Chapter 5 - The Vance Ledger

Sienna was found two hours later.
Alive.
A patrol officer spotted her walking barefoot along a service road three miles from Claire's house.
She had no coat, no phone, and a bruise along one wrist.
She refused an ambulance until a detective promised to take her somewhere Julian could not reach.
By midnight, the case was no longer a family dispute.
Financial-crimes detectives and federal agents had taken custody of Julian's phone, the flash drive, Amelia's banker box, and the hospital footage.
Claire sat in her living room with Maya while both twins slept against her.
Detective Lena Ortiz closed her notebook.
"Ms. Cross says a black SUV pulled beside her."
Claire asked, "Who took her?"
"She says she never saw the driver's face."
"Did she hear anything?"
"One sentence."
"What?"
Ortiz looked at her notes.
"'Richard says go home.'"
Maya said, "And then?"
"She ran when the vehicle stopped at a light."
Claire looked down at Oliver.
"So they didn't want her dead."
Ortiz said, "Not necessarily."
"Then what?"
"Scared. Controlled. Returned to them."
Maya asked, "Did she identify the vehicle?"
"Partial plate."
"Registered?"
"Fleet company connected to Vance Meridian."
Claire laughed softly.
"They really are careless when they're angry."
Ortiz studied her.
"You don't look surprised."
"I stopped being surprised yesterday."
Ortiz closed the notebook.
"One more thing."
Claire waited.
"The leak from the federal intake office."
Maya leaned forward.
"Yes?"
"We have no evidence there was one."
Claire frowned.
"Sienna said Richard knew about the package."
"He may have learned another way."
"How?"
Ortiz looked toward the hallway.
"Who knew you were sending it?"
"Me. Maya. Priya."
Maya said, "My office knew."
Claire added, "And Amelia knew after the hospital."
Ortiz asked, "Anyone else?"
Claire thought.
"No."
Maya said, "The courier company."
Ortiz nodded.
"We are checking."
Claire looked at her.
"You think Richard intercepted the package."
"I think he knew enough to act before an official review would have reached him."
Maya said, "That suggests private surveillance or an inside source."
Ortiz stood.
"We'll know more soon."
After she left, Claire sat in silence.
Maya said, "You should sleep."
Claire smiled.
"That's adorable."
"Try."
"Which baby are you taking?"
"Neither."
"Then I'm not sleeping."
Maya sat beside her.
"Claire."
Claire looked at the dark television screen.
"I keep thinking about my father."
"Daniel."
"He called me the night before he died."
"What did he say?"
"That numbers were honest even when people weren't."
Maya waited.
Claire smiled faintly.
"He used to say that when I was a kid."
"Why did he call that night?"
"He sounded scared."
"Did he say why?"
"He said he had found something he couldn't unsee."
Maya's expression changed.
"You never told police?"
"I did. They said he was stressed about the audit."
"Did they take his files?"
"His employer did."
"Who was the employer?"
"Lang & Pierce Compliance."
Maya pulled out her phone.
"Still exists?"
"Bought out years ago."
"By whom?"
Claire looked at her.
"I don't know."
Maya searched.
Then her face changed.
"What?"
Maya turned the screen.
Lang & Pierce had been acquired six years earlier by Meridian Risk Services.
A Vance Meridian subsidiary.
Claire stared.
"They bought the company that held my father's audit files."
"Yes."
"After he died."
"One year after."
Claire stood.
"The files."
"Claire."
"They didn't need to destroy them if they owned them."
Maya nodded slowly.
"And if Richard was connected to South Creek, he could make them disappear."
Claire called Amelia.
She answered from upstairs, groggy.
"What happened?"
"Did Vance Meridian ever acquire Lang & Pierce?"
Silence.
"Amelia?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Who pushed it?"
"Richard."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Where are the archived audit records?"
"Some acquisitions were moved to the old Riverside warehouse."
Priya, sleeping in a chair across the room, opened her eyes.
"Which warehouse?"
Amelia came downstairs.
"Riverside Four."
Priya sat up.
"That address is on the vendor list."
Claire looked at Maya.
"We go tomorrow."
Maya said, "We call Ortiz."
"We go with Ortiz."
"Better."
The next afternoon, law enforcement entered Riverside Four under a preservation warrant.
The building looked abandoned from the street.
Inside, it was organized like a memory no one wanted.
Rows of boxes.
Archived hard drives.
Insurance binders.
Old audits.
Priya joined the search.
Amelia identified the acquisition code for Lang & Pierce.
It took three hours to find Daniel Marlowe's name.
Claire stood outside the warehouse when Ortiz called her in.
"We found something."
Claire walked past shelves of dust and cardboard.
Ortiz led her to a metal table.
A gray banker box sat open.
Maya was already there.
Priya wore gloves.
Inside the box were Daniel's handwritten notes.
Claire recognized the blocky handwriting instantly.
Her knees weakened.
Maya touched her arm.
"You don't have to read it here."
"Yes, I do."
Priya lifted one page.
Daniel had listed shipments received by South Creek.
Copper wire.
Industrial solvent.
Machine parts.
Safety equipment.
Then he had compared them to invoices.
The paid invoices were sometimes triple the quantity delivered.
The false vendors matched names Claire had found years later.
Blue Cedar.
East Harbor.
Greenway.
Claire whispered, "It was the same network."
Priya nodded.
"An earlier version."
Ortiz said, "There is more."
She opened a sealed evidence envelope.
Inside was a ledger page.
At the top, Daniel had written:
R. VANCE APPROVALS.
Claire stopped breathing.
Below were dates, amounts, initials, and one sentence:
JV PRESENT AT SOUTH CREEK 4/12 - ASKED WHY AUDITOR WAS STILL WORKING.
Claire stared.
Julian's initials.
Maya whispered, "How old was he?"
"Twenty-five."
"Did he know your father then?"
Claire shook her head.
"Not personally."
Ortiz said, "Read the next line."
Claire did.
DANIEL MARLOWE CONTACTED BY J.V. 4/13. CLAIMED HE WANTED TO HELP.
Claire looked up.
"No."
Maya's face hardened.
Julian had contacted her father.
Years before meeting Claire.
Claire whispered, "He knew."
Priya said gently, "At minimum, he knew Daniel Marlowe."
Claire felt rage rise behind her ribs.
"He listened to me tell the story of my father's death."
Nobody answered.
"He held my hand."
Her voice broke.
"He told me he wished he could have met him."
Maya closed her eyes.
Ortiz said, "Claire."
Claire turned.
"There is one more document."
Ortiz placed a photocopy on the table.
A memo from Daniel to his supervisor.
Subject: Threat Concern.
Daniel had written that after refusing to close the South Creek audit, he was approached in the parking lot by Julian Vance.
Julian allegedly told him:
MY FATHER DOES NOT LOSE.
Claire could not speak.
Maya read over her shoulder.
Ortiz said, "This is not proof Julian caused the crash."
Claire nodded mechanically.
"But it is evidence of contact."
"Yes."
"And a threat."
"Potentially."
Claire looked at the date.
Two days before her father's death.
Amelia appeared at the end of the aisle.
She saw Claire's face.
"What happened?"
Claire turned the memo toward her.
Amelia read it.
Her hand covered her mouth.
"No."
Claire said nothing.
Amelia shook her head.
"No. Julian told me he met you at a charity event years later."
"He did."
"He never said—"
"I know."
Amelia started crying.
"Claire, I swear I didn't know."
Claire looked at her sister-in-law.
"I believe you."
That made Amelia cry harder.
Then Priya pulled a second ledger from the box.
"This one is newer."
The first entries were seven years old.
The last entries were less than a month old.
Same vendor network.
Same initials.
But another set appeared repeatedly.
MCV.
Claire frowned.
"Who is MCV?"
Amelia went still.
Maya noticed.
"Amelia?"
Amelia looked at the page.
"No."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Who?"
Amelia whispered, "Margaret Celeste Vance."
Claire stared.
"Your mother."
Amelia nodded.
Priya turned several pages.
Margaret's initials appeared beside insurance transfers, trust loans, and legal payments.
Then one entry:
C.V. EXIT PACKAGE - 150K - MCV APPROVED.
Claire felt something inside her settle.
The offer had been Margaret's.
Not Julian's.
Not merely Richard's.
Margaret had authorized the money intended to buy Claire's children and silence.
Amelia whispered, "She said it was Julian's idea."
Claire looked at her.
"Maybe parts were."
"No."
Amelia pointed to the ledger.
"These approval codes are hers."
Priya nodded.
"They are consistent."
Maya said, "So Margaret was not just supporting Richard."
Claire remembered Margaret entering the hospital with folded arms.
They need the Vance family name.
A bitter mother dragging them down.
Claire whispered, "She built the trap."
Ortiz's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
"What?"
Everyone looked at her.
Ortiz ended the call.
"Julian has been arrested."
Amelia gasped.
Claire said, "For what?"
"Witness intimidation, evidence tampering, and conspiracy-related charges pending review."
Maya asked, "Richard?"
"Not yet."
"Margaret?"
"Not yet."
Claire looked at the ledger.
"They'll run."
Ortiz said, "We have alerts in place."
Claire stared at Margaret's initials.
Then at her father's handwriting.
For six months Claire had believed she was exposing her husband's affair and financial fraud.
Now she understood that she had stepped into a machine that existed before her marriage.
Before her twins.
Before Julian ever smiled at her across a charity ballroom.
Her father had found it first.
He had died with the truth half-finished.
May you like
Claire touched the edge of his notebook.
"Then we finish it."
