Chapter 4 - What Bianca’s Father Hid in the Bank

Samuel placed a second folder on the table.

Bank audits.

Account numbers.

Internal memos.

Adrian read the first page.

VALE PRIVATE BANK.

Restricted review.

Russo accounts.

He looked at Samuel.

“You worked there.”

“For thirty-eight years.”

“You saw these.”

“Yes.”

“Why wait until tonight?”

Samuel looked at Adrian’s mother.

“Because she asked me to.”

Adrian turned.

His mother nodded.

“I wanted both of us here before you saw everything.”

Adrian looked back at the file.

One account repeated.

902-VALE-RUSSO.

He frowned.

“Same number as the box.”

Samuel nodded.

“Intentional.”

“What was it?”

“A holding account.”

“For what?”

Samuel hesitated.

Adrian’s father answered.

“Blackmail.”

Silence.

Adrian stared.

“Whose?”

“Your grandfather’s.”

His father continued.

“Giovanni kept evidence on people.”

“Judges.”

“Politicians.”

“Police.”

“Bankers.”

Adrian looked at the file.

“And Mr. Vale held the money connected to it.”

“Yes.”

Samuel nodded.

“Some willingly.”

“Some under pressure.”

Adrian’s mother looked at him.

“I found out when you were nine.”

Adrian froze.

“You were still home.”

“Yes.”

“That is why you wanted to leave.”

“Yes.”

“With me.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“So my grandfather faked your death because you knew where the money came from.”

“Partly.”

“Partly?”

She looked at his father.

His father said:

“She also knew something about me.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What?”

His father looked ashamed.

“I had worked for Giovanni.”

“Doing what?”

No answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Doing what?”

His father finally said:

“Collections.”

Adrian stared.

“Threats?”

“Yes.”

“Violence?”

His father looked down.

“Sometimes.”

Silence.

Adrian’s mother closed her eyes.

Adrian laughed quietly.

“So you helped the man who later stole my mother from us.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

“And she still found you.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?”

His mother answered:

“Because people can do terrible things and still tell one truth that matters.”

Adrian looked back at his father.

“What truth?”

She said:

“He was the first person who admitted your grandfather was lying about me.”

Samuel opened another document.

A notarized statement.

Signed eleven years earlier.

Adrian’s father had written:

ELENA RUSSO WAS NEVER MENTALLY UNSTABLE.

GIOVANNI RUSSO FABRICATED HER MEDICAL HISTORY.

Adrian stared.

His father whispered:

“I wrote that the night I disappeared.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I might not come back.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Did you expect Giovanni to kill you?”

His father did not answer immediately.

May you like

Then:

“Yes.”
