Chapter 7 - The Mother Who Chose a Ghost

Vincent crossed the marble floor so quickly that Dante's smile disappeared.

"What did you mean?"

Dante held his ground.

"Exactly what I said."

"My mother died in 2014."

"There was a funeral," Dante replied. "That is not always the same thing."

Micah watched Vincent's face change from anger to something more dangerous: hope he did not want.

"Where is she?"

Dante glanced at Naomi.

"Ask your security chief."

Naomi's expression hardened.

"I thought Celia Costanza was dead."

"Then Anthony kept secrets from you too."

Vincent seized Dante by the front of his jacket.

Naomi moved instantly.

"Vincent. Let him go."

"Where is she?"

Dante did not struggle.

"If you hurt me, you'll never know."

Micah stepped beside Vincent.

"Let him go."

Vincent looked at her.

"He is using the only thing he has left."

"My mother."

"A claim about your mother. We verify claims. We don't let them control us."

His hands loosened.

Dante straightened his jacket.

"Thomas taught you that?"

Micah's eyes went cold.

"No. Your father did. By demonstrating what happens when everyone believes the story that frightens them most."

Naomi took Dante's phone from his hand before he could react.

"You can't—"

"You brought a kidnapped woman onto private property and made demands for evidence connected to historic fraud. I can preserve what you carried in. Argue about admissibility with counsel."

Dante looked toward the doors.

Two security officers blocked them.

"Am I a prisoner?"

Naomi answered, "You're free to leave. Your phone stays until police arrive to document Helen's complaint."

Helen's voice shook, but it was clear.

"I am making a complaint."

Dante turned to her.

"I never touched you."

"You told your driver not to unlock the doors. You told me Micah would suffer if I refused. Call it what you like."

Dante looked at Micah.

"You want the truth about Celia? Peter Lyle has it."

"Then we'll speak to Peter Lyle."

"He won't speak to you now."

"Why?"

"Because he thinks you are all as dangerous as your fathers."

Naomi's phone rang.

She checked the screen.

"Unknown number."

She answered on speaker.

"Price."

A rough male voice said, "You wanted Thomas Hayes."

Naomi looked at Micah.

"Mr. Lyle?"

"I shouldn't be doing this."

"Then tell us only what you know."

"I know your brother called me after you did."

Dante's expression tightened.

Peter continued.

"He offered me money to say Anthony Costanza paid for the car job."

Micah stared at Dante.

"Did you accept?"

"No. I'm old, not stupid."

Dante said sharply, "Peter—"

"You're there with him?"

Naomi answered, "Yes."

"Good. He can hear this too. Sebastian Rossi paid me in 2004 to tamper with Thomas Hayes's car. I was told to create a brake warning and a small fluid leak. Enough to scare him. Not enough to kill him."

Micah's voice tightened.

"Did you do it?"

"Yes."

"And he died three days later."

"Not because of my work."

"How can you know?"

"Because Thomas caught me."

Everyone went quiet.

Peter gave a bitter laugh.

"He was waiting in the garage. Had a camera. Had the plate number of the van I used. He could have called police. Instead he asked who hired me."

"You told him?"

"Eventually."

"Sebastian."

"Yes. Thomas made me inspect every line I'd touched while he watched. Then he had another mechanic replace the parts. His car was safe when I left."

Vincent said, "Then what happened on September seventeenth?"

Peter was silent.

"Mr. Lyle?"

"Thomas called me that morning. Said he needed me to sign a statement in front of a solicitor. I agreed because Sebastian had started threatening my family too."

Micah gripped the edge of the console.

"Did Thomas arrive?"

"No."

"Why?"

"A car followed him from London. I know because I was on the phone with him. He said a black Jaguar had stayed behind him for ten miles. Then I heard him swear. I heard metal. The line went dead."

Naomi asked, "Did you tell police?"

"Anonymous call. I was terrified."

"Did you identify the Jaguar?"

"Not then. Years later I saw it again in a photograph from a Rossi family event. It belonged to Sebastian's driver, Malcolm Vane."

Dante shook his head.

"Vane died in 2006. Convenient."

Peter's voice hardened.

"Your father paid his widow for fifteen years. I have copies of two transfers because Anthony Costanza hired me later to trace them."

Vincent stared.

"My father found you?"

"In 2007. He apologized for not believing Thomas sooner."

Micah closed her eyes briefly.

"Did Anthony know Sebastian ordered Thomas killed?"

"I never saw proof Sebastian ordered a killing. Only that Vane followed Thomas and the crash happened. Anthony believed Vane escalated on his own after Thomas obtained evidence."

Naomi said, "Can you send the transfer copies and give a formal statement?"

"Yes. But only through a solicitor."

"Agreed."

Micah asked one final question.

"What does any of this have to do with Celia Costanza?"

Peter went quiet again.

"She came to see me after Anthony did."

Vincent's face tightened.

"When?"

"2013."

A year before her supposed death.

"What did she want?"

"The copies. She offered me money to destroy them."

Vincent looked physically sick.

"Why?"

"She said the truth would destroy her son."

Dante watched him carefully.

Peter continued.

"I refused. She cried. Said Anthony had changed the trust because of guilt and that some woman named Micah would one day take everything from Vincent. I didn't know who Micah was."

Micah felt the room turn toward her.

Vincent whispered, "She knew."

"Apparently," Peter said. "A few months later I saw a death notice for Celia Costanza. I thought it was over."

Naomi asked, "Did you ever see a body?"

Peter laughed once.

"I'm a mechanic, not an undertaker."

The call ended after Naomi arranged a solicitor contact.

Vincent stared at Dante.

"Where is she?"

Dante's smile was gone.

"Switzerland. Most of the time."

"You met her."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Last year."

"How did you find her?"

"Sebastian left a list of accounts after he died. One belonged to a woman named Cecilia Vale. I traced it."

Vincent looked away.

"Cecilia Vale was her maiden middle name."

Micah asked Dante, "What did she want from you?"

"The same thing I wanted from her. The ledger."

"Why?"

"She believed the ledger would transfer Costanza control to you. She wanted it destroyed. I believed it would prove Anthony stole from my father. I wanted it exposed."

Naomi said, "So you cooperated until you realized your goals were opposite."

"Exactly."

Vincent's voice was barely audible.

"She faked her death to preserve my inheritance."

Dante shrugged.

"She would call it protecting you."

"Where is she now?"

"London."

That answer shocked everyone except Dante.

He nodded toward the front doors.

"She arrived three days ago. She's staying at the Savoy under another name. She is the one who told me Helen had moved the ledger."

Helen covered her mouth.

Micah's anger sharpened.

"She used you."

Dante laughed bitterly.

"We used each other. Family tradition."

Naomi's team gave Dante his phone back after police arrived. Helen made her statement. Dante left with counsel after being informed that the allegation would be reviewed.

He paused beside Micah before stepping outside.

"Monday's board vote will not go the way you think."

"Why?"

"Because ownership is not the same as control. Half the board fears scandal more than theft."

"Then they can explain that publicly."

"You think exposure makes you powerful. It makes you a target."

Micah held his gaze.

"I've spent fourteen months being invisible in a house built with my mother's money. I'm done letting other people decide whether being seen is dangerous."

Dante left.

That afternoon, Celia Costanza agreed to meet Vincent alone.

Vincent refused the condition.

"Micah comes."

The meeting took place in a private hotel suite with Naomi waiting in the adjoining room.

Celia entered at 4:05 p.m.

She was sixty-one, elegant, silver-blonde, and alive.

Vincent stood but did not move toward her.

Celia's eyes filled immediately.

"My darling."

"Don't call me that."

She stopped.

Micah remained near the window.

Celia looked at her for a long time.

"You have Anthony's eyes."

Micah's jaw tightened.

"Apparently everyone knew that except me."

"I didn't know where you were for years."

"But you knew I existed."

"Yes."

Vincent asked, "Why did you let me bury you?"

Celia's composure broke.

"Because Anthony told me Sebastian's network was still watching us. Because the trust clause was approaching review. Because I discovered people asking about Micah. I thought if I disappeared, I could protect what Anthony left you without drawing attention."

"You let me grieve you for twelve years."

"I watched you from a distance."

"That makes it worse."

Celia looked down.

"I know."

"No, you don't. You chose my money over my right to know my mother was alive."

"I chose your safety."

"You tried to destroy evidence proving Thomas Hayes was threatened."

"Because the evidence also endangered you."

"It endangered my inheritance."

"In our world, inheritance is safety."

Micah finally spoke.

"That is the lie all of you keep repeating."

Celia turned toward her.

"You don't understand what Sebastian Rossi was."

"I understand what fear made all of you become."

"Your mother understood."

"Do not use Elaine to defend yourself."

Celia flinched.

Micah stepped closer.

"Elaine lived modestly while knowing millions had been stolen from her family. She protected me without faking her death. Thomas protected Vincent even after Anthony betrayed him. Anthony tried to return what he had taken. They were flawed, frightened people, but at least some of them eventually moved toward truth. You moved away from it for twelve years."

Celia looked at Vincent.

"If Micah presents that ledger Monday, you lose control."

Vincent answered, "Then I lose control."

"You say that now because you don't understand what it means."

"I understand what it meant to think my mother was dead."

Celia's face crumpled.

Vincent continued.

"I would have traded every share for one truthful phone call."

She had no answer.

Micah placed a copy of Thomas's letter on the table.

"Monday, the ledger goes to the board, the financial regulator, the fraud investigators, and counsel for the pension funds Sebastian stole from."

Celia looked alarmed.

"You will destroy the company."

"No. The people who committed the fraud created that risk. I'm only ending the concealment."

"And what will you do with Vincent?"

Micah glanced at him.

"That's not your decision anymore."

Celia looked from one child of Anthony Costanza to the other and seemed to understand that the family she had tried to protect through secrets no longer belonged to her version of protection.

Vincent walked to the door.

"If you want any relationship with me, you tell investigators everything. No private deal. No missing years. No more ghosts."

Celia whispered, "And if I refuse?"

May you like

He opened the door.

"Then you stay dead to me by choice this time."
