Chapter 6 - The False Victory

Julian was released on bond the next morning.
Richard's attorneys called it proof the case was collapsing.
Margaret issued a statement calling the investigation "a grotesque attack on a respected family by a disturbed former daughter-in-law."
By noon, Claire's temporary custody hearing had become a media event.
Maya found her in a courthouse conference room, feeding Oliver from a bottle.
"He's here."
Claire did not look up.
"Julian?"
"Yes."
"With Margaret?"
"And Richard."
"Of course."
Maya sat.
"His lawyers filed new evidence."
Claire looked at her.
"What evidence?"
"A psychiatric evaluation."
"I have never had one."
"Exactly."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
Maya placed a copy on the table.
It appeared to be a clinical report dated two months earlier.
Patient: Claire Vance.
Diagnosis: delusional disorder, persecutory features.
Claire stared.
"This is fake."
"I know."
"It says I attended sessions with Dr. Ellis Rowan."
"Do you know him?"
"No."
"Have you ever spoken to him?"
"No."
Maya turned another page.
"There are signed consent forms."
Claire's signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked real.
Too real.
Claire whispered, "Julian."
Maya nodded.
"He had access to hundreds of documents you signed."
Claire felt anger rise.
"Will the judge believe this?"
"Not if we can prove fraud."
"Can we?"
"I called Rowan's clinic. They refused to discuss records without authorization."
Claire grabbed the pen.
"Give me the form."
Maya handed it over.
Claire signed.
"Now call."
Ten minutes later, Maya spoke to the clinic administrator on speaker.
"Ms. Chen, I can confirm there is a patient file."
Claire felt the room tilt.
Maya said, "For Claire Vance?"
"Yes."
"Dates?"
"Six visits."
Claire interrupted.
"I was never there."
The administrator paused.
Maya said, "We need access logs, intake method, payment source, and telehealth records."
"That requires legal review."
Maya's voice sharpened.
"The patient is sitting beside me and is alleging identity fraud in an active custody proceeding."
The administrator went quiet.
"We will escalate."
The call ended.
Claire looked at Maya.
"They created a medical history."
"Yes."
"How?"
"We find out."
A bailiff knocked.
"Ten minutes."
In the courtroom, Julian sat beside his attorneys.
He looked tired but composed.
Margaret sat behind him.
Richard sat beside her.
Sienna was absent.
Amelia sat behind Claire.
The judge entered.
Arguments began.
Julian's attorney spoke first.
"Mr. Vance is deeply concerned about the children's safety."
Claire almost laughed.
Maya put a hand on her wrist.
The attorney continued.
"Mrs. Vance has demonstrated escalating paranoia centered on imaginary financial conspiracies."
Maya rose.
"Objection to characterization."
"Sustained."
The attorney held up the psychiatric report.
"We have medical evidence."
Maya stood.
"That report is contested as fraudulent."
The judge looked at Claire.
"Mrs. Vance, have you seen this physician?"
"No, Your Honor."
"Ever?"
"No."
Julian's attorney said, "Denial is consistent with—"
The judge's face hardened.
"Counsel, do not diagnose a litigant."
He sat.
Maya called Nora Bell.
The hospital social worker testified.
"Mrs. Vance was oriented, coherent, and physically recovering from surgery."
"Did you observe coercive behavior?"
"Yes."
"From whom?"
"Mr. Vance and several family members."
"Did anyone offer money in exchange for custody?"
"Yes."
"Did Mrs. Vance appear confused?"
"No."
"Did she ask relevant questions?"
"Yes."
Julian's attorney cross-examined.
"Ms. Bell, you are not a psychiatrist."
"No."
"So you cannot say Mrs. Vance lacked a psychiatric condition."
"I can say she knew where she was, who her children were, what documents were being presented, and why I was present."
"Nothing further."
Then Dana testified.
Then Amelia.
Julian stared at his sister the entire time.
Maya asked, "Did you see trust documents related to the twins?"
"Yes."
"Did you see loans secured against those trusts?"
"Yes."
"Did you see a beneficiary-change form involving Claire Vance?"
"Yes."
Julian's attorney objected.
The judge allowed limited testimony.
Amelia continued.
"The successor beneficiary listed was Sienna Cross."
A murmur moved through the room.
Julian looked at Richard.
Richard did not move.
During cross-examination, Julian's attorney attacked Amelia.
"You are angry at your family."
"Yes."
"You expect us to trust you?"
"No."
"Then why should the court?"
Amelia looked at the judge.
"Because the documents exist."
Maya smiled slightly.
At the lunch recess, Claire stood in the hallway.
Julian approached before security stopped him.
"Claire."
She turned.
His face was different now.
No smirk.
No performance.
"Five minutes."
"No."
"Please."
Maya stepped closer.
Julian said, "You think you understand everything."
Claire looked at him.
"I understand you threatened my father."
His face changed.
Margaret, several feet away, stiffened.
Claire saw it.
"You did know."
Julian whispered, "Not here."
"You contacted Daniel Marlowe two days before he died."
"Claire."
"You told him your father doesn't lose."
Julian glanced at Richard.
Richard's jaw tightened.
Claire said, "Did you marry me because of him?"
Julian's face went pale.
"Not at first."
The answer hit harder than a lie.
Claire stopped breathing.
Maya said, "Julian, stop talking."
But he kept going.
"I saw your name at a foundation dinner."
Claire whispered, "You recognized it."
"Yes."
"Because of my father."
"Yes."
"Did Richard tell you to approach me?"
"No."
"Why did you?"
Julian's eyes filled.
"Because I wanted to know what Daniel left you."
Claire stared.
Margaret hissed, "Julian."
He ignored her.
Claire's voice broke.
"So our first date was an investigation."
"At first."
"At first."
"I fell in love with you."
Claire laughed in disbelief.
"You expect that sentence to save you?"
"No."
"Then why say it?"
"Because it's true."
"You built our marriage on a search for evidence."
"Yes."
"You had children with me."
"I love our sons."
"You tried to buy them."
"No. I was trying to keep them away from this."
Claire stared.
"What?"
Julian looked at Richard.
Then Margaret.
"I thought if you took the money and left, you'd be safe."
Claire's anger sharpened.
"You filed for custody."
"Because my father said if you kept the boys, you would keep fighting."
Maya said, "This conversation is over."
Julian stepped closer.
"I didn't know about your father's crash."
Claire looked at him.
"You threatened him."
"I was twenty-five. My father told me Daniel was trying to destroy the company. I repeated words I didn't understand."
Richard shouted, "Enough."
The hallway went silent.
Julian looked at him.
For the first time, something like hatred crossed his face.
Claire whispered, "What didn't you understand?"
Julian answered.
"That South Creek wasn't about padded invoices."
Richard moved toward him.
Security blocked the path.
Julian said, "It was about hazardous waste."
Claire stared.
"Illegal dumping?"
"Yes."
"People were exposed?"
"Yes."
"Did my father know?"
"He found manifests."
Maya said, "Where are they?"
Julian looked at Claire.
"Gone."
"Destroyed?"
"I don't know."
Richard shouted, "Do not answer."
Julian turned.
"You told me he was greedy."
Richard's face was stone.
"You are confused."
"You told me he wanted money."
"He did."
"You told me the crash was bad luck."
"It was."
Julian looked back at Claire.
"I believed him."
Claire whispered, "And later?"
Julian's eyes dropped.
"Later I knew he lied about other things."
"But you stayed."
"Yes."
"You helped."
"Yes."
"Why?"
He looked at her.
"Because once you inherit a machine, you start telling yourself you can control where it goes."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Julian nodded once.
"No."
The bailiff called everyone back.
Inside the courtroom, Maya received a message.
She read it.
Then passed the phone to Claire.
DR. ROWAN CLINIC CONFIRMS FILE CREATED REMOTELY. NO VIDEO SESSIONS. PAYMENTS FROM VANCE MERIDIAN HEALTH BENEFITS ACCOUNT.
Claire looked at Maya.
Maya whispered, "We have them."
The judge reconvened.
Maya presented the update.
Julian's attorney objected.
The judge ordered the clinic records preserved and rejected the psychiatric report for interim purposes.
Then he ruled.
"The children will remain with their mother pending full custody proceedings. Mr. Vance will have no unsupervised contact until further order."
Claire closed her eyes.
Behind Julian, Margaret whispered something furious.
The judge continued.
"I am also referring the apparent fabrication of medical records to appropriate authorities."
Richard stood.
"Your Honor—"
"Sit down, Mr. Vance."
Richard sat.
For one moment, Claire thought they had won.
Then Ortiz entered through the side door and walked directly to Maya.
She whispered into her ear.
Maya's face changed.
Claire said, "What?"
Maya turned.
"Riverside Four is on fire."
Claire froze.
"The warehouse?"
"Yes."
"The audit files?"
"Evidence teams removed some."
"Some?"
Maya swallowed.
"Not all."
Across the courtroom, Richard lowered his eyes.
Claire saw it.
May you like
And suddenly the fire did not feel like disaster.
It felt like confession.
