Chapter 5 - The Vault That Was Never Empty

Helen let the phone ring until it stopped.

Micah stood across from her in the Richmond dining room, the keycard to box 417 clenched in one hand.

"How long?"

Helen wiped her face.

"Three months."

"How long have you been helping Dante?"

"Three months."

Vincent's voice was colder than Micah had ever heard it.

"What did you give him?"

"Copies of old company letters. Public filings. Two photographs. Nothing that could lead him to the ledger."

"He found the storage company."

"Not through me."

"He found the blue room."

"Not through me."

Micah stepped closer.

"Why did you answer him at all?"

Helen looked directly at her.

"Because he knew who you were before I knew you worked for Vincent."

Micah's grip tightened on the keycard.

"You said he didn't know I was Anthony's daughter."

"I said I don't think he knows that. He knows you're Thomas and Elaine Hayes's daughter. He knew Thomas had hidden records. He told me he would drag your parents' names through every newspaper in Britain unless I helped him prove Anthony stole the company."

"So you decided for me."

"Yes."

"Just like everyone else."

Helen flinched.

Naomi folded her arms.

"Does Dante know about box 417?"

"No."

"Does anyone besides us?"

Helen hesitated.

"The bank."

"That isn't what I asked."

"Elaine's solicitor knew. He died two years ago."

"Anyone living?"

"Not that I know."

Naomi took Helen's phone.

"You're going to call Dante back."

Vincent looked at her.

"What are you thinking?"

"We give him somewhere else to look."

Micah shook her head.

"No."

Naomi raised an eyebrow.

"You have a better plan?"

"Yes. Tell him the truth."

Everyone stared at her.

Micah continued.

"Tell him Helen moved the ledger, but she panicked before she could read it. Tell him she believes it is now in a solicitor's archive. Give him a location we control."

Vincent understood first.

"He'll assume she finally broke under pressure."

"And while he is watching the decoy, we go to the bank."

Naomi nodded slowly.

"That is what I was going to propose."

"Then we agree."

Helen looked frightened.

"If he realizes—"

Micah cut her off.

"He will eventually. The point is to make him realize after I have the ledger."

The decoy was a closed legal archive in Bloomsbury owned by one of Naomi's former colleagues. At 7:20 the next morning, Helen called Dante and told him in a trembling voice that she had moved Thomas's records there years ago.

Dante was silent for several seconds.

"Why tell me now?"

Helen looked at Micah.

Micah mouthed, Because I'm scared.

"Because I'm scared," Helen said.

"You were scared yesterday."

"Yesterday I thought I could keep this contained. Then I saw Micah."

"You saw her?"

"At the Richmond house."

Dante's breathing changed.

"Was Vincent there?"

"Yes."

"What did they find?"

"Nothing. The clock was empty."

That part was true.

Dante cursed softly.

"Send me the archive address."

Helen did.

He hung up.

Naomi immediately called her team.

"Our watchers will confirm whether Rossi moves."

At 7:58, two vehicles linked to Dante's security company arrived near Bloomsbury.

Naomi looked at Micah.

"Now."

St. James Mercantile occupied a discreet stone building near Piccadilly. There were no advertisements outside, only brass doors and a plaque with the bank's name.

Micah entered with Vincent and Naomi. Helen remained with security in a second vehicle.

The vault officer inspected the keycard, Micah's identification, Elaine's probate certificate, and the letter of authority from the executor.

Then he frowned.

"There is an additional instruction on this box."

Micah's stomach tightened.

"What instruction?"

"Dual identity confirmation."

"Whose?"

The officer turned the screen slightly away, as privacy policy required.

"One claimant must be Elaine Hayes's firstborn child. The second must be a descendant of Anthony Costanza."

Micah stared at Vincent.

Vincent almost laughed.

"Anthony planned this."

Naomi said, "Or Thomas did."

The officer looked between them.

"Are you both able to provide the required documentation?"

Vincent handed over his passport and a certified copy of Anthony's birth and death records that Naomi had retrieved overnight.

Micah had Elaine's documents.

The officer disappeared.

Ten minutes later he returned with a sealed verification form.

"The identities satisfy the instruction."

They were escorted down two levels to a private viewing room.

Box 417 was longer than Micah expected, nearly a meter deep.

The officer inserted the bank key. Micah inserted the card key.

The locks clicked.

He left them alone.

Micah pulled the box out.

Inside lay a black leather ledger, two sealed envelopes, a compact cassette tape, and a small metal cash box.

Vincent exhaled.

"That's it."

Micah did not touch the ledger immediately.

"Photograph everything first."

Naomi smiled faintly.

"You really have been paying attention."

They photographed the box as found, then opened the ledger.

The first pages listed legitimate transfers from the Marlowe reserve to Hayes & Costanza.

The next pages listed incoming funds from companies linked to Sebastian Rossi.

Beside several entries Thomas had written: UNVERIFIED SOURCE.

Farther in, the handwriting changed.

Anthony Costanza had added notes.

S.R. demanded invoice duplication.

Refused.

Threat against V. school route received Thursday.

T.H. believes I created false debt. Need speak privately.

Vincent stopped on the initial.

"V."

Micah touched the line.

"You."

He nodded.

The next pages contained copies of checks and dates matching the false debt transfers that reduced Thomas's ownership.

One entry was circled in red.

AUTHORIZED UNDER DURESS — A.C.

Below it, in Thomas's writing:

I believe him.

Micah closed her eyes.

"They reconciled."

"At least by then."

They turned another page.

A signed statement had been inserted into the binding.

It came from Martin Keane, Sebastian Rossi's accountant.

I prepared false liabilities against Hayes & Costanza at Sebastian Rossi's instruction. I altered loan schedules and arranged payments to two contractors for intimidation of Thomas Hayes and Anthony Costanza. I was not instructed to kill either man.

Micah read the final sentence twice.

"Not instructed to kill either man."

Naomi said, "That distinction matters."

"It means someone was paid to frighten them."

"And things may have escalated."

Vincent looked at the cassette.

"We need a player."

The bank had none. Naomi photographed the tape label.

T.H. / A.C. / 14 SEPT 2004.

Thomas died on September 17, 2004.

Three days later.

Micah's face went white.

"That may be the last recording of my father."

Vincent reached toward her, then stopped before touching her.

"We can wait."

"No."

"Micah."

"No more waiting."

She opened the first envelope.

It was addressed to Anthony.

Inside was a one-page letter from Thomas.

Anthony,

If Sebastian makes good on the threat against Vincent, none of this matters. Take Elaine and Micah out of London. I will meet Keane alone and get the original records. You have already lost enough to fear. I will not let fear decide what we become.

T.

Vincent looked away.

Micah folded the letter carefully.

"He was protecting you."

Vincent's voice broke slightly.

"And I spent years thinking he hated my father."

"Maybe he did sometimes."

"He still protected me."

"People can do both."

The second envelope was addressed to Elaine.

Micah opened it.

Elaine,

If I fail, do not let Anthony confess publicly before Micah is safe. Sebastian will use the child to control him. Anthony has agreed that the Hayes ownership will return to you if the ledger survives. This is not charity. The capital was yours before it was ours.

There was a final handwritten line.

Trust the daughter, not the son of the man who started this.

Micah frowned.

"We thought this meant me and Vincent."

Naomi leaned closer.

"It doesn't."

Vincent read it again.

"The son of the man who started this is Dante."

Micah's eyes widened.

"Then whose daughter?"

Naomi looked at the wording.

"Sebastian Rossi had a daughter?"

Vincent shook his head.

"Not publicly. Dante is his only recognized child."

Micah looked at Naomi.

Naomi's expression had changed.

"What?"

"I know that phrase," Naomi said.

"From where?"

"An old organized crime file. Sebastian Rossi had a long-term relationship with a woman named Margaret Price."

Vincent stared at her surname.

Micah did too.

Naomi's face became unreadable.

"Margaret was my mother."

The room went silent.

Vincent whispered, "Naomi..."

She looked at him.

"Sebastian Rossi was my biological father."

Micah stared.

"So you are Dante's half sister."

"Yes."

"And you never told us."

"No."

Vincent's shock became anger.

"You have run my security for nine years."

"Yes."

"You knew Dante was your brother."

"Yes."

"Did he know?"

Naomi's answer came after a pause.

"He found out last year."

Micah felt another layer of the story slide into place.

"And that is when he started looking for the ledger."

Naomi nodded.

"Because he believed it contained proof that Sebastian intended to disinherit him in favor of me."

"Does it?"

"I don't know."

Vincent's voice hardened.

"What else have you hidden?"

Before Naomi could answer, her phone vibrated.

One message.

She read it and went pale.

"The Bloomsbury decoy failed."

Micah stood.

"How?"

"Dante never went inside."

"Then where is he?"

Naomi turned the screen around.

A photograph had arrived from Helen's phone.

Helen was seated in the back of a car.

Dante sat beside her.

May you like

The message underneath read:

Bring box 417 to the Costanza estate by noon, or Helen learns what your fathers were willing to do to keep their daughters alive.
