Chapter 7 - Control Is Power

For one second, Julian forgot every rule he had ever learned about negotiation.

He wanted to run toward the sound.

Amelia caught his sleeve.

"No."

Her face was white, but her voice was steady.

"If he has Lily, he wants you irrational."

Julian looked at her.

"I am already irrational."

"Then pretend."

Mara signaled to Marcus.

He moved toward an electrical panel.

Roland's voice came through the speakers again.

"The Hart ledger. Original materials. All copies."

Julian shouted toward the ceiling.

"You don't have her."

A pause.

Then Lily's voice.

"Mom?"

Amelia closed her eyes.

It was real enough to hurt.

Roland spoke.

"She is frightened."

Lily immediately yelled, "I'm not!"

Julian almost laughed despite everything.

Amelia whispered, "That's her."

Mara motioned for silence.

She pointed to a portable spectrum monitor.

The speaker signal was not coming from inside the building.

It was being routed remotely.

A recording could be live from anywhere.

Julian called out.

"What proof do I have she is alive?"

Roland replied, "Ask her something."

Julian thought.

"Lily. What did you say when I told you I wanted you before I knew you existed?"

Silence.

Then Lily answered.

"That it was a weird answer."

Julian's jaw tightened.

Live.

Mara wrote on a notepad.

KEEP HIM TALKING.

Julian said, "You want the ledger? Come get it."

Roland laughed.

"You inherited your father's arrogance."

"And you inherited nothing. You stole it."

A sharper silence.

Good.

Anger made people careless.

"You think a box of old paper matters?" Roland asked.

"I think you have spent seventeen years killing people because it matters."

"I survived because I understood something your father never did."

"What?"

"Truth is not power. Control is power."

Amelia looked at Julian.

He saw something in her expression.

Keep him talking.

Julian stepped into the red emergency light.

"Then why are you hiding?"

Roland's answer came colder.

"I am not hiding."

Mara's technician whispered, "Signal triangulation in progress."

Julian continued.

"You ran from your own house."

"I moved."

"You burned records."

"I cleaned."

"You kidnapped a woman and a child."

"I corrected unfinished business."

Amelia flinched.

Julian's voice dropped.

"Say that again."

Mara shook her head.

Do not lose control.

Roland said, "Amelia should have died with Rachel Wynn. Evelyn made a mistake."

There it was.

An admission.

Mara's technician was recording every word.

Julian forced himself not to react.

"And my father?"

Roland laughed softly.

"Richard was sentimental."

"Did you kill him?"

"I did not touch him."

"Victor Bell did?"

Silence.

Julian looked at Mara.

She wrote: PUSH.

"Bell signed the death certificate," Julian said. "He falsified Amelia's identification too. That makes him useful. Useful men become dangerous witnesses."

Roland's voice sharpened.

"Victor was paid."

"Was?"

Another silence.

Julian understood.

Bell was dead.

Roland realized he had revealed too much.

"Enough," he said.

A phone number appeared on Marcus's screen.

Roland continued.

"You will receive coordinates. Bring the original ledger and the girl gets returned."

"How do I know you will keep your word?"

"You don't."

Amelia stepped forward.

"I'll bring it."

Julian turned.

Roland went silent.

Amelia spoke toward the ceiling.

"You want me, not Julian."

"Amelia."

Roland sounded almost affectionate.

She shuddered.

"You have spent seventeen years trying to erase me. Come finish it."

"Do you think motherhood made you brave?"

"No. You taught me what cowardice looks like."

Julian watched her.

She was trembling.

Still she continued.

"Let Lily go. I bring the ledger."

Roland laughed.

"The ledger was never yours."

"My father made it."

"And your father was a fool."

"So why are you afraid of his paper?"

The speakers cut off.

Marcus checked the signal.

"Gone."

The technician said, "We got a probable origin zone. Northern New Jersey. About seven miles wide."

Mara looked at Amelia.

"That was reckless."

Amelia stared back.

"Did it work?"

"Yes."

"Then you're welcome."

Julian rubbed a hand over his face.

"Please do not teach Lily that."

"Too late."

Mara's phone buzzed.

The coordinates arrived.

An abandoned water-treatment plant near the Passaic River.

Daniel looked at the map.

"Trap."

"Obviously," Mara said.

Julian looked at the requested time.

Midnight.

Four hours.

"Where was Lily taken from?"

Mara's face darkened.

"Protective site camera shows the breach team never reached her floor."

"Then how did Roland get her?"

"Someone escorted her out before the alarm."

"Who?"

Mara showed him a still image.

Marcus.

Everyone looked at the security chief.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"That's not me."

Julian studied it.

Same height.

Same coat.

Same close-cropped hair.

But the man turned slightly toward the camera.

There was a scar across his right eyebrow.

Marcus had none.

Daniel said, "Kessler?"

Mara enlarged the image.

Thomas Kessler had changed with age, but the build matched.

He had impersonated Marcus from a distance using a copied credential and matching clothes.

Lily would have recognized him up close.

Unless she never saw his face.

Another camera showed the man approaching from behind while Lily spoke to a female marshal.

Then the feed died.

Mara's jaw tightened.

"Internal access gave him ninety seconds."

Julian asked, "Which marshal?"

Mara pulled the roster.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Andrea Pike."

"Where is she?"

"Missing."

Amelia whispered, "Not missing. Chosen."

Mara ordered a search.

Twenty minutes later, agents found Pike's car abandoned.

Inside was a burner phone.

One outgoing text:

PACKAGE SECURED.

Julian stared at the words.

"Package."

Amelia's voice went flat.

"That is what people like Roland call children when they want to forget they are human."

Julian looked at her.

"We get her back."

Amelia nodded.

"Yes."

Not hope.

Decision.

They built the rescue plan around the water-treatment plant.

Julian hated every part of it.

The ledger would be replaced with convincing replicas.

A tracking transmitter would be hidden in the case.

Amelia would wear a wire.

Julian would accompany her only to the perimeter, then stop.

He argued.

Mara threatened arrest.

Amelia sided with Mara.

That ended it.

At eleven forty, rain began again.

The abandoned plant rose beside the river like a concrete skeleton.

Amelia sat in the passenger seat of an unmarked SUV.

Julian drove.

"You don't have to do this," he said.

"Yes, I do."

"No. We can wait."

"For what? Roland to move Lily?"

"He may kill you."

"He may kill her if I don't go."

Julian gripped the wheel.

"I just got you back."

Amelia looked out at the rain.

"You never had me."

"That's not what I meant."

"I know."

She turned.

"I am sorry."

"For what?"

"For every year you thought I left."

"You were surviving."

"I was also afraid."

"Those can both be true."

She studied him.

"You changed."

"So did you."

"Do you still hate elevators?"

She laughed quietly.

"Yes."

"Good."

"Why is that good?"

"One thing I still know."

Her eyes filled.

Then the radio clicked.

Mara's voice.

"Two minutes."

Amelia reached for the door.

Julian caught her hand.

She looked down.

He said, "Bring our daughter home."

Amelia squeezed once.

"I plan to."

She stepped into the rain carrying the false ledger.

Julian watched her walk toward the plant.

Through his earpiece, he heard the metal door open.

Roland's voice came faintly through Amelia's wire.

"Moonbird."

Julian went cold.

Roland knew the private name.

Amelia stopped.

"Where is Lily?"

Roland laughed.

"You still don't understand."

A second voice spoke.

Female.

Familiar.

Celeste Armand.

"She isn't here."

Julian stared through the windshield.

Celeste had disappeared hours earlier.

Amelia's voice sharpened.

"Where is my daughter?"

Celeste answered.

"With the only person Roland trusts."

May you like

Julian whispered, "Kessler."

Then gunfire exploded inside the plant.
