Chapter 4 - The Basement That Wasn’t Demolished

The old clinic sat under a condemned medical building across town.
The upper floors had been gutted.
The basement had not.
Dr. Grant had kept the only key.
Marco noticed.
“You planned for this.”
Grant shook his head.
“I hoped I’d never need it.”
Marco laughed without humor.
“That seems to be everyone’s plan.”
We went down.
Marco.
Vanessa.
Robert.
Grant.
And me.
Daniel remained at the hospital.
Surgery scheduled for 4:30 a.m.
Less than three hours.
The basement smelled like dust and bleach.
Grant opened archive room B.
Inside:
Metal shelves.
Paper files.
Old films.
Locked cabinet.
He opened it.
Three folders.
RINALDI, DANIEL.
BELL, ELENA.
RINALDI, MARCO.
Marco stared.
“My file.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grant looked ashamed.
“Because Peter created it.”
Marco opened it.
Blood tests.
Hospital visits.
School physicals.
Medication histories.
Everything.
“What is this?”
Robert whispered:
“Monitoring.”
Marco looked at him.
“Monitoring what?”
Grant answered.
“Your heart.”
Marco frowned.
“My heart is fine.”
“Yes.”
“Then why seventeen years of records?”
Grant looked at Vanessa.
She understood first.
“The bullet.”
Marco turned.
Grant nodded.
“Your father’s bullet was never removed.”
“So?”
“Peter believed a similar vascular weakness might be hereditary.”
Marco stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“No.”
Grant looked down.
“It was an excuse.”
“For what?”
“To collect your blood.”
Silence.
Marco stared.
“Why did my uncle want my blood?”
Robert sat down.
Grant opened another report.
Genetic analysis.
Marco.
Daniel.
Probability of biological relationship:
99.99%.
Marco looked confused.
“You tested paternity.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grant said:
“Because your uncle claimed Daniel wasn’t your father.”
Daniel had been the eldest brother.
Marco the heir.
If paternity was challenged—
Ownership shifted.
Marco understood.
“This was about inheritance.”
Robert nodded.
“Your uncle needed a reason to control the family trust.”
Marco stared at the report.
“He knew I was Daniel’s son.”
“Yes.”
“Then why keep testing?”
Grant answered:
“Because he wanted a result that said otherwise.”
Silence.
Vanessa whispered:
“He wanted you to falsify it.”
Grant nodded.
“I refused.”
“What happened?”
“He threatened Elena.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“My mother.”
“Yes.”
Grant continued.
“She had already copied financial records.”
“He knew.”
“So he used her.”
Robert closed his eyes.
Marco looked at him.
“And you let him.”
Robert whispered:
“I was scared.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
Marco turned back to the cabinet.
“What else?”
Grant opened Daniel’s file.
Inside was a surgical report from seventeen years ago.
Bullet trajectory.
Photographs.
And a police evidence tag.
Marco frowned.
“Evidence tag?”
Grant nodded.
“The bullet was never removed.”
“So what evidence?”
Grant handed him a sealed bag.
A deformed bullet fragment.
Marco stared.
“That came from Dad?”
“No.”
“Then from who?”
Grant looked at Robert.
Robert’s face went pale.
Marco noticed.
“Who was shot that night besides my father?”
Silence.
Robert finally answered.
“Your uncle.”
Marco stared.
“What?”
Grant continued.
“Daniel fired back.”
“The bullet grazed his brother.”
“Fragment lodged in his shoulder.”
Marco’s expression changed.
“So my uncle was treated too.”
“Yes.”
“Here?”
“Yes.”
“By you?”
Grant nodded.
“Same night.”
Marco laughed quietly.
“Two brothers.”
“One clinic.”
“One shooting.”
Grant handed him the ballistic report.
Both bullets.
Same weapon?
No.
Daniel was shot with a .38.
His uncle was hit with a 9mm.
Marco stared.
“Different guns.”
“Yes.”
Daniel had told everyone his brother shot first.
Marco frowned.
“Who fired the 9mm?”
Grant looked toward Robert.
Robert whispered:
“I did.”
Vanessa stared at her father.
“You shot Marco’s uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He was aiming at Daniel again.”
Marco stared.
“You saved my father.”
Robert nodded.
“After helping create the situation.”
Marco looked at him.
“Conveniently complicated.”
Robert accepted it.
Grant continued.
“There’s one more report.”
He pulled out a police intake form.
Warehouse shooting.
Witness statement.
Signed by—
VANESSA BELL.
Vanessa froze.
“That’s impossible.”
She looked at the date.
Seventeen years earlier.
She would have been sixteen.
Marco stared.
“Your signature.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I wasn’t there.”
Robert went pale.
Marco looked at him.
“You forged her name.”
Robert whispered:
“No.”
Grant stared at the form.
Then realized.
“That isn’t Vanessa.”
Marco frowned.
Grant pointed to the middle name.
VANESSA MARIE BELL.
Vanessa looked confused.
“My middle name is Rose.”
Silence.
Robert sat down.
Marco looked at him.
“Who is Vanessa Marie Bell?”
May you like
Robert covered his face.
“My sister.”
