Chapter 5 - Preston Wade Was Afraid of the Wrong Man

The wounded attacker died before the ambulance reached the terminal.
Damon did not say whether that was convenient or catastrophic. His face became unreadable the moment the paramedics covered the man with a sheet.
Ivy understood the answer anyway.
Dead men ended conversations.
Back at the estate, Rocco sealed the security room and pulled every file linked to Adrian Voss. Damon ordered a full financial audit without telling Voss why. Ivy sat at the long conference table wearing a borrowed sweater because her coat still smelled like smoke.
The surviving strip of manifest lay inside a plastic evidence sleeve between them.
THOMAS MARLOWE — CUSTODIAN B.
ADRIAN VOSS — CUSTODIAN C.
Damon tapped the word custodian.
"My father used that term for people who held pieces of sensitive records. Nobody was supposed to know the entire system."
"Your father trusted mine?"
"Apparently."
"Or used him."
Damon looked at her.
"Both can be true."
Ivy hated that answer because it sounded like something Thomas would have said.
Rocco entered with a burner phone in a plastic bag.
"Found in a bus station locker under Preston's name."
"Where is he?" Damon asked.
"Still missing."
The phone contained no contacts and only seven messages. Six were deleted beyond easy recovery. The seventh had been saved as a draft.
Ivy read it aloud.
"I did what you asked. I changed the Marseille language, the Ruiz language, and the insurance clauses. You said nobody would get hurt. I want out."
No recipient.
No name.
Below it sat a photograph of a bank transfer to a shell company called Orpheus Advisory.
Rocco opened the corporate registry.
"Orpheus is owned through three layers of holding companies. Final administrator is Voss Fiduciary Services."
Damon's voice was flat. "Adrian's firm."
The room became very quiet.
Ivy wanted the answer to feel clean.
It did not.
Voss had always been controlled, careful, almost paternal in the way he spoke to junior staff. Men like Preston performed guilt badly. Men like Adrian performed innocence professionally.
"Bring him in," Damon said.
Rocco shook his head. "He's at the courthouse. Public probate hearing. Cameras everywhere."
"Then wait."
"He'll know something changed."
"Good. I want to see what he does when he knows."
Ivy looked at Damon. "You're using the house as bait."
"I'm using myself as bait."
"Everyone around you is attached to the hook."
His eyes met hers.
"Including you."
"Especially me."
Before the argument could continue, the estate intercom chimed.
A guard's voice came through.
"Mr. Cole, Preston Wade is at the north gate. Alone."
Rocco swore.
Damon stood.
"Bring him to the library. Search him first."
Preston entered ten minutes later looking nothing like the polished translator Ivy remembered. His shirt was wrinkled, his lower lip split, and one lens of his glasses was cracked.
He looked at Damon, then Rocco, then Ivy.
"You shouldn't have brought her in."
Ivy folded her arms. "You circled my name in red."
"I didn't."
"My file was on your desk."
"Because I was trying to figure out why he cared about you."
"Who?"
Preston's eyes moved to the ceiling camera.
Damon reached behind a bookshelf and switched off the room recording system.
"Now talk."
Preston swallowed.
"Three years ago, I was told to flag any employee named Marlowe. I thought it was ridiculous. Then she was hired."
Ivy felt her stomach drop.
"Who told you?"
Preston shook his head.
"I never got a name. Instructions came through Orpheus. At first it was harmless. Copy her schedule. Report if she asked questions. Then they started paying me to adjust translations. Small things. I told myself it was negotiation leverage."
"Four convoys were hit," Damon said.
Preston's voice cracked. "I didn't know routes were being sold."
"The Marseille crew nearly started a war."
"I know. That's why I ran."
Ivy leaned forward. "What does Blue Lantern mean?"
Preston stared at her.
"I don't know. But every time that phrase appeared, I was ordered not to translate it. Leave it exactly as written."
"By Orpheus?"
"Yes."
"And Voss controls Orpheus," Rocco said.
Preston's face changed.
Not surprise.
Terror.
"You said his name?"
Damon studied him. "Why does that scare you?"
Preston stood so quickly the chair tipped backward.
"Because I never said it. Not once. I came here because I thought if I told you enough, you'd protect me without making me name him."
A sharp crack came from the window.
Damon moved first.
He hit Ivy at the waist and drove her behind the stone fireplace.
The second shot shattered the glass.
Preston jerked backward.
A dark stain opened across his shirt.
Rocco drew his weapon and shouted into his radio as guards flooded the hallway.
Ivy crawled toward Preston despite Damon grabbing for her sleeve.
"Stay down!"
"He's alive."
Barely.
Preston's mouth moved.
Ivy bent closer.
His breath smelled of blood.
"Not... Voss," he whispered.
"What?"
His eyes found hers.
"Voss is... door. Not room."
Then he pressed something into her palm.
A brass key.
Stamped into its head was a tiny blue lantern.
Preston's fingers went slack.
Outside, sirens rose across the estate grounds.
Ivy closed her hand around the key.
May you like
Adrian Voss might be guilty.
But Preston had just used his last breath to warn them that guilt had another floor beneath it.
