Chapter 5 - The Bell in the Background

The video changed the case.

Until that moment, Roland Armand had been a fugitive tied to old fraud, suspicious deaths, and the disappearance of Amelia Hart.

Now he was an active kidnapper.

Mara Chen moved quickly.

She had the video metadata analyzed before Julian finished watching it a second time.

"The file was uploaded through public Wi-Fi near Saint Matthew's," she said. "That does not mean it was recorded there."

"Can you trace the device?"

"Already trying."

Lily stood near the farmhouse window with her arms crossed.

"Mom told me not to come."

Julian looked at her.

"Then you won't."

"I didn't say I wouldn't."

"You are nine."

"I know."

"That was not a challenge."

She turned to him.

"She is my mother."

"And she gave you an instruction."

"She gives instructions because she's scared."

"She gives them because she wants you alive."

Lily's eyes narrowed.

"You sound like her."

Julian almost smiled.

"That may be the first compliment you've given me."

"It wasn't."

Mara interrupted.

"Both of you stop."

Julian looked at her.

Mara pointed at Lily.

"You are staying protected."

Then at Julian.

"You are not joining a tactical operation."

Julian folded his arms.

"Was that aimed at me because of the child comparison?"

"Yes."

Daniel entered the room with a folder.

"I found the probate file."

Julian turned.

"Amelia's estate?"

"Her parents' estate. After Amelia was declared dead, the assets were distributed under a contingency provision."

"To whom?"

Daniel laid out copies.

"Part to a charitable trust. Part to Vivian Hart's surviving branch. The newspaper assets were sold to Blackwater."

"Roland."

"Indirectly."

Lily looked at the pages.

"Did he get rich because Mom disappeared?"

Daniel nodded carefully.

"Yes."

Julian's anger settled into something colder.

"So this began with money."

"No," Daniel said. "Money explains the mechanics. It may not explain everything."

"What do you mean?"

"The trust had one unusual asset Samuel Hart never sold."

He pointed to a line.

"A controlling block of shares in North River Utilities."

Julian frowned.

"That company was absorbed into Vale Meridian twelve years ago."

"Exactly."

Julian read the document.

The shares had been held in trust for Amelia until age thirty.

If she died without issue, they reverted to a foundation controlled by Roland.

If she had a child, however, the shares passed to that child.

Julian looked at Lily.

"How much are they worth now?"

Daniel said, "At current valuation? More than two billion dollars."

Lily blinked.

"I don't want it."

"This is not about wanting it," Julian said.

Daniel nodded.

"If Amelia proves she survived, the old transfers can be challenged. If Lily proves descent, Roland's foundation could lose control of assets it has used as collateral for years."

Mara looked at the video again.

"So Roland did not just want Amelia silent. He needed Lily legally nonexistent too."

Lily's face tightened.

Julian moved closer.

"He will not touch you."

"You don't know that."

"No."

He crouched.

"But I know he will have to get through me."

She held his gaze.

Then quietly, "And Mom."

"And your mother."

Mara's analyst called.

The video contained a faint industrial hum at 60 hertz and a periodic metallic impact every twenty-two seconds.

Marcus listened.

"Rail yard?"

"Maybe," Mara said.

There was also a bell in the background.

Not a church bell.

A warning bell.

Daniel suggested a factory.

Julian replayed it.

Amelia's face remained calm except at three points.

Each time the bell sounded, her eyes moved slightly to the left.

"She is telling us something."

Mara looked at him.

"How?"

"She knows we will analyze the background. She wants us to notice the bell."

Lily came closer.

"Mom taps when she can't talk."

Julian remembered the opening note.

"Does she have a code?"

"Three means danger. Two means no. Four means east."

They replayed the video frame by frame.

At one moment, Amelia's fingers were visible near her side.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Three.

Four.

Danger east.

Mara opened a regional map.

"East of what?"

Lily whispered, "Saint Matthew's."

Marcus searched industrial facilities east of the bus station.

There were dozens.

Then Julian heard the bell again.

He knew it.

Not from memory.

From business.

"Container crane warning."

Marcus looked at him.

Julian stood.

"Port facilities use that pattern before gantry movement."

Mara shifted to transportation maps.

East of Saint Matthew's, along the Hudson freight corridor, stood a privately operated transfer yard.

Owner: Armand Logistics Holdings.

Daniel stared.

"That is almost too obvious."

"Roland may assume we think so too," Marcus said.

Mara called for surveillance.

No raid.

Not yet.

Two hours later, agents confirmed heat signatures inside an administrative warehouse that had supposedly been closed for renovation.

One van arrived.

A man matching Roland's driver entered.

Mara's voice hardened.

"We have enough."

Julian said, "I'm coming."

"No."

"That facility sits on former Vale property. I know the underground service tunnel."

Mara looked at him.

"What tunnel?"

"There is an old storm access under the east loading platform. It was sealed on paper, but the survey maps show a maintenance corridor."

"Why was that not in the public plans?"

"Because my company inherited it in a merger."

Mara stared at him.

"Show me."

They spread plans across the farmhouse table.

The tunnel ran from a drainage culvert to a utility basement beneath the warehouse.

"If Roland has people watching the roads," Julian said, "your team can enter from the river side."

Mara studied the map.

Then pointed at him.

"You provide the map. You do not enter."

Julian said nothing.

"Say it."

"I provide the map."

"Second sentence."

"I do not enter."

"Good."

Lily whispered, "You sound like a teacher."

Mara looked at her.

"I am surrounded by difficult students."

At dusk, tactical teams moved.

Julian waited in a command vehicle three blocks away.

Lily remained at a secure federal facility with Daniel.

He hated that she was not beside him.

He hated more that he was relieved.

Marcus sat near him with headphones.

"Team Alpha entering tunnel."

Julian watched a live schematic.

Seconds stretched.

"Basement clear."

Then gunfire cracked over the audio.

Julian stood.

Mara's voice came through.

"Shots fired. Suspect moving north."

"Amelia?" Julian asked.

No answer.

More shouting.

Then:

"Female victim located."

Julian stopped breathing.

"Condition?"

A medic's voice.

"Conscious. Head injury. Dehydration. No gunshot wounds."

Julian closed his eyes.

Alive.

"Is it Amelia?"

Mara answered this time.

"Yes."

He gripped the edge of the table.

"Roland?"

"Not here."

The relief vanished.

"He escaped?"

"He may never have been here."

Julian opened his eyes.

Then why leave Amelia?

The answer arrived before anyone said it.

Distraction.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

Julian answered.

"Lily?"

Daniel's voice was breathless.

"She's safe. But someone breached the building."

Julian went cold.

"What?"

"Fire alarm. Two men posing as marshals tried to access the protected floor."

"Where are they?"

"One in custody. One escaped."

"How did they know where she was?"

Daniel did not answer.

He did not need to.

There was a leak.

Julian looked at Marcus.

"Someone inside the operation is feeding Roland."

Marcus's face changed.

Mara came over the radio.

"Julian, Amelia is asking for you."

Twenty minutes later, he entered the medical staging area.

Amelia sat on a cot with a bandage at her temple.

Seventeen years had changed her.

They had not changed the way Julian knew her.

She looked up.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Amelia said, "You got old."

Julian laughed once, and the sound broke halfway through.

"So did you."

She stood.

He crossed the distance.

The embrace was not romantic.

Not at first.

It was grief taking physical form.

She pressed her face into his shoulder.

"I tried."

"I know."

"I tried to come back."

"I know."

"Lily?"

"Safe."

Amelia pulled away.

"Where?"

"Federal protection."

Fear flashed across her face.

"No."

"What?"

"No federal facility. No local police. No one connected to the original case."

"Amelia—"

She grabbed his sleeve.

"Roland has someone inside."

"We know."

"No. You don't understand."

Her voice dropped.

"The leak is not some clerk."

Julian stared.

"Who?"

Amelia looked toward the agents around them.

May you like

Then whispered a name.

"Mara Chen."
