Chapter 6 - Belini Finally Explained the Engagement

Matteo Vescari never reached Madrid.

Marco’s people stopped him before boarding.

He carried no weapon.

Only documents.

One of them was a copy of Luca and Belini’s proposed marriage agreement.

Luca read it once.

Then again.

Emma watched the temperature in the room change.

“What?” Belini asked.

Luca slid the document across the table.

“You tell me.”

She read.

Her face drained.

Buried inside the property language was a consolidation clause.

If Bellini Foundation liabilities were ever linked to historic Moretti accounts after the marriage, Luca’s family trust would absorb certain losses automatically.

Millions.

Possibly more.

Belini looked at Vescari.

“You added this.”

He said nothing.

Luca asked:

“Did she know?”

Vescari smiled faintly.

“Not all of it.”

Belini’s head snapped toward him.

“All?”

There it was.

The part Luca had been waiting for.

Belini sat down.

“I approached you because of the ledger.”

Emma looked at her.

Luca remained silent.

Belini continued.

“Years ago I learned Teresa had evidence against my grandfather. I also learned the Moretti family never publicly exposed him.”

“Because?”

“Your father negotiated privately. Carlo returned part of the money. Both families buried it.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“And you thought the ledger could reopen everything.”

“Yes.”

“So you became my fiancée.”

Belini looked at him.

“At first.”

Emma felt the cruelty of those two words.

Not because they meant Belini had never cared.

Because they meant caring had come after deception.

Luca asked:

“What changed?”

Belini’s voice softened.

“You did.”

He showed no reaction.

She continued.

“I planned to find Carmen. Recover the key. Destroy the ledger. Then I convinced myself none of it mattered anymore.”

“But you hired Vescari.”

“Yes.”

“You tracked Carmen.”

“Yes.”

“You used my mother’s code.”

“Yes.”

“You unlocked the archive today.”

“Yes.”

Each answer made the room quieter.

Luca finally asked:

“Why today?”

Belini looked at Carmen.

“Because Matteo told me she had entered Bellori’s restaurant.”

Emma understood.

Carmen had not arrived there by chance.

Vescari had been following her.

But he had made another mistake.

He assumed Carmen would never spend the key.

Never reveal Teresa.

Never encounter Luca.

Emma’s four euros had broken twenty-six years of planning.

Vescari laughed softly.

Belini turned.

“What?”

“You still think this was about protecting your engagement.”

He looked at Luca.

“The ledger has one page she hasn’t seen.”

Luca opened it again.

The final pages were newer.

Added after Carlo Bellini’s death.

One signature appeared beneath a settlement transfer.

A signature Luca knew.

May you like

His father’s.

Vittorio Moretti.
