Chapter 5 - Isabella Had Left One Warning

Matteo Vescari did not answer his phone.
His apartment was empty.
His office computer was gone.
But he had made one mistake.
He left an old storage box in Belini’s foundation archive.
Emma found it.
Not Marco.
Not Luca.
Emma.
Because everyone else was searching for financial records.
Emma noticed the box was labeled with household photographs.
It did not belong in an accounting room.
Inside were pictures from Madrid.
Teresa.
Isabella.
Young Luca.
And one picture of Carmen walking away from the café.
Taken from across the street.
Luca stared at it.
“Someone followed us.”
Carmen sat down.
“I never knew.”
Beneath the photographs was a cassette tape.
Old.
Cracked plastic.
Isabella’s handwriting on the label.
Belini recognized it.
“My mother.”
Luca found an old player in the estate archive.
They listened together.
Isabella’s voice was young.
Frightened.
“Teresa, if you hear this, my father knows.”
Belini closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“He knows you copied the accounts. He knows you left New York with Luca.”
A pause.
“I gave him your security code.”
Carmen whispered:
“Oh, God.”
Isabella began crying on the tape.
“I thought he only wanted to know whether you came home.”
Belini’s face changed.
Her mother had been the leak.
Not willingly.
Not completely.
But enough.
The message continued.
“Do not come back through the main house. Do not trust the chapel guards. And do not trust anyone carrying our name until my father is gone.”
Luca looked at Belini.
The sentence from Teresa’s note suddenly made sense.
Teresa had not been warning him that every Bellini descendant was evil.
She had been repeating the survival rule Isabella herself had given her.
Belini opened her eyes.
“My mother tried to warn her.”
“Yes,” Luca said.
“And failed.”
“Yes.”
Belini looked at Carmen.
“My grandfather ruined them.”
Carmen shook her head.
“He frightened Teresa.”
Then she looked at Belini.
“What you did today was yours.”
Belini went still.
Carmen’s voice remained gentle.
“That part does not belong to your grandfather.”
Emma saw the words land.
Belini had inherited a secret.
She had also chosen what to do with it.
Marco entered.
“We found Vescari.”
Luca stood.
“Where?”
“JFK.”
“Leaving?”
“Yes.”
“For Madrid.”
Belini whispered:
“He’s going after the rest.”
Luca turned.
“What rest?”
May you like
She looked toward Isabella’s tape.
“My mother kept a second archive.”
