Chapter 7 - The Account That Connected Adrian to Alessandra

Alessandra went pale.
"My name?"
Daniel smiled.
"You thought your mother froze everything."
Michael spoke.
"I opened the account."
Adrian turned.
"When?"
"Twenty-six years ago."
Alessandra laughed in disbelief.
"I wasn't born."
"No."
Michael continued:
"It was opened under a future-beneficiary clause."
"For whose child?"
"Victor's."
Silence.
Alessandra stared.
"Why?"
"Insurance."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Against Victor."
"Yes."
Michael continued:
"If Victor exposed me, money linked to his family would be exposed too."
Alessandra's face hardened.
"So you used a child who didn't exist yet."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
Lucia looked ashamed.
Elena asked:
"Did Mom know?"
"No."
Michael answered.
"Not until later."
Daniel smiled.
"That account is the last one still active."
Adrian asked:
"How much?"
"Fourteen million."
Silence.
Alessandra stepped backward.
"No."
Daniel continued:
"Investment growth."
"Property sales."
"Interest."
"Money that began as stolen charity funds."
Adrian looked at her.
"Did you know?"
"No."
He believed her.
Daniel watched.
"That is why I need her signature too."
Alessandra stared.
"My signature."
"Yes."
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"You brought us here for three signatures."
"Four."
Father Thomas.
Adrian.
Elena.
Alessandra.
Daniel continued:
"The vault releases the archive."
"The account requires the beneficiaries."
Elena whispered:
"You want us to transfer it."
"Yes."
"To you."
"To Saint Gabriel Relief."
Father Thomas said:
"You control Saint Gabriel."
"Exactly."
Adrian laughed.
"So you want stolen charity money returned to the charity you run."
Daniel's smile thinned.
"Legally elegant."
Adrian stepped closer.
"And morally identical."
Lucia reached inside her coat.
Daniel tensed.
She removed a flash drive.
"I copied the ledger."
Daniel's face changed.
Father Thomas stared.
Lucia continued:
"Every page."
Michael whispered:
"When?"
"Last year."
Daniel looked furious.
Lucia said:
"And I sent it to three lawyers."
Adrian looked at her.
"You already exposed it?"
"No."
"I created dead-man releases."
Daniel stepped toward her.
Adrian moved between them.
Lucia continued:
"If I fail to contact them every thirty days, copies go to prosecutors and newspapers."
Daniel stared.
"You're bluffing."
Michael said:
"She isn't."
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
Then Elena spoke.
"Open the vault."
Everyone turned.
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"We came for the truth."
Daniel smiled.
Elena continued:
"Not for him."
She looked at Father Thomas.
"Can we open it without transferring anything?"
Thomas nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Daniel said:
"No."
Adrian smiled.
"Then yes."
Father Thomas walked to the altar.
Behind it was a stone panel.
Cross.
Vine.
Three leaves.
Two thorns.
One broken circle.
Exactly Adrian's tattoo.
Michael looked at his son.
"I am sorry."
Adrian stared at the mark.
"For which part?"
Michael had no answer.
Adrian pressed the pattern.
Father Thomas entered a sequence.
Elena inserted a small key hidden in the church register binding.
The panel opened.
Inside was not gold.
Not cash.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Hard drives.
Property deeds.
Passport copies.
Photographs.
A history of crimes hidden behind charity.
Daniel stepped forward.
Adrian blocked him.
"No."
Daniel's face hardened.
"You have no idea what you're holding."
Adrian looked at Lucia.
"No."
"But she does."
Lucia nodded.
"This destroys everyone."
Michael whispered:
"Including me."
Victor too.
Father Thomas.
Church officials.
Businessmen.
Maybe Adrian's own companies if inherited funds had touched them.
Alessandra looked at him.
"What will you do?"
Adrian looked at his father.
Then his mother.
Then Elena.
Then her.
"Something none of them did."
He took out his phone.
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Federal prosecutors."
Daniel lunged.
Father Thomas stepped between them.
Daniel shoved him.
Elena screamed.
Adrian's security entered from the side chapel.
Daniel froze.
Adrian looked at him.
"I stopped taking family advice last night."
Daniel was restrained.
No gunfire.
No dramatic fight.
Just handcuffs.
Father Thomas sat on a pew.
Daniel looked at him.
"You chose them."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"I chose to stop choosing you over what you do."
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian turned toward Michael.
His father looked at the open vault.
Then whispered:
"Now you know everything."
Adrian stared.
"No."
He picked up one envelope.
His own name.
May you like
In Lucia's handwriting.
"Now I decide what deserves to survive."
