Chapter 6 - Blood Does Not Choose Loyalty

Vincent wanted to call the police.

Naomi stopped him.

"Not yet."

He stared at her across the bank's private room.

"He has Helen."

"And if we trigger a visible police response, Dante may panic."

"You know him better than I do, apparently."

The accusation landed.

Naomi did not defend herself.

Micah placed both hands on the black ledger.

"He wants this because he thinks it gives him control."

"Or because he wants to destroy it," Naomi said.

"Either way, he needs us to bring it."

Vincent shook his head.

"We make a copy."

"Already doing it," Naomi replied.

She had photographed every page.

Micah looked at the cassette.

"And the tape?"

"We duplicate it before noon."

They returned to the estate through a secure underground parking entrance of a law office Naomi trusted. On the way, Naomi finally told them the part of her history she had hidden.

Sebastian Rossi had met Margaret Price when she was twenty-one. She worked as a bookkeeper in one of his restaurants. Their relationship lasted six years. Naomi was born during the second.

"He paid for my schooling," Naomi said. "Never acknowledged me. Never visited unless he wanted something from my mother."

Micah listened from the rear seat.

"Did Anthony know you existed?"

"Yes. Thomas too."

"Why would Thomas tell Elaine to trust you?"

"I don't know. I was twenty-nine when he died and already in the police. I had met him twice during financial investigations, but I didn't know he knew who my father was."

Vincent turned from the front passenger seat.

"Did you investigate Sebastian?"

"I tried. My unit removed me when they learned about the family connection."

"And later you came to work for my father."

"Anthony recruited me after I left the Met."

"Why?"

"He said he needed one Rossi who hated Sebastian more than he feared him."

Vincent stared at her.

"And you never thought I deserved to know that?"

Naomi's expression tightened.

"Anthony made me swear not to tell you while Sebastian was alive. After Sebastian died, I told myself it no longer mattered. Then Dante found out last year and threatened to expose everything."

"So you hid it because it was embarrassing?"

"I hid it because my brother has spent his life treating blood like a contract. I didn't want you wondering whether every security decision I made belonged to him."

"I am wondering now."

"I know."

Micah leaned forward.

"Did you ever give Dante information?"

"No."

"Did you ever hide information from Vincent because it protected Dante?"

Naomi answered immediately.

"No."

"Would you choose Dante over us because he is your brother?"

Naomi looked at Micah in the mirror.

"Blood tells you who you came from. It doesn't tell you who deserves your loyalty."

Micah looked down at her own hands.

"Good answer."

"It took me forty years to learn it."

At the estate, an old cassette player was waiting in the secured library.

Naomi inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then Thomas Hayes spoke.

Micah recognized his voice instantly, older than in her childhood memories but unmistakable.

"September fourteenth. Anthony is here. Martin Keane left twenty minutes ago. If this recording survives, it is because we failed to make the problem disappear quietly."

Another voice answered.

Anthony.

"Say Sebastian's name."

"Sebastian Rossi."

"Say what he did."

Thomas sighed.

"He moved stolen pension funds through companies connected to our partnership. He forged liabilities to make us appear indebted. He threatened both families."

Anthony said, "And I signed one of the false transfers."

"Under threat."

"I still signed it."

There was a pause.

Anthony continued.

"I also lied to Thomas for three years about Vincent."

Thomas's voice softened.

"Anthony—"

"No. It belongs on the tape. I let him believe I was protecting money when I was protecting my son. Sebastian sent photographs of Vincent outside school. I became exactly as obedient as he wanted."

Vincent closed his eyes.

Micah glanced at him.

On the tape, Thomas said, "You were frightened."

"So were you. You still refused him."

"I had Elaine and Micah hidden by then."

"I didn't know that."

"You weren't supposed to."

The tape crackled.

Then Anthony said something that made Micah sit forward.

"If anything happens to you, Thomas, I transfer the Hayes shares back."

"To Elaine."

"To Elaine first. Micah after."

"Vincent?"

"He keeps enough to live a life that isn't punishment for mine. But he does not inherit what I took from you."

Vincent looked down.

Micah's throat tightened.

Thomas answered, "You didn't take all of it. Sebastian manipulated both of us."

"I took enough."

"Then repair it while you're alive."

"I tried. The board blocked every restructuring. Half of them owe Sebastian favors."

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Then use the trust clause."

"I did."

"Good."

The tape continued.

Anthony said, "There is another problem. Naomi Price."

Naomi went very still.

Thomas replied, "She can be trusted."

"She's Sebastian's daughter."

"Exactly. She knows what it is to be treated like collateral."

Naomi stared at the player.

Anthony said, "And if Sebastian tells her blood matters more than truth?"

Thomas answered without hesitation.

"Then she will decide for herself. That is the one freedom none of us gave our children enough of."

Micah looked at Naomi.

Naomi's eyes shone, but she did not cry.

The final minutes concerned a meeting scheduled for September 17 with Martin Keane and a mechanic named Peter Lyle.

Thomas said, "Lyle claims he was paid to damage my car enough to frighten me, not kill me. I want the instruction in writing."

Anthony cursed.

"Do not drive that car."

"I won't."

"Promise me."

"I promise."

The tape ended.

Micah stared at the machine.

"He promised not to drive it."

Naomi nodded.

"Which means we have a new question."

Vincent said it.

"Why was he driving it three days later?"

Naomi opened the ledger to the contractor section.

"Peter Lyle. If he's alive, he can answer."

She searched through old databases available to her security firm.

Peter Lyle, sixty-eight, lived in Portsmouth.

Vincent checked the time.

9:46 a.m.

"We have two hours before Dante expects the ledger."

Micah said, "Call him."

Naomi found a number.

A man answered on the fifth ring.

"Hello?"

"Mr. Lyle?"

"Who's asking?"

"Naomi Price. I need to speak to you about Thomas Hayes."

Silence.

Then the line clicked dead.

Naomi called again.

No answer.

Micah said, "He knows the name."

"Definitely."

Vincent looked toward the estate gates visible through the library windows.

"We can't reach Portsmouth and be back by noon."

Micah touched the ledger.

"Then we deal with Dante first."

Naomi shook her head.

"We don't give him the original."

"He may know what it looks like."

"We give him the leather cover and copies inside. He will need time to inspect it."

Vincent said, "And Helen?"

"We get her out before he discovers the substitution."

At 11:57, Dante's black car passed through the estate gates.

He had Helen with him.

No visible armed men followed, but Naomi assumed several were nearby.

They met in the sunlit great hall where the silver tray had shattered the day before.

Micah stood beside the marble console. Vincent remained three steps behind her. Naomi was out of sight with the security team.

Dante guided Helen inside by the elbow.

"You look different today, Micah."

"I know more today."

"Knowledge usually ruins people."

"Only the ones who depend on lies."

Dante smiled.

"Where is the ledger?"

Micah held up the black book.

His expression changed instantly.

"Give it to me."

"Let Helen walk to Vincent first."

"You think you're negotiating?"

"You came to my house for my property. I think I'm being generous."

Vincent looked at her.

Dante noticed.

"Your house? That was quick."

Micah did not blink.

"Helen first."

Dante released her.

Helen crossed the hall slowly.

When she reached Vincent, Micah extended the ledger.

Dante took it.

He opened the first page.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then slower.

Micah watched his confidence shift.

"What is this?"

"The history your father tried to erase."

Dante turned another page.

His face hardened.

"Copies."

Micah smiled faintly.

"Of course."

Dante snapped the book shut.

"Where is the original?"

"Safe."

"You lied to me."

"You kidnapped my mother's best friend."

Dante looked toward Vincent.

"Do you know what she has?"

"Yes."

"Then you know she can take everything from you."

Vincent answered calmly.

"If it belongs to her, she isn't taking it. She's receiving it back."

For the first time, Dante looked genuinely confused.

"You would surrender the company?"

"I would surrender stolen control."

"Your father would spit on you."

A voice came from the hidden speaker in the hall.

Anthony's voice from the tape.

I transfer the Hayes shares back.

Dante froze.

Naomi stepped out from the side corridor.

"Your father lied to you too, Dante."

He turned.

His face drained of color.

"You."

"Hello, brother."

Helen stared between them.

Dante's mouth twisted.

"You think that word gives you power over me?"

"No. I think it explains why you've spent your life trying to win a dead man's approval."

Dante took one step toward her.

"You know nothing about me."

"I know Sebastian told you I was the reason he never trusted you. I know he told you he left me proof that would make me his true heir."

Dante's eyes flickered.

Naomi continued.

"There is no inheritance from Sebastian in the ledger. Only evidence that he stole from pensioners, framed Charles Marlowe, threatened children, and destroyed every partnership he touched."

"Liar."

"Read the copy."

Dante looked at the book in his hand.

For one second he seemed less like an enemy and more like a son afraid of discovering his father had lied one final time.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A man's voice spoke urgently through the receiver.

Dante's eyes went to Micah.

"You called Peter Lyle."

Naomi's expression changed.

"How do you know that?"

Dante smiled without warmth.

"Because he called me after you."

Micah stepped forward.

"What did he say?"

"He said Thomas Hayes wasn't alone in the car when he died."

Vincent went still.

"Who was with him?"

Dante slipped the phone into his pocket.

"Ask your mother."

Vincent stared.

"My mother died twelve years ago."

May you like

Dante's smile widened.

"Then Anthony lied very well indeed."
