Chapter 5 - The Agreement Beneath Vittorio’s Name

Moretti headquarters was twenty minutes away.

Luca made it in twelve.

Emma rode beside him.

Belini came too.

Not because Luca trusted her.

Because he did not.

The elevator opened on the seventh floor.

Carlo DeLuca was standing outside Vittorio’s archive with a document box in his hands.

He looked older than Emma remembered.

But the silver ring was the same.

So was his voice.

“Mrs. Moretti.”

Emma stopped.

Eight months disappeared.

“You told me he wanted me gone.”

Carlo looked at Luca.

“I can explain.”

Luca walked toward him.

“Start with why my dead father’s credentials are still being used.”

Carlo set the box down carefully.

“Because your father left unfinished obligations.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only answer that matters.”

Dante opened the archive door.

Inside were shelves of sealed files.

One cabinet stood open.

Several folders were missing.

Luca looked at Carlo.

“What were you taking?”

“Documents that should never become public.”

Belini whispered, “Carlo.”

He turned sharply.

“Be quiet.”

That surprised everyone.

Including Belini.

Luca noticed.

“She doesn’t control you.”

Carlo gave a tired smile.

“No.”

“Then who does?”

“Your father did.”

The room went still.

Carlo opened the box.

Inside lay an agreement signed four years before Vittorio’s death.

MORETTI-VESCARI CONTINUITY AGREEMENT.

Emma read only enough to understand the shape of it.

Corporate voting rights.

Debt guarantees.

Marriage provisions.

Succession.

Then Luca found the clause.

His face changed.

“If I died without a recognized heir, voting control transferred temporarily to the Vescari trust.”

Carlo nodded.

“And if you married a Vescari daughter, the transfer became permanent through consolidation.”

Emma looked at Belini.

Her face had gone pale.

Luca continued reading.

“If I had a legally recognized child before the marriage, the entire succession provision became void.”

Silence.

Then Emma understood.

Their son had not merely complicated a wedding.

He had destroyed a financial structure worth billions.

Luca looked at Carlo.

“So you erased my wife to protect this.”

“I protected the company.”

“You fabricated the death of my child.”

“I prevented a succession crisis.”

Emma’s voice cut through the room.

“You told a pregnant woman her husband wanted nothing to do with her.”

Carlo finally looked ashamed.

Only for a second.

Then he recovered.

“Mrs. Moretti, you were collateral damage in a problem created before you ever met Luca.”

Luca moved so quickly Dante stepped between them.

Not to protect Carlo.

To protect Luca from what he might do.

Luca stopped.

Barely.

“Say that again.”

Carlo did not.

Belini spoke from behind them.

“He was supposed to make her leave quietly.”

Emma turned.

Luca did too.

Belini realized what she had admitted.

Carlo closed his eyes.

There it was.

Not suspicion.

Not inference.

Proof.

Luca looked at his fiancée.

“You knew.”

Belini’s voice cracked.

“I knew about the agreement.”

“How much else?”

She did not answer.

Carlo did.

“Enough.”

Belini stared at him.

“You promised—”

“No,” Carlo said. “Your father promised.”

Luca’s eyes sharpened.

“Vincent Vescari.”

Carlo looked away.

May you like

That was the first time Emma understood the conspiracy had never belonged to one family.

It had required two.
