Chapter 8 - The Voice Behind the Second Lie

Catherine pressed the phone so hard to her ear that her fingers hurt.
"Let me hear my son."
The man on the line was quiet for half a second.
"You already did."
"Let me hear him speak."
A rustle.
Then Logan's frightened voice came through.
"Mommy?"
Catherine's knees weakened.
"I'm here, baby. Are you hurt?"
"No. Teddy fell."
"Is Nurse Nora with you?"
"She sleepy."
Catherine's eyes snapped to Marco.
"What did you do to her?"
The man answered, "Nothing permanent. She fought harder than expected."
"If you hurt either of them—"
"Threats waste time, Mrs. Winters. Listen instead."
David moved closer, his face drained of color.
"Who are you?"
The caller laughed softly.
"David Winters. Still making every room about evidence."
David's expression changed.
"Luca."
Marco swore.
Emily looked from one man to the other.
Catherine whispered, "Who is Luca?"
David answered without taking his eyes off the phone.
"Luca Sera. Romano's finance director."
Marco corrected him.
"Former finance director, if he's smart enough to stay former."
The voice on the phone became amused.
"Marco. Loyal to the end. That's almost touching."
Marco stepped closer.
"Where is the boy?"
"Safe while everyone behaves."
"You took him because you want the ledger key."
"At least someone is paying attention."
Catherine stared at Marco.
"This is the person who sold the protected-witness list?"
Marco's silence answered.
Luca said, "Sold is such an ugly word. I exchanged information for stability. Harlan had people who needed identities. I had businesses that needed freedom. Everyone benefited until David decided morality was a career path."
David's jaw tightened.
"Aaron Pierce benefited?"
"Pierce was an accident layered on top of another accident. You people turned him into scripture."
"You altered the boat," David said.
"I authorized a correction after Alessandro's men made a mess. Harlan chose the final method."
Marco's voice dropped.
"You told Alessandro the marina repair came from Harlan's side."
"It did. I simply neglected to mention I arranged it."
Catherine looked at Harlan.
He stood between two arriving federal agents, wrists not yet cuffed but effectively detained.
His face had gone gray.
"You moved the archive," David said to him.
Harlan shook his head.
"No."
"The basement was empty."
"I didn't move it."
Luca heard him through the speaker.
"Raymond, you sound wounded."
Harlan stepped toward the phone before an agent stopped him.
"You were supposed to destroy those records."
"And trust you to remember which crimes were mine and which were yours? No. I prefer insurance."
Catherine felt disgust settle over the room.
"You all collected insurance on each other."
David looked at her.
"Yes."
She appreciated that he did not soften it.
Luca continued.
"Mrs. Winters, I need the ring and the second sequence."
Catherine said nothing.
"Your husband knows what I mean."
"I have the ring."
"And the numbers under Logan's drawing."
Catherine's heart skipped.
Emily whispered, "How does he know?"
David closed his eyes.
"Because he saw the original puzzle system."
"When?" Catherine demanded.
"Six weeks ago. At the records annex."
Luca answered for him.
"David tried to recruit me. He thought I wanted out. I let him believe it."
Marco said, "You led him to Alessandro."
"Yes. Then David shot Alessandro, which made everyone wonderfully suspicious of everyone else."
Catherine looked at David.
"You said you knew Alessandro was wearing armor."
"Luca told me he would be."
"And you believed him."
David's face tightened.
"I was angry."
"That is not an answer."
"I wanted Alessandro to feel cornered enough to show me where the archive was. It was reckless."
"Reckless is forgetting an umbrella."
"I know."
Luca interrupted.
"Marriage counseling later. Bring the key to the old courthouse annex where David and Alessandro had their misunderstanding. Ninety minutes."
David shook his head.
"No."
Catherine said, "I will be there."
David turned on her.
"Cath."
"Logan is there."
"That's why you don't walk in with the real key."
Luca's voice sharpened.
"No substitutions. The ring's micro-etch is easy to verify. The second sequence will be tested against the drive. If it fails, the conversation ends badly."
Catherine's voice turned cold.
"Let me talk to Nora."
A pause.
Then Nora came on, groggy but alert.
"Catherine?"
"Are you okay?"
"Head hurts. Logan is okay. Two men stopped us with fake police lights. I should've kept driving."
"This is not your fault."
"I know. Still furious."
Even now, Nora sounded like Nora.
Catherine almost cried.
"Stay with Logan."
"Obviously."
"I'm coming."
Nora lowered her voice.
"Don't do anything stupid."
"You already used that line today."
"It remains accurate."
The call cut off.
Luca said, "Ninety minutes."
Then the line died.
The federal inspector general investigator, Special Agent Lena Cho, entered the corridor with the assistant U.S. attorney from Emily's video call. Cho was compact, calm, and visibly unimpressed by everyone.
"Nobody leaves," she said.
Catherine stepped toward her.
"My son was kidnapped."
"I heard."
"Then we are leaving."
"No. We are going to plan."
"You don't have ninety minutes to form a task force."
Cho held her gaze.
"Good. Neither do they."
She pointed at Harlan.
"Detective, sit."
"I can help you find Sera."
"You can help by answering questions."
"If Luca has the archive, you need me."
David said, "He's right."
Catherine looked at him.
"You are agreeing with Harlan now?"
"I am agreeing that he knows Luca's habits."
Harlan looked at David.
"Sera will not keep Logan at the annex."
"Why?"
"Because he never holds leverage where he conducts an exchange. He learned that from me."
Cho's face hardened.
"Charming."
Harlan ignored her.
"The annex is a checkpoint. Catherine arrives, Luca verifies the key, then he gives a location for the child."
Catherine's stomach turned.
"How many locations?"
"Usually two or three."
"Usually?"
Harlan finally looked ashamed.
"Yes."
Catherine stepped close enough that one agent moved between them.
"You did this to other families."
"I told myself it prevented worse outcomes."
"Did you attend their funerals too?"
He looked away.
Catherine understood his answer.
Cho said, "We can use the exchange."
David immediately objected.
"No live key."
Emily raised her laptop.
"We may not need to risk it. If Luca tests the key against an encrypted drive, we can give him a container that validates the correct sequence but opens a controlled copy."
Marco looked at her.
"Can you build that in an hour?"
"If David tells me the encryption structure."
David nodded.
"Yes."
Catherine held up the ring.
"And this?"
Cho said, "We photograph the micro-etch and make a replica."
Marco shook his head.
"Luca will inspect weight and wear."
David looked at Catherine's hand.
"Then use the real ring."
She stared at him.
"You gave it away once already."
"Because I believed I would not live to return it."
"And now?"
David's expression softened.
"Now it is just metal. Logan matters."
The words settled between them.
Catherine closed her fist around the ring.
"Good answer."
Cho divided the operation. Catherine would enter the annex with a concealed audio transmitter and the real ring. David would remain in a mobile command vehicle initially, because Luca expected him to try something and might react if he appeared too early. Emily would build the controlled encrypted container. Marco would coordinate with Cho's tactical team but stay out of Catherine's line of sight.
Harlan would remain in custody.
"No," Harlan said.
Cho looked at him.
"That was not a question."
"If Luca hears federal movement, he relocates the boy. He uses a scanner for standard tactical channels."
"We know."
"He also watches municipal dispatch anomalies. If your people stage too close, he will see it."
Cho leaned toward him.
"Then tell me how to approach."
Harlan did.
For ten minutes he described Luca's habits with the precision of a man finally forced to map his own sins for someone else.
When he finished, Catherine asked, "Why help?"
Harlan looked at her.
"Because Luca took a child."
She laughed in disbelief.
"You tracked my child."
"I never ordered anyone to take him."
"That is the line you chose?"
Harlan lowered his eyes.
"No. It's only the last line I have left."
Catherine walked away before she said something she could not take back.
Emily completed the controlled drive with twenty-three minutes remaining.
"If Luca enters both sequences, it will open a directory that looks real," she said. "Meanwhile it will send us a handshake from whatever machine he uses. If that machine is connected to his archive system, we may get a route."
David squeezed her shoulder.
"You always were better than me at this."
Emily looked at him.
"Do not make forgiveness sound like nostalgia."
He let his hand fall.
"Understood."
Catherine watched them.
"After Logan is safe, all of you are going to sit in one room and tell the truth until there is none left."
Marco said, "Can I be excused?"
"No."
"Worth asking."
At the annex, Catherine parked beneath a broken lamp.
The building had been abandoned for years, its windows dark and its stone steps wet from recent rain.
Her transmitter was hidden beneath the collar of her scrubs.
Cho's voice came softly through an earpiece.
"We have you."
Catherine touched the ring in her pocket.
"I'm going in."
The front door opened by itself with a mechanical click.
Inside, a single lamp illuminated a long records table.
A laptop waited at the center.
No Luca.
A speaker crackled overhead.
"Put the ring beside the laptop, Catherine."
She recognized his voice.
"Where is Logan?"
"After verification."
"Let me see him."
A monitor turned on.
Logan sat beside Nora in a room with painted cinderblock walls. Nora had one arm around him.
Catherine leaned closer.
Behind them was a small rectangular window.
Through it she could see the top of a water tower.
Nora looked straight at the camera.
Then she deliberately lifted Logan's teddy bear and turned it so its stitched paw pointed toward the window.
Catherine understood.
She whispered, "Cho, did you see that?"
"Yes. Working it."
The speaker came alive again.
"Ring. Now."
Catherine placed the silver band on the table.
The laptop camera focused on it.
A small scanner beside the computer lit up and magnified the interior engraving.
Luca said, "Good. Now enter the second sequence."
Catherine looked at the keyboard.
"I want David here."
Silence.
"Why?"
"Because if I give you this and you kill him anyway, I lose both of them."
"David is irrelevant now."
"Not to me."
Luca laughed.
"That has been the central inconvenience from the beginning."
Catherine's blood went cold.
"What does that mean?"
"It means David could have walked away seven months ago. Harlan offered him a new identity. Alessandro offered him money. I offered him silence. He refused because he wanted to come home clean."
Catherine closed her eyes.
"He wanted to come home."
"Always."
For the first time, someone had said it without using it to justify the lie.
Catherine opened her eyes.
"Bring him in."
Cho whispered in her ear, "We can do that. The water tower is narrowing the location. Keep Luca talking."
Catherine said, "You want the numbers? David enters them."
A long pause.
Then the front door clicked again.
May you like
Luca said, "Fine. Bring him."
Catherine realized the second phase had begun.
