Chapter 6 - The Shot Samuel Never Reported

Adrian turned toward Samuel.
“Who fired?”
Samuel removed his glasses.
“Mr. Vale.”
Silence.
Adrian stared.
“Bianca’s father shot my grandfather.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Samuel looked toward the door.
“Because Giovanni reached for a gun.”
Adrian’s father shook his head.
“That is what Vale said.”
Samuel nodded.
“You never saw it.”
“No.”
Adrian asked:
“Was Giovanni armed?”
Samuel opened another envelope.
Police evidence photograph.
A revolver on the warehouse floor.
Registered to Giovanni Russo.
Adrian stared.
“So Mr. Vale shot in self-defense.”
Samuel did not answer.
Adrian noticed.
“What?”
Samuel said:
“The gun had no usable prints.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
“And Giovanni always wore gloves in winter.”
His father added:
“But it was June.”
Silence.
Adrian looked at Samuel.
“You think the gun was planted.”
“Yes.”
“By Mr. Vale.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Why would he shoot Giovanni?”
Samuel answered:
“Because Giovanni had evidence against him too.”
Adrian laughed once.
“Everyone had evidence on everyone.”
“That was how the system worked.”
His mother said it quietly.
Adrian looked at the files.
“So after the shooting?”
His father continued.
“Giovanni survived.”
“Barely.”
“Mr. Vale told me to disappear.”
“Why?”
“He said if I stayed, Giovanni would blame me.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
Adrian frowned.
“Did Giovanni ever know who actually shot him?”
His father shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Samuel interrupted.
“He did.”
Everyone looked at him.
“How?”
“Two months before he died, Giovanni requested box 902.”
Adrian’s mother froze.
“What?”
Samuel nodded.
“He opened it.”
“Alone?”
“No.”
“With whom?”
Samuel looked at Adrian.
“Bianca.”
Silence.
Adrian stopped breathing.
“Bianca met my grandfather.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Four years ago.”
Adrian stared.
“She never told me.”
“No.”
“Why would she meet him?”
Samuel’s face tightened.
“Because he called her.”
Adrian’s father frowned.
“For what?”
Samuel answered:
“To give her a message for Adrian.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What message?”
Samuel opened the final bank envelope.
Inside was one letter.
Adrian’s name.
His grandfather’s handwriting.
Adrian unfolded it.
