Chapter 10 - No More Ghosts

David found Marco at the river loading dock behind the warehouse.
Luca stood twenty yards away beside a black sedan, the archive drive in one hand and a phone in the other.
Federal agents were approaching from both sides, but nobody rushed him.
A tanker truck idled nearby, blocking part of the exit lane.
Luca held up the phone.
"One command and the remote copies erase."
David stopped.
Marco stayed two steps behind him.
"You don't have remote access," David said.
"Are you certain?"
"No."
Luca smiled.
"At least you've learned."
David looked at the drive.
"You don't need to destroy it. Give it to Cho. Cooperate."
"And spend the rest of my life in prison?"
"Maybe less if you help."
"You sound like Harlan."
David flinched.
"Then ignore the deal. Do it because there are names on that drive belonging to people who are still hiding from men like you."
"Men like me kept those people useful."
"You kept them owned."
Luca's face hardened.
"Your father believed in rescue. Look what it produced. Mara became an informant. You became a liar. Harlan became a criminal with a badge. Alessandro became a philanthropist when guilt finally got expensive."
Marco said, "And you became what?"
Luca looked at him.
"Practical."
"No," Marco replied. "You became a man who took a three-year-old because you were afraid of a spreadsheet."
For the first time, Luca's composure cracked.
"It is not a spreadsheet."
"Then put it down."
Luca glanced toward the sedan.
David noticed the movement.
"The gate is blocked."
"Not for long."
"Where are you going?"
"Somewhere people understand leverage."
David shook his head.
"There is nowhere left. Emily copied your hardware serial. Pritchard is talking. Harlan is in custody. Alessandro knows you betrayed him."
"Alessandro may not survive the week."
Marco's voice went quiet.
"What did you do?"
Luca smiled again.
"Pritchard was not the only doctor on my payroll."
Marco's jaw tightened.
David said, "Hospital security changed the entire care team after the first attempt."
"Did they?"
Marco touched his earpiece.
"Confirm Romano. Now."
Luca used the distraction to open the sedan door.
Special Agent Cho's voice rang from behind a concrete barrier.
"Luca Sera, step away from the vehicle."
He froze.
"You are surrounded. Put the phone and drive on the ground."
Luca looked at David.
"You think this is victory?"
David glanced back toward the warehouse where Catherine and Logan were being escorted to safety.
"No. That's victory. This is evidence."
Luca followed his gaze.
Something changed in his expression.
Maybe he understood that David no longer valued the archive more than the family.
Maybe that made him less predictable.
Luca slowly lowered the drive.
Then his thumb moved over the phone.
Emily's voice burst through everyone's earpieces.
"I blocked the command. His phone is isolated."
Luca looked at the screen.
NO NETWORK.
Marco almost smiled.
"Accountants."
David said, "Cybersecurity consultant."
"Right."
Luca dropped the phone.
Cho approached with two agents.
"Hands behind your head."
This time he complied.
As they cuffed him, Luca looked at David.
"You still think you get to go home after this?"
David did not answer.
"You falsified access credentials. You bribed sources. You shot Romano. You concealed evidence. You let your wife believe you were dead."
David's face went pale.
Luca smiled.
"Truth does not only punish villains."
"I know," David said.
Cho took the drive from the ground.
"Good. Then you can start telling it."
Marco's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Yes?"
A pause.
His shoulders lowered.
"Thank you."
He ended the call.
David asked, "Alessandro?"
"Stable. The new care team caught a medication discrepancy before anything was administered."
"Luca's second doctor?"
"Being questioned."
David exhaled.
"Good."
Marco looked at him.
"You shot my employer."
"I did."
"We are going to discuss that later."
"I assumed."
"Possibly loudly."
"Fair."
They returned to the warehouse.
Catherine sat on an ambulance step with Logan wrapped in a gray blanket on her lap. Nora had a small bandage near her hairline and was arguing with a paramedic who wanted her evaluated at the hospital.
"I work in a hospital," Nora said.
"That doesn't mean you get to diagnose yourself," the paramedic replied.
"It means I can do it faster."
Catherine saw David.
Logan saw him at the same time.
"Daddy!"
David stopped several feet away.
He looked at Catherine before moving closer.
It was a tiny thing, but she noticed.
He was asking permission.
Catherine nodded.
David knelt.
Logan stared at him with the seriousness of a child trying to match memory to reality.
"You got beard."
David laughed and cried at the same time.
"Yeah. I did."
Logan touched his cheek.
"Scratchy."
"I'm sorry."
"Mommy says sorry lots today."
Catherine closed her eyes briefly.
David looked at her.
"I imagine she does."
Logan held out his teddy bear.
"Teddy missed you."
David took the bear like it was sacred.
"I missed Teddy too."
"And me?"
David's face crumpled.
"More than anything."
Logan climbed into his arms.
David held him and began to shake.
Catherine had imagined this reunion a thousand impossible times after the funeral. In those fantasies, she always ran into David's arms too.
Reality was different.
She sat beside him, close enough that their shoulders touched, but she did not pretend the missing months disappeared because he was alive.
David understood.
"Where do we go now?" he asked.
Special Agent Cho answered from behind them.
"First, somewhere secure. Then interviews. A lot of interviews."
Catherine looked at her.
"Is David under arrest?"
Cho considered the question.
"Not tonight. He has exposure. He also has cooperation agreements to discuss. I am not promising outcomes."
David nodded.
"I don't want promises."
Catherine looked at him.
"Good."
Emily arrived in a federal vehicle ten minutes later. When she saw Logan, she covered her mouth and turned away.
Catherine approached her.
Emily whispered, "I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I should have told you."
"Yes."
"David asked me not to. Harlan threatened me. I kept choosing the next secret because I thought one more would get us through."
Catherine looked toward David holding Logan.
"Secrets do that. They always introduce themselves as temporary."
Emily nodded.
"Do you hate me?"
Catherine thought before answering.
"I hate what you did. I understand why you were afraid. I don't know yet what that means for us."
Emily's eyes filled.
"That's more than I deserve."
"Don't decide what I give you. That's part of the problem."
Emily gave a shaky laugh.
"Right."
Alessandro called from the hospital.
Catherine put him on speaker with David, Marco, and Emily nearby.
"Luca is in custody," Marco said.
"I heard."
"The archive drive is with federal investigators."
"Good."
David stepped forward.
"Alessandro."
Silence.
"David."
"I shot you."
"I noticed."
"Luca manipulated me, but I made the decision."
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
Alessandro was quiet.
"I don't forgive you yet."
David nodded though Alessandro could not see him.
"Fair."
Catherine spoke.
"And Aaron Pierce?"
Another silence.
Alessandro answered, "I will give a full statement about the order I gave and what happened afterward. I have already told my attorney to contact Cho's office."
Marco looked at the phone.
"You understand what that can mean?"
"Yes."
"For the companies too?"
"Yes."
"For us?"
Alessandro took a slow breath.
"Especially for us."
Marco looked down.
Catherine said, "Why now?"
Alessandro answered without drama.
"Because the ring reached you."
"That changed you?"
"No. Pierce did. David did. Nearly dying twice helped. But seeing you demand answers from everyone in that room made excuses sound smaller than they used to."
Catherine did not know whether she believed transformation could happen that quickly.
"Statements are not consequences."
"I know."
"Then accept the consequences."
"I will."
After the call, Cho approached with a sealed evidence pouch.
Inside was the silver wedding ring.
"We photographed and documented the micro-etch. For now, the original is evidence."
Catherine looked at David.
He looked at the ring.
Neither reached for it.
Cho said, "You may get it back eventually."
Catherine surprised herself by answering, "There is no rush."
David's eyes met hers.
"No. There isn't."
Cho led them toward separate vehicles.
Catherine stopped before getting in.
"David."
He turned.
"Yes?"
"When we get somewhere safe, you tell me everything. Not the version that protects me. Not the version your lawyer prefers. Everything."
"I will."
"And if I ask a question you don't want to answer?"
"I answer it anyway."
"And if the answer makes me leave?"
David's face tightened.
"Then you leave knowing the truth."
May you like
Catherine nodded.
"That is the first promise I believe tonight."
