Chapter 8 - The Letter Lucia Never Sent

The envelope had been sealed twenty-eight years.
Adrian opened it inside the chapel.
ADRIAN.
IF YOU EVER READ THIS, I FAILED TO COME HOME.
His hands tightened.
Lucia sat beside Elena.
Michael remained across the aisle.
Adrian read.
YOU WERE FOUR WHEN I LEFT.
ELENA WAS SEVEN.
I TOLD MYSELF I WAS LEAVING TO SAVE YOU BOTH.
I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT CHILDREN CAN SURVIVE DANGER AND STILL BE BROKEN BY SILENCE.
Adrian stopped.
Elena looked at him.
He continued.
YOUR FATHER LOVED YOU.
HE ALSO LOVED HIS REPUTATION.
VICTOR LOVED ELENA.
HE ALSO LOVED CONTROL.
I LOVED BOTH OF YOU.
I ALSO CHOSE FEAR.
No one moved.
Adrian looked at Lucia.
She was crying.
He read the final lines.
IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN, DO NOT LET ME ASK FOR FORGIVENESS BEFORE I GIVE YOU THE TRUTH.
I AM YOUR MOTHER.
THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME INNOCENT.
Adrian folded the letter.
"Did you know Dad was stealing before you left?"
Lucia nodded.
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Months."
"Did you report him?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I was afraid he would go to prison."
Adrian laughed softly.
"So you protected him."
"Yes."
"And then he protected himself."
"Yes."
Elena whispered:
"And Victor protected me."
Lucia looked at her.
"Yes."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"He loved me."
She took a breath.
"But he also kept me."
Lucia nodded.
"Yes."
Elena continued:
"I can love him and still call that wrong."
Adrian looked at his sister.
That sentence settled something.
Alessandra stood near the chapel doors.
Adrian walked toward her.
She looked at him.
"Are you ending the engagement?"
He did not answer immediately.
Then:
"I don't know."
She nodded.
"Fair."
He continued:
"You knew my mother was alive."
"Yes."
"You knew Elena was my sister."
"Yes."
"You knew Daniel wanted the letters."
"Yes."
"And you still planned to marry me before telling me."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"My father said if you knew before the wedding, you would think our relationship was built around the trust."
Adrian stared.
"Was it?"
"No."
"Did he arrange our first meeting?"
Silence.
Adrian's expression changed.
"He did."
Alessandra nodded.
"Yes."
"When did you learn?"
"Two years ago."
"And you stayed."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because by then I loved you."
Adrian looked away.
Alessandra continued:
"I should have told you."
"Yes."
"I should have told Elena."
"Yes."
"I should have told you about Lucia."
"Yes."
She cried.
"I kept choosing the next day."
Adrian looked back.
"That is how families lose decades."
She nodded.
"I know."
He took the engagement ring from her hand.
Slowly.
No anger.
No audience.
Alessandra cried harder.
Adrian placed it in her palm.
"The engagement is over."
She closed her eyes.
He continued:
"That does not mean I hate you."
She looked up.
"It means I don't know which part of us was ours."
Her voice broke.
"I understand."
Later that afternoon, investigators arrived.
Boxes were cataloged.
Copies made.
Accounts frozen.
Daniel remained in custody.
Father Thomas gave a full statement.
Michael did too.
Lucia too.
No family immunity.
No secret deal.
Adrian insisted.
Michael looked at him.
"You may lose money."
Adrian shrugged.
"It was never mine."
"You may lose businesses."
"Then I lose them."
Michael's eyes filled.
"You are better than me."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"I just got the warning earlier."
That evening, Elena stood outside the chapel.
Adrian joined her.
"What happens now?"
"To what?"
"Us."
He smiled slightly.
"Breakfast tomorrow."
She looked at him.
"That's it?"
"Then lunch another day."
Elena laughed through tears.
"No grand promise?"
"No."
"No instant sibling bond?"
"No."
She nodded.
"Good."
May you like
Then she hugged him.
This time he hugged her back immediately.
