THE BULLET THAT NEVER LEFT / Chapter 5 / 9

Chapter 6 - The Wrong Brother Was Shot

Marco stared.

“What?”

Robert sat down.

“The warehouse meeting was supposed to expose your uncle.”

“Yes.”

“But Daniel wasn’t the target.”

“Then who was?”

Robert looked at himself.

“Me.”

Silence.

Vanessa stared.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted out.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

“You were helping his uncle steal.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I copied records.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against who?”

“Everyone.”

Marco laughed bitterly.

Robert continued.

“Your uncle found out.”

“He arranged the warehouse meeting.”

“Daniel thought it was about the accounts.”

“It wasn’t.”

Marco understood.

“He planned to kill you.”

“Yes.”

“Then my father walked in.”

“Yes.”

“And took the bullet.”

Robert nodded.

“Your uncle fired at me.”

“Daniel moved.”

“The bullet hit him.”

Marco closed his eyes.

His father spent seventeen years with a bullet meant for Robert Bell.

Vanessa looked sick.

“My father.”

Robert whispered:

“Yes.”

Marco looked at him.

“Then you shot back.”

“Yes.”

“Hit my uncle.”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa Marie saw everything.”

“Yes.”

“Why did Dad disappear after?”

“Because your uncle threatened to blame the entire scheme on you.”

“We know that.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

“There was more.”

Marco stared.

Robert continued.

“He said if Daniel returned, he would kill the only witness.”

“Vanessa Marie.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“So Daniel hid her too.”

“Yes.”

“And then hid himself.”

“Yes.”

Marco sat down.

His father had vanished not only for Marco.

For a witness.

For a woman Marco had never heard of.

Vanessa whispered:

“Why Vermont?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because she had family there.”

“Our family?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

Robert looked at Marco.

“Daniel’s.”

Silence.

Marco frowned.

“My father had family in Vermont?”

Robert nodded.

“A sister.”

Marco stared.

“My aunt.”

“Yes.”

“She hid Vanessa Marie.”

“Yes.”

Marco laughed in disbelief.

“Another aunt.”

Robert looked ashamed.

“Your family was bigger than your uncle wanted you to know.”

The operating room doors opened.

Grant stepped out.

Blood on his gown.

Marco stood.

“How is he?”

Grant removed his mask.

“The bullet is out.”

Marco froze.

Seventeen years.

Gone.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Marco closed his eyes.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

This time he did not pull away.

Grant held up a sealed surgical container.

Inside.

The bullet.

Small.

Dark.

Real.

Marco stared.

“The thing that started all this.”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

“It’s the thing that survived it.”

Marco looked at him.

Grant continued.

“Your father wants to see you when he wakes.”

“Good.”

“And he asked for Robert.”

Marco’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Grant looked toward Robert.

“He said Robert has something that belongs to him.”

Robert went pale.

Marco noticed.

“What?”

Robert reached into his coat.

A small key.

Old.

Brass.

Daniel’s initials.

Marco stared.

“What is it?”

Robert whispered:

“A safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“Vermont.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“The same place.”

Robert nodded.

Marco looked at the operating room.

Then at the key.

“What’s inside?”

May you like

Robert whispered:

“The reason Daniel never came home.”
