Chapter 8 - Blackwater House

The first shot destroyed Amelia's wire.
Static screamed in Julian's earpiece.
He was out of the SUV before Mara finished shouting his name.
"Julian, stop!"
He ran toward the plant.
Marcus tackled him behind a concrete barrier as two more shots cracked inside.
"Get off me."
"No."
"Amelia is in there."
"So are twelve agents."
"I don't care."
Marcus shoved him against the barrier.
"You care about Lily. If you get killed here, you help nobody."
Julian stared at him.
He hated Marcus for being right.
Mara crouched beside them.
"Team One breached west entrance. Team Two moving upstairs."
"Amelia?"
"No visual."
"Celeste?"
"Unknown."
Julian looked at the building.
"Roland?"
"Unknown."
Everything was unknown.
That was the worst kind of fear.
Inside the plant, Amelia had dropped behind a rusted filtration tank when the first shot struck the wall.
Celeste crouched opposite her.
Roland stood on a metal walkway above them.
The false ledger case lay open on the floor.
He had recognized the copies immediately.
"Did you really think I would not know my own history?" he called.
Amelia shouted, "It's not yours."
Roland fired toward the tank.
Concrete dust burst beside her.
Celeste flinched.
"Father, stop."
Roland looked down.
"You brought her."
"I brought the case."
"You brought federal agents."
"I didn't know."
"You always were weak."
Celeste's face changed.
Amelia watched.
For years, Celeste had feared Roland.
Fear was still there.
But something else had finally become larger.
"No," Celeste said. "I was obedient."
Roland aimed at her.
"Same thing."
Celeste moved before he fired.
The bullet struck the railing.
Amelia grabbed Celeste's arm and pulled her behind the tank.
Celeste stared.
"You saved me."
"Do not make me regret it."
Footsteps thundered through the lower corridor.
Roland retreated along the walkway.
Celeste whispered, "There is a service exit on the north side."
"How do you know?"
"I came here as a child."
Amelia looked at her.
"What?"
"My father used this place for meetings."
That explained why Celeste had known the location before anyone said it.
"Where is Lily?"
Celeste's eyes filled.
"Kessler has her at Blackwater House."
Amelia froze.
"What is Blackwater House?"
"A property in Connecticut. My father never put it in his name."
"Address."
"I don't know the number. Near Lake Waramaug."
Amelia grabbed her shoulders.
"Think."
"White stone house. Private road. Old boathouse. There was a metal horse over the gate."
Mara's team reached them.
"Hands visible!"
Celeste raised hers.
Amelia shouted, "Roland is north walkway. Kessler has Lily in Connecticut."
Mara entered seconds later.
"Julian is outside."
"Of course he is."
Mara almost smiled.
Then a burst of gunfire came from the north exit.
Agents pursued.
Roland escaped again.
But Celeste did not.
For the first time in her life, she chose not to follow him.
Outside, Julian reached Amelia before the medics did.
"Are you hit?"
"No."
He checked her anyway.
"Julian."
"What?"
"I'm fine."
He stopped.
"Where is Lily?"
"Connecticut."
Celeste emerged in handcuffs.
Julian's expression became lethal.
Amelia stepped between them.
"She gave us the location."
Julian looked at Celeste.
"After helping Roland."
Celeste did not defend herself.
"I thought he would trade Lily."
"You thought wrong."
"I know."
Mara approached.
"We found blood at the north exit. Roland may be wounded."
"Good," Julian said.
Mara ignored him.
"Celeste says Blackwater House is near Lake Waramaug. We are checking property records."
Celeste shook her head.
"You won't find it under Blackwater."
"Then what?"
"My mother's maiden name. Voss."
Marcus searched.
Within minutes, he found a trust called Voss Heritage Holdings.
It owned one property near the lake.
317 Hawthorne Ridge Road.
Julian looked at the number.
"317 again."
Amelia did too.
"Roland likes symbols."
Celeste shook her head.
"No. Samuel Hart used 317 as an index number in the ledger. My father mocked him by using it for safe properties."
Amelia stared.
"You knew that?"
"I learned things by listening."
"Then why did you stay?"
Celeste looked toward the dark plant.
"Because leaving him meant admitting what I had become."
Julian said coldly, "You can admit it in court."
She nodded.
"I intend to."
Mara moved fast.
Helicopters were too loud.
Road teams would take ninety minutes.
Julian offered Vale Meridian's emergency aviation unit.
Mara refused his pilots and accepted the aircraft.
Thirty-five minutes later, a federal tactical team lifted from Newark.
Julian and Amelia remained behind.
Again.
This time neither argued.
They sat in a conference room at a state police barracks watching live updates.
Celeste, under guard in another room, gave a full proffer.
She described Roland's shell companies.
Kessler's role.
Victor Bell's falsified records.
The years of surveillance.
The plan to force Amelia to surrender the ledger.
She also revealed something nobody expected.
Roland had not ordered Lily killed.
He wanted her signature.
Julian frowned.
"She's nine."
Daniel explained.
"Not legally sufficient."
"Then why?"
Celeste answered through a speaker.
"Because he has a judge."
Mara stared.
"What judge?"
"Malcolm Saye."
Daniel went pale.
"He handles emergency guardianships in Connecticut."
Celeste continued.
"Roland planned to produce Lily under a false identity, declare Amelia dead again, and place Lily under a court-appointed guardian controlled by Blackwater."
Julian stood.
"A fake legal process."
"With real paperwork," Daniel said. "That is how schemes like this survive. They wrap crimes in documents."
Amelia stared at the table.
"He was going to erase her the way he erased me."
Julian put his hand beside hers.
Not on it.
Beside.
She moved her hand onto his.
The gesture was small.
It meant more than any speech.
At one forty-seven in the morning, the tactical team reached Hawthorne Ridge Road.
The gate bore a rusted metal horse.
Celeste had remembered correctly.
Thermal imaging showed three people inside the main house.
One adult male.
One adult female.
One child.
"Kessler, Pike, Lily," Mara said.
No Roland.
The team breached.
Julian heard shouting through the secure feed.
Then a woman's scream.
Then silence.
Mara listened.
"Child located."
Amelia stood.
"Alive?"
Mara raised one finger.
Wait.
The word was unbearable.
Then the radio came.
"Minor secure. Conscious. No visible injuries."
Amelia bent forward as if her body had forgotten how to hold itself.
Julian caught her.
Lily was alive.
Kessler was arrested in the kitchen.
Andrea Pike surrendered after being shot in the shoulder.
Agents found forged guardianship papers prepared for the next morning.
Judge Malcolm Saye's signature was already on two blank orders.
There were bank records.
Passports.
Cash.
And one locked briefcase.
Inside were original medical records from Richard Vale's death.
The toxicology page had been removed.
But a handwritten note remained.
Bell: dose confirmed.
Julian stared at the photograph sent from the scene.
His father.
Amelia's parents.
Rachel Wynn.
Evelyn Shaw.
All roads kept returning to Roland.
Mara's phone rang again.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
She looked at Julian.
"Roland's vehicle was found near the river."
"Body?"
"No."
"Blood?"
"Yes."
Amelia's relief disappeared.
"He is still out there."
Mara nodded.
"But Kessler is talking."
Daniel asked, "Already?"
"He wants immunity."
Julian laughed without humor.
"He is not getting it."
"That is not your decision."
"No. But I can still enjoy the thought."
Mara looked at Amelia.
"Kessler says Roland has one final destination."
"Where?"
Mara hesitated.
"The Bellmont Hotel."
Julian stared.
"The gala?"
"Not the ballroom."
"Then where?"
"According to Kessler, Roland hid his master archive in a private vault beneath the hotel fifteen years ago."
Amelia looked at Julian.
The story had begun there with Lily walking into a room full of strangers.
Now Roland was returning to the same building.
"Why tonight?" Amelia asked.
Mara answered.
"Because he knows the case is collapsing."
Julian understood.
"He is going to destroy the archive."
Mara nodded.
"And if that archive contains what Kessler says it contains, it may be the only complete record of everyone Roland bought."
May you like
Julian stood.
"Then we go back to the Bellmont."
