Chapter 9 - The Empty Chair Finally Filled

The next morning, Adrian returned to suite 902.
No tuxedo.
No gala.
No contract.
Just coffee.
His mother sat at the table.
His father by the window.
One empty chair between them.
The same chair from the birthday photograph.
Adrian looked at it.
His mother smiled sadly.
“We kept doing that.”
“Leaving a chair.”
“Yes.”
“Every birthday?”
“Every year.”
His throat tightened.
He sat.
For the first time, the chair was not empty.
Nobody spoke for a while.
Then Adrian asked his mother:
“What was your name while you were gone?”
“Maria Reed.”
“Did you like it?”
She thought.
“No.”
“Why keep it?”
“Because Elena Russo was supposed to be dead.”
Adrian looked at his father.
“And you?”
“Daniel Cross.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“You both picked terrible names.”
His father laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one Adrian had heard.
It hurt.
Because it sounded familiar.
Adrian looked at them.
“Why didn’t either of you ignore everyone and come back?”
His mother answered first.
“Fear.”
His father answered second.
“Guilt.”
Adrian nodded.
No dramatic forgiveness.
No easy reunion.
Just truth.
Later that afternoon, federal investigators arrived.
Samuel gave them the files.
Bianca’s father surrendered his banking records.
Adrian’s father gave a statement.
His mother did too.
The old trust was frozen.
The acquisition collapsed.
The engagement announcement disappeared from every screen in the ballroom.
Bianca came to suite 902 that evening.
She stood outside.
Adrian opened the door.
She looked at the table.
At his parents.
At the chair.
Then at him.
“I won’t come in unless you want me to.”
Adrian looked at her for a long time.
Then stepped aside.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But choice.
Bianca entered.
His mother looked at her.
“You told me he had moved on.”
Bianca’s face crumpled.
“I know.”
“Was that true?”
“No.”
“Why say it?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Elena nodded.
“Fear makes people cruel when they call it protection.”
Bianca began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena answered:
“I know.”
Adrian’s father looked at Adrian.
Then at Bianca.
“Do you still love her?”
Adrian did not answer quickly.
“Yes.”
Bianca looked up.
Adrian continued.
“But love is no longer enough for me to ignore what someone hides.”
May you like
She nodded.
“It shouldn’t be.”
