Chapter 9 - The House Beneath the Water Tower

David entered the annex with his hands visible.
Catherine wanted to run to him, but the overhead speaker spoke first.
"Stop beside the table."
David stopped.
He looked at Catherine.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Me neither."
"Good."
The strange answer almost made him smile.
Luca said, "Touching. Enter the sequence."
David looked at the laptop.
"Show me Logan live."
The monitor changed to the room with Nora and Logan.
Nora was speaking softly to the boy, though there was no audio.
David's face collapsed for half a second.
"He got bigger."
Catherine looked at him.
"Seven months does that."
He nodded as if accepting another sentence.
"Yeah."
Luca's voice sharpened.
"Numbers."
David sat at the laptop.
"Catherine enters them."
"Why?"
"Because you said you wanted proof she has the second half."
"I do."
"Then watch her."
Catherine understood that David wanted Luca focused on her hands rather than on his.
She entered the twelve digits Emily had recovered from Logan's drawing.
The screen displayed: KEY ACCEPTED.
Then a directory appeared containing hundreds of file names: dates, case numbers, corporate entities, initials.
Luca inhaled audibly over the speaker.
"Open 7A."
David did.
A document appeared with lines of payments and witness codes. It was part of Emily's controlled copy, built from fragments David remembered.
"Scroll."
David scrolled.
"Enough," Luca said.
Catherine looked at the monitor showing Logan.
"You verified it. Give me my son."
"Not yet."
"That was the deal."
"The deal changed."
David leaned toward the speaker.
"Of course it did."
Catherine's earpiece clicked softly.
Cho whispered, "We matched the water tower and window angle. Possible site is a decommissioned youth residence three miles north. Teams moving without sirens. Keep them occupied."
Catherine said aloud, "What else do you want?"
"The drive beneath the laptop. Remove it."
She crouched and found a small black storage device taped underneath.
David glanced at her.
That was not part of their setup.
Luca said, "That contains the real archive index. Your controlled little performance gave me something useful. Your key validated my copy."
David went still.
Catherine's stomach dropped.
Emily's trap had been reversed.
Luca laughed.
"Did you think I would connect the real archive to a machine you brought?"
David said, "You needed the key only once."
"Exactly."
"Then why keep Logan?"
"Because I need time to leave."
Catherine's voice turned sharp.
"You let them go now."
"When I am airborne."
"No."
"You are in a poor negotiating position."
David looked directly at one of the hidden ceiling cameras.
"Actually, Luca, so are you."
"Am I?"
"The index you just decrypted is traceable."
Silence.
"No network connection," Luca said.
"It doesn't need one."
Catherine looked at David, unsure whether this was true.
He continued confidently.
"Pritchard used time-based validation tied to a hardware serial. When you opened the index, it exposed the serial to the local machine. Emily's container recorded it."
Luca laughed again, but less easily.
"Bluff."
"Maybe."
Marco would have appreciated the word.
Catherine's earpiece whispered.
"Site confirmed. Nora and Logan visible through thermal. Hold."
Her entire body wanted to move.
She forced herself to remain still.
Luca said, "Leave the annex. Both of you. Walk to your car and drive south. If you turn north, the boy pays for it."
David looked at Catherine.
She nodded once.
They walked outside.
The rain had started again, soft and cold.
David reached for her arm.
She pulled away.
"Not yet."
"I know."
They got into the car.
Catherine drove south.
For nearly two miles, neither spoke.
Then Cho's voice came through.
"We have entered the residence. Two suspects detained. Nora and Logan are not in the room."
Catherine gripped the wheel.
"What?"
"The video feed was looped within the last four minutes."
David swore.
"Luca moved them while we were decrypting."
Catherine hit the steering wheel.
"Where?"
Cho said, "Nora left us something. We found the teddy bear near a service exit. One paw has blood on it, likely from a small cut on her hand, marking the north door. Tire impressions lead toward Route 24."
Catherine felt panic rise.
David put one hand near her arm but did not touch her.
"Breathe."
"Do not tell me to breathe."
"Okay."
"Find them."
"We will."
Her secure phone rang.
Luca.
She answered.
"Where is he?"
"You sound upset."
"Where is Logan?"
"Closer than you think. Turn left at the next light."
David shook his head.
Catherine whispered, "Cho?"
"We hear him. Do what he says for now."
She turned left.
Luca guided them through a series of streets toward an industrial district near the river.
David looked out the window.
"He's taking us to Alessandro's old customs warehouse."
Catherine remembered the news stories about Romano's burned vehicle.
"The place where Alessandro supposedly died?"
"Near it."
"Why?"
"Because that's where Luca staged the fire."
Catherine looked at him.
"You know that?"
"I suspected."
"Another thing you didn't tell me."
"I have a long list."
"You do."
They reached a fenced property with a warehouse beyond it. The gate opened remotely.
Cho said, "Catherine, we cannot follow close without being seen. We have aerial coverage at distance."
"Understood."
David looked at her.
"You don't have to go inside."
"Stop saying that."
"I'm trying to give you choices."
"Then give me useful ones."
He nodded.
"Stay three steps behind me. If Luca appears, don't stand between us."
"That is not a choice."
"Fair."
Inside, the warehouse was brightly lit by temporary work lamps. Metal shelving formed long aisles.
At the center stood Nora.
She held Logan's hand.
Catherine nearly ran forward.
A man stepped from behind a support column.
Luca Sera was in his late forties, neat gray suit, calm expression, thin-framed glasses. He looked more like a university administrator than the architect of a criminal archive.
He held no visible weapon.
Two armed men stood farther back.
Logan saw Catherine.
"Mommy!"
Catherine took one step.
Luca lifted a hand.
"Not yet."
Nora glared at him.
"You keep saying that. It's getting old."
Luca ignored her.
David said, "You have the key. Let them go."
"I have access to one layer. I need your authentication phrase for the sealed witness directory."
David's face changed.
"There is no phrase."
"Pritchard says there is."
"Pritchard guessed."
"Then convince me."
Catherine looked at the men in the distance.
"Luca, you already have enough to run. Why keep doing this?"
He looked at her almost kindly.
"Because running is expensive. Silence is more expensive. And the archive contains names that can buy me a life anywhere."
"People are not currency."
"Everyone becomes currency when enough institutions fail."
David said, "That's what Harlan taught you."
"Harlan taught me systems survive by sacrificing individuals. Alessandro taught me loyalty is just debt with better tailoring. You taught me idealists are useful until they become inconvenient."
Marco's voice came faintly through Catherine's earpiece.
"We are in position on west side."
Luca looked suddenly toward the roof.
Catherine froze.
Had he heard?
No.
He smiled at David.
"You brought them."
David did not react.
Luca pointed at Catherine's ear.
"She is wearing a receiver."
One of the armed men moved toward her.
Nora stepped forward.
"Hey."
The man glanced at Nora.
She kicked a rolling metal cart into his path.
It crashed loudly, forcing him to stumble back.
Logan screamed.
Catherine ran.
Everything happened at once.
Marco and federal agents entered from the west doors shouting commands.
Luca grabbed the black archive drive and ran toward a side exit.
David moved to block one of the armed men without attacking him, buying Catherine two seconds.
She reached Logan and dropped to her knees.
"Mommy!"
He threw himself into her arms.
Catherine held him so tightly he complained.
"Too tight."
She loosened her grip but did not let go.
Nora crouched beside them.
"We're moving. Now."
Catherine looked up.
David was across the warehouse, hands raised as agents secured the armed men.
Marco disappeared through the side exit after Luca.
Catherine shouted, "David!"
He turned.
For the first time in seven months, Catherine saw her husband and son look at each other in the same room.
David stopped moving.
Logan whispered, "Daddy."
David's face broke.
He took one step toward them.
Then a sharp alarm sounded from the warehouse office.
Emily's voice came through Catherine's earpiece.
"The archive drive is triggering a wipe sequence. If Luca gets out of range with it, we lose everything."
David looked toward the side exit.
Then back at Logan.
Catherine understood the choice on his face.
She said, "Go."
David stared at her.
"Cath—"
"Go finish it. Then come back."
May you like
This time, she was the one choosing the separation.
David nodded and ran after Marco.
