Chapter 2 - The Login That Should Not Exist

Nobody moved for three seconds.
Then Luca held out his hand.
“Show me.”
Dante turned the phone toward him.
The security log was simple.
Too simple.
Seven months earlier, at 2:14 a.m., Vittorio Moretti’s executive credentials had been used to create an administrator rule inside Moretti Holdings.
The rule redirected every message containing Emma Moretti’s private address, phone number, or name.
Not deleted.
Redirected.
To a hidden archive.
Luca’s voice lowered.
“Where was the login made?”
Dante scrolled.
His expression changed again.
“Inside headquarters.”
Emma felt cold.
“Someone was in your office?”
“No.”
Dante shook his head.
“Not Luca’s office.”
He zoomed in.
“Executive archive. Seventh floor.”
Belini looked away.
Luca saw it.
“Why?”
She folded her arms.
“I have no idea what you’re asking.”
“You recognized the location.”
“I recognized the building.”
“That isn’t what I said.”
The lobby had become painfully quiet.
Emma’s hand remained on her stomach.
Their son moved again.
Luca noticed, but this time he did not look away from Belini.
“Who still had access to my father’s archive?”
Dante answered carefully.
“Three people after Vittorio died.”
“Names.”
“You. Me.”
He paused.
“And Carlo DeLuca.”
Emma had heard the name.
Everyone in New York finance had.
Carlo DeLuca had been Vittorio Moretti’s attorney, trustee, and adviser for more than thirty years.
He had also handled the legal restructuring after Vittorio’s death.
Luca stared at Dante.
“Call him.”
Dante did.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
Belini gave a small laugh.
“This is becoming ridiculous.”
Luca turned.
“Then help me make it less ridiculous.”
“How?”
“Tell me why Carlo called you twelve times the week Emma disappeared.”
Belini’s face went still.
Dante had already found the records.
Emma felt something inside her harden.
“You knew him.”
“Everyone knew Carlo.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Belini looked at Luca.
“He advised both families.”
“About what?”
She hesitated.
That was enough.
Luca stepped closer.
“The alliance?”
Belini’s jaw tightened.
Emma looked between them.
“What alliance?”
No one answered immediately.
Then Dante’s phone vibrated.
He read the message.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“The seventh-floor camera archive still exists.”
Luca’s eyes sharpened.
“Pull the night the rule was created.”
Dante opened the footage.
A dark corridor appeared.
2:11 a.m.
One man entered frame.
Gray hair.
Long black coat.
A leather briefcase.
Emma had never seen him.
Luca had.
“Carlo.”
Then a second figure appeared behind him.
A woman.
Red coat.
Belini stopped breathing.
Emma looked at her.
May you like
Luca did too.
The camera showed Belini entering Vittorio Moretti’s sealed archive three minutes before his dead credentials came back to life.
