Chapter 9 - The Name Elena Chose to Keep

Three months later, the investigations had spread across three countries.

Saint Gabriel Relief was frozen.

Daniel Santoro was charged with fraud, obstruction, attempted extortion, and conspiracy.

Father Thomas resigned from active ministry.

Not because anyone forced him.

Because he said confession without consequence was performance.

Michael Bell returned to the United States voluntarily.

He admitted financial crimes.

His age and cooperation mattered.

But not enough to erase them.

Adrian did not interfere.

Victor Morel also testified.

He admitted blackmailing Michael.

Creating shell companies.

Keeping Elena after Michael asked for her back.

Elena visited him once.

Victor sat across from her.

"You are my daughter."

She looked at him.

"I was your daughter."

His face broke.

She continued:

"And Adrian's sister."

Victor nodded.

"I know."

Elena said:

"You loved me."

"Yes."

"You also decided love gave you ownership."

Victor closed his eyes.

"Yes."

She cried.

"So I need distance."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

Victor nodded.

Before leaving, he asked:

"Will you change your name?"

"To Bell?"

He nodded.

She thought.

Then shook her head.

"No."

Victor seemed surprised.

"Morel is the name I grew up with."

He looked hopeful.

She stopped him.

"But I am not keeping it for you."

His face changed.

"I'm keeping it because it is mine now."

She walked out.

Adrian waited outside.

He asked nothing.

She said:

"I'm still Elena Morel."

He smiled.

"Good."

"You're not offended?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I just found you."

He opened the car door.

"I'm not wasting time arguing about stationery."

She laughed.

Lucia stayed in Mexico for the first month.

Then came north.

Not to Adrian's mansion.

She rented a small house.

Adrian offered something larger.

She refused.

"I want one home no man hid me in."

He understood.

They met twice a week.

Sometimes Elena came.

Sometimes Michael.

Those dinners were harder.

Michael was awaiting sentencing.

Lucia still loved him.

Adrian did not understand that.

Then Elena said:

"Love doesn't become false just because someone did something terrible."

Adrian looked at her.

"Where did you learn that?"

She smiled sadly.

"Victor."

That silenced him.

Alessandra moved out of the Morel estate.

She took no trust money.

She gave investigators every letter Helen left.

The frozen accounts were transferred into an independent restitution fund.

Food programs.

Clinics.

Shelters.

Adrian refused to put his name on anything.

So did Elena.

One evening, Alessandra came to the Bell estate.

No red gown.

No ring.

She placed a folder on the library table.

"What is it?"

"Every communication I had with Daniel."

"Investigators already have copies."

"These are personal."

He opened them.

Messages.

Threats.

One message stood out.

MARRY HIM BEFORE THE TRUST REVIEW.

Adrian looked up.

Alessandra said:

"That was six months ago."

"You never told me."

"No."

"Did you move the wedding because of him?"

"We never had a date."

"I know."

She continued:

"My father wanted one."

"But you didn't."

"No."

That mattered.

Not enough.

But something.

Alessandra said:

"I didn't come to ask you back."

"Why did you come?"

"Because I finally understand what your mother meant."

Adrian waited.

"The men who separated your family kept deciding what everyone could survive."

Adrian nodded.

"I did the same thing."

She looked at him.

"I decided you couldn't survive the truth about me."

She pushed the folder toward him.

"So this is the last thing I was hiding."

Adrian closed it.

"Thank you."

Then she left.

No kiss.

No promise.

That night, Adrian's phone rang.

Elena.

"Adrian."

"What?"

"Mom found something."

His stomach tightened.

"What now?"

"A baptism certificate."

He almost laughed.

"Another sibling?"

Elena laughed too.

"No."

Then her voice changed.

"It's yours."

Adrian frowned.

"I already saw mine."

"No."

May you like

She whispered:

"This one has a different father's name."
