Chapter 8 - Luca Chose the Truth Over the Name

The Moretti attorneys arrived before dawn.

Not the two who had canceled.

Different attorneys.

Independent ones.

Luca put the ledger in front of them.

Marco added Vescari’s records.

The restored security logs.

The marriage agreement.

Belini’s investigator payments.

Everything.

One attorney looked at Luca.

“If this becomes public, it opens historical exposure for both families.”

“I know.”

“Your father’s settlement was private.”

“I know.”

“Some Moretti companies benefited from returned funds without reporting the origin.”

“I know.”

Belini watched him.

“You’re really going to release it.”

Luca looked at her.

“My mother spent twenty-six years trying to make sure the truth survived.”

“She also tried to protect you.”

“From lies?”

Belini flinched.

“No.”

Luca’s voice remained calm.

“She protected me from people who believed my name mattered more than what happened.”

Carmen sat beside Emma.

The old woman looked exhausted.

Luca turned to her.

“You carried this because my mother asked.”

“Yes.”

“You owed her nothing.”

Carmen smiled faintly.

“Neither did the person who once paid for Emma’s mother.”

Emma looked at her.

The strange circle returned.

A stranger helped Teresa’s son.

A stranger helped Emma.

Emma helped Carmen.

None of them knew what the act would become later.

Luca looked back at the lawyers.

“Disclose the ledger.”

Belini stood.

“Luca.”

He looked at her.

“What happens to me?”

Not the foundation.

Not the money.

Me.

Luca answered carefully.

“You cooperated after you were caught.”

Her face tightened.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I know.”

She removed her engagement ring.

For a second, Emma expected anger.

Belini only looked tired.

“I did love you.”

Luca’s expression barely changed.

“I believe you.”

That hurt her more.

“But?”

“You loved me and still decided I had no right to know why you entered my life.”

Belini placed the ring on the table.

Vescari was taken away first.

Belini remained long enough to sign a statement confirming she had activated Teresa’s archived security credential.

That solved the question Marco had asked at the restaurant.

The dead woman had not opened the archive.

Belini had used the copy Isabella left behind.

But one question remained.

Why had Teresa told Carmen never to bring the key to the Moretti family if Vittorio eventually believed her?

Carmen answered.

“She didn’t know that yet.”

Luca looked at her.

“What?”

“The day she gave me the key was before your father found the proof.”

The warning belonged to the worst week of Teresa’s life.

Not the rest of it.

And Luca had spent twenty-six years remembering that week as if it were the whole story.
