Thomas Designed Years Ago

The Saint Orison looked too small to carry twelve years of consequences.
Its white paint had yellowed. Museum plaques lined the gangway. A brass bell hung near the wheelhouse beneath a sign asking visitors not to touch.
At eleven thirty at night, Pier Nineteen was closed to the public.
Ivy boarded anyway.
Damon walked beside her. Rocco remained out of sight with a federal tactical team two blocks away, despite Pike's demand. The prosecutor had agreed to a controlled operation because Preston's recordings and Voss's captured call established probable cause.
Ivy wore a transmitter beneath her collar.
Damon hated it.
He did not tell her not to wear it.
Progress came in strange forms.
They found Thomas's hiding place in the old manifest cabinet behind the captain's desk. The drawers were filled with reproduction documents for tourists, but one wooden rail had been cut and resealed.
Inside lay a waterproof packet.
The original consortium agreement bore four signatures.
Sebastian Pike.
Gideon Cole.
Adrian Voss.
Thomas Marlowe.
Ivy stared at her father's name.
"Why would he sign it?"
Damon read the date.
"Before he turned on them."
A handwritten note ran beneath Thomas's signature.
AUTHENTICATION DESIGN ONLY. NO AUTHORITY FOR MARKET ACTION.
Pike's signature appeared again beside an amendment added later.
The amendment authorized coordinated insurance withdrawals following "controlled disruption events."
There it was.
A legal-looking phrase for manufactured disaster.
Footsteps sounded on the deck.
Sebastian Pike entered the wheelhouse alone.
He was seventy-three, broad-shouldered, with the calm expression of a banker accustomed to explaining why other people's losses were inevitable.
"Thomas always did overestimate paper," he said.
Ivy held the packet against her side.
"You came for it."
"I came for closure."
"Men like you use that word when you mean destruction."
Pike smiled.
"You do sound like him."
Damon stepped forward.
"Tell her what happened."
Pike looked at him almost fondly.
"Vincent's son. Still confusing force with authority."
"Tell her."
Pike sighed.
Thomas had gone to Gideon with the agreement and demanded he break from Meridian. Gideon panicked and called Voss. Voss arranged a car to take Thomas to a private airfield, supposedly to negotiate with Pike.
Thomas realized halfway there that the driver had changed route.
He escaped.
"Alive?" Ivy asked.
"For several hours."
The world narrowed around those words.
Pike continued with the detached cruelty of a man describing market weather.
Thomas reached an old freight office and called Evelyn. Before she could send help, Voss found him.
"Adrian shot him," Pike said. "Not because I ordered it. Because Thomas had seen the copied keys and knew Adrian was the leak."
"Where is he buried?"
For the first time, Pike hesitated.
"He wasn't buried. Voss put the body in a vehicle scheduled for scrap at a private yard outside Gary. I learned after."
Ivy's knees weakened.
Damon moved closer but did not touch her until she reached for his hand.
She did.
The transmitter under her collar carried every word.
Pike's gaze dropped briefly toward it.
Then he smiled.
"Did you really think I would come without checking for a wire?"
The wheelhouse lights went out.
Damon pulled Ivy down.
Gunfire shattered the side windows.
Pike moved through a rear door as two armed men came up the deck.
Damon returned fire with a weapon he had hidden beneath his coat.
Ivy crawled behind the captain's console, still clutching the agreement.
One attacker entered from the port side.
She grabbed the brass emergency lever beside the wall and pulled.
The ship's restored foghorn erupted.
The sound was enormous inside the enclosed wheelhouse.
The gunman flinched, hands flying toward his ears.
Damon disarmed him.
Outside, tactical teams surged onto the pier.
Pike ran toward the gangway.
A black sedan appeared at the end of the dock.
Gideon stepped out.
For one impossible second, Ivy thought he had come to rescue Pike.
Instead Gideon raised both hands and shouted toward the federal agents.
"He's armed! Pike is armed!"
Pike stopped.
Betrayal crossed his face.
Gideon looked older than Ivy had ever seen him.
"You used my family for thirty years," he called. "I'm done paying interest."
Pike reached inside his coat.
Agents shouted.
He froze, then slowly removed his hand empty.
They took him to the ground.
Voss was arrested twenty minutes later at a private airstrip after Rocco used Pike's phone to send him a false escape instruction.
The old language trick had worked one last time.
By two in the morning, Ivy sat on the edge of the pier wrapped in a blanket.
The agreement was sealed inside an evidence bag.
Damon sat beside her.
"You have your answer."
"Part of it."
"I know."
She looked across the black water.
Thomas had died afraid, but not confused. He had known what he was trying to stop. He had left evidence where his daughter, of all people, could eventually understand how to read the route.
May you like
Ivy leaned her head against Damon's shoulder.
For once, neither of them translated the silence.
