Chapter 4 - The Doctor With No Office

Luca ordered the resort manager to close the west lobby.
No guests.
No staff except security.
No one left.
Belini hated that.
Emma could see it.
Control had always been Belini’s strongest weapon.
Now the room belonged to Luca.
Dante placed three phones on the marble table near the orchids.
“The call telling Luca about the miscarriage came from a Manhattan medical exchange.”
Emma frowned.
“My clinic never used one.”
“I know.”
Dante tapped the screen.
“The number was leased for seventy-two hours.”
“To whom?” Luca asked.
“A shell company.”
Belini looked bored.
Too bored.
Emma noticed.
“So did she.”
Belini’s eyes moved toward her.
“What?”
“You know this part.”
“I don’t.”
Emma stepped closer.
“You knew the baby was a boy.”
“That proves nothing.”
“It proves someone gave you information before I told anyone.”
Luca said nothing.
He did not need to.
Dante continued.
“The shell company was Salvatore Medical Consulting.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“Dr. Salvatore.”
Emma shook her head.
“There was no Dr. Salvatore.”
“No licensed physician in New York under that name connected to your clinic,” Dante said.
Luca looked at him.
“Who formed the company?”
Dante turned another screen.
“DeLuca Legal Services.”
Belini closed her eyes for half a second.
Emma saw.
Again.
Every answer led back to Carlo.
But not only Carlo.
“Play the call,” Luca said.
Dante hesitated.
“We only have Luca’s office recording.”
“Play it.”
A man’s voice filled the silent lobby.
Professional.
Calm.
Regretful.
“Mr. Moretti, I’m sorry. Your wife experienced severe complications. There was significant bleeding. The pregnancy could not be saved.”
Emma’s face went empty.
Luca stopped breathing.
Their son kicked beneath her hand.
Alive.
The voice continued.
“We recommend giving Mrs. Moretti space. She has asked not to be contacted.”
Emma whispered, “I never said that.”
Luca’s eyes closed once.
Then opened.
“Identify the voice.”
Dante sent the audio.
The answer came faster than expected.
Not a doctor.
Not even close.
The voice belonged to Peter Vale, a former radio announcer who recorded corporate training material.
He had been paid for a “private legal reenactment.”
By DeLuca Legal Services.
Emma stared at the floor.
Months of grief.
Months of believing Luca had rejected her.
Months of hiding in a resort room under another name.
Built from a stranger reading a script.
Luca looked at Belini.
“Did you write it?”
“No.”
“Did you hear it before tonight?”
“No.”
Emma watched her.
Then remembered.
At the clinic.
Belini sitting beside the window.
A red handbag on her lap.
Her phone lighting up.
A document open briefly on the screen.
Three words she had noticed without understanding.
SEVERE COMPLICATIONS CONFIRMED.
Emma’s head lifted.
“You showed me that sentence.”
Belini froze.
“What?”
“At the clinic.”
Emma’s voice shook.
“You showed me a message saying there were complications.”
Belini stepped back.
“That could have been anything.”
“No.”
Emma remembered now.
The exact phrase.
The same phrase the fake doctor had used.
Luca’s voice became very quiet.
“You saw the script.”
Belini said nothing.
Dante’s phone vibrated.
He read.
Then looked up.
“Carlo just entered Moretti headquarters.”
Luca reached for his jacket.
Belini whispered, “Don’t go there.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Emma felt the air change.
Luca asked one question.
“Why not?”
Belini looked frightened.
May you like
Not for herself.
For what Carlo might destroy before they arrived.
