Chapter 4 - The Woman in White

The temporary custody hearing was set for Friday morning.

By Thursday night, Julian had given interviews to two business reporters, three family members had posted statements about Claire's "emotional crisis," and someone had sent an anonymous tip to a gossip site claiming she had threatened to flee the country with the twins.

Claire watched none of it.

Maya watched all of it.

"He's building a narrative," Maya said.

Claire rocked Leo near the nursery window.

"He always does."

"What narrative?"

"That he is calm and I am difficult."

Maya looked at the baby.

"Convenient."

"It worked in our marriage."

"It won't necessarily work in court."

Claire smiled tiredly.

"That's almost comforting."

The doorbell rang at eight thirteen.

Security checked the camera.

A woman in a long coat stood alone.

Sienna.

Claire's entire body tightened.

Maya said, "Do not open that door."

Sienna looked directly at the camera.

Then raised both hands.

She held a flash drive between two fingers.

Claire said, "Let her in."

"No."

"She came alone."

"That means nothing."

Sienna spoke through the intercom.

"Claire, I know you're watching."

Maya pressed the button.

"What do you want?"

Sienna flinched.

"You're the lawyer."

"Correct."

"I need to talk to Claire."

"No."

Sienna lifted the flash drive.

"Then tell her Julian knows about her evidence package."

Claire stepped closer to the monitor.

Maya said, "How?"

Sienna swallowed.

"Because someone inside the federal intake office called Richard."

Maya's expression changed.

"That's a serious allegation."

"I know."

"Name?"

"Let me inside."

Claire said, "Maya."

"No."

"If she's lying, we learn something."

"If she's carrying a recording device, we learn something else."

Sienna said through the intercom, "I am carrying two phones. One is mine. One belongs to Julian. I stole it."

Maya stared at the screen.

Claire said, "That sounds useful."

Ten minutes later, Sienna sat at the kitchen table.

Dana Holt was present again.

So was Priya.

Sienna looked smaller without Julian beside her.

Claire did not offer coffee.

"Start talking."

Sienna looked at the twins in the bassinet.

"I didn't know about the beneficiary change."

Claire's face stayed blank.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"Good."

"I knew Julian wanted you gone."

"Gone from the marriage?"

Sienna looked down.

"At first."

"Then?"

"He started asking strange questions."

"What questions?"

"How long people can stay confused after surgery. Whether pain medication affects memory. Whether an agreement signed in a hospital can be challenged."

Maya's eyes hardened.

"When?"

"Two months ago."

Claire felt sick.

Sienna continued.

"He asked me to research postpartum psychiatric holds."

Dana said, "Why?"

"He said you were unstable."

Claire whispered, "He started calling me unstable after I asked about Cross Advisory."

Sienna closed her eyes.

"I know."

"You knew I was looking?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Julian found a list in your desk."

Claire remembered the list.

Four shell companies.

She had left it deliberately.

Maya looked at her.

"You baited him."

Claire nodded.

Sienna stared.

"You wanted him to find it?"

"Yes."

"He went insane that night."

"I know."

"He called Richard."

"Good."

Sienna shook her head.

"You don't understand. Richard wasn't surprised."

Claire leaned forward.

"That is exactly what I wanted to know."

Sienna pushed Julian's phone across the table.

"Then take it."

Maya said, "What's on it?"

"Messages. Voice notes. Photos. A hidden chat app."

Priya asked, "Passcode?"

Sienna gave it.

"Will he know you took it?"

"Yes."

"Then why are you here?"

Sienna's eyes filled.

"Because I was supposed to be the mother after you disappeared."

Claire's voice became very quiet.

"Explain."

Sienna gripped the edge of the table.

"Julian told me after the custody papers were signed, you would take the money and leave Chicago."

"I never said that."

"I know."

"When did you know?"

"Yesterday."

"Yesterday?"

"He told me to pack."

"For where?"

"Geneva."

Maya frowned.

"Why Geneva?"

"Richard has accounts there."

Priya said, "Names?"

"I don't know the account names."

"Then what do you know?"

Sienna looked at Claire.

"I know Julian said we couldn't risk you changing your mind."

Claire felt the room shrink.

"What did he mean?"

"I asked."

"And?"

"He said, 'Dad has a contingency.'"

Dana said, "Exact words?"

"Yes."

Claire looked at Sienna's hands.

They were shaking.

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

"Then why are you here?"

Sienna laughed bitterly.

"Because last night I heard Richard tell Julian that once you were handled, they would deal with me."

Claire stared.

"Deal with you."

"Those words."

Maya asked, "Did you record it?"

Sienna nodded.

"On the flash drive."

Priya reached for it.

Maya stopped her.

"Chain of custody first."

Sienna looked at Claire.

"I thought I was winning."

Claire's expression did not move.

"You walked into my hospital room in white."

"I know."

"You smiled while they offered me money for my sons."

"I know."

"You called yourself their future."

Sienna began to cry.

"I know."

Claire stood.

"Then do not ask me to make you feel better."

"I'm not."

"Good."

Sienna wiped her face.

"I came because I helped them."

Maya said, "How?"

"Cross Advisory."

Priya opened her notebook.

"What did it do?"

"At first, actual communications work. Then Julian asked me to invoice consulting projects that never happened."

"Amounts?"

"Fifty thousand. Seventy-five. Ninety."

"Where did the money go?"

"Some stayed in the company. Some I wired where he told me."

"Where?"

"Accounts in Delaware. Cayman. Switzerland."

"Did you know it was illegal?"

Sienna looked away.

"Eventually."

Claire said, "And you stayed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I loved him."

Claire's laugh was sharp.

"No. You loved what standing beside him made you feel."

Sienna met her eyes.

"Maybe."

Claire sat again.

"Keep going."

Sienna said, "Three months ago, Richard started using my company without asking. Money would arrive and leave within hours."

Priya asked, "Who controlled the outbound wires?"

"Julian had my token."

"Your authentication device?"

"Yes."

"Did you report it missing?"

"No."

"So on paper, you sent them."

Sienna nodded.

Priya looked at Maya.

"She's exposed."

Sienna said, "I know."

Claire studied her.

"That's why you're here."

"Partly."

"Not because of me."

"No."

"Not because of the twins."

Sienna looked at them.

Her voice dropped.

"Not at first."

Claire appreciated the answer because it was ugly and honest.

Maya said, "What else is on the phone?"

Sienna reached over and opened a hidden chat.

The screen showed Julian, Richard, and a contact saved only as M.

Claire said, "Margaret?"

Sienna nodded.

There were messages about "Claire containment."

About "the signature event."

About "liability after discharge."

Then one message from Richard:

IF SHE REFUSES TO LEAVE, MOVE TO PHASE TWO.

Claire looked at Sienna.

"What is phase two?"

"I don't know."

"Don't lie."

"I don't."

Maya scrolled.

Another message from Julian:

MARCUS HAS THE SCHEDULE. HE'LL CONFIRM THE WINDOW.

Priya looked up.

"Marcus Vale."

The investigator.

Sienna whispered, "He wasn't just watching you."

"What was he doing?"

"I don't know."

Dana said, "We need law enforcement."

Maya nodded.

"We need more than family services."

Claire stared at the phone.

Then she saw a photo attachment.

Her own house.

Taken from across the street.

Timestamped the day before she delivered.

Another.

Her obstetrician's office.

Another.

The hospital parking garage.

Another.

A close image of Claire loading groceries into her car.

She felt Leo's cry in her bones before he made a sound.

Sienna covered her mouth.

"I didn't see those."

Claire turned the phone away.

Maya said, "Claire?"

"I'm okay."

"No, you're not."

Claire looked at her.

"That isn't relevant."

"It is to me."

For the first time, Claire's composure cracked.

She stood so fast the chair scraped.

"I let him sleep beside me."

Nobody moved.

"I let him touch my stomach."

Her voice shook.

"I let him put his hand on Leo and Oliver when they kicked."

Sienna started crying again.

Claire pointed at her.

"Do not."

Sienna froze.

"Do not cry because you are afraid of consequences."

Claire's chest rose and fell.

"I was married to a man who photographed my doctor's office while pretending to build a nursery."

Maya came closer.

"Sit down."

Claire shook her head.

"I can't."

"Then stand."

Claire looked toward the nursery.

"I need to see them."

She walked out.

Five minutes later, Maya joined her.

Claire sat between the bassinets.

Maya closed the door.

"You can fall apart for five minutes."

Claire stared at the boys.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because if I start, I don't know if I stop."

"Then don't stop."

Claire looked at her.

"I have a hearing tomorrow."

"You also have a life."

Claire's eyes filled.

"I married him."

"You did."

"I defended him."

"Yes."

"I told my father I was lucky."

Maya knelt beside her.

"You did not know."

Claire whispered, "Maybe he married me because of my father."

Maya said nothing.

Claire looked at her.

"You think so too."

"I think Richard knew who you were."

"Julian?"

"I don't know."

Claire wiped her face.

"We find out."

Maya nodded.

"We find out."

When they returned to the kitchen, Sienna was gone from the chair.

Dana stood at the front window.

"She stepped outside to take a call."

Claire's stomach dropped.

"From whom?"

Dana opened the door.

The porch was empty.

Sienna's coat lay on the chair.

Her purse was still on the table.

Her car remained in the driveway.

Maya looked down the street.

"No."

Claire picked up Sienna's purse.

Her phone was inside.

Dana called police.

Priya stared at the open hidden chat on Julian's stolen phone.

A new message appeared.

From Richard.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING HER OUT.

Claire looked toward the empty sidewalk.

Maya whispered, "They knew she was here."

Claire's voice went cold.

"Then someone told them."

Nobody spoke.

The house was locked.

The meeting had been private.

Only five people knew Sienna had arrived.

Claire looked around the kitchen.

At Maya.

At Priya.

At Dana.

At Amelia, asleep upstairs in the guest room.

May you like

And for the first time since the hospital, Claire understood that Richard's reach was not outside the room.

It was inside it.
