Chapter 5 - Belini Finally Told the Truth

Vittorio never reached the vault.

By the time Luca’s men covered the garage, the car was empty.

Engine warm.

Rear door open.

A distraction.

Inside the glove compartment, Marco found one red silk scarf.

Belini recognized it immediately.

“It is mine.”

Luca looked at her.

“Missing?”

“Since last week.”

Thomas gave a dry laugh.

“Your father has developed a taste for leaving your fingerprints on his work.”

Belini’s anger arrived fast.

Then fear replaced it.

Not fear of Luca.

Fear of understanding.

They returned to Judge Harper’s townhouse before dawn.

Emma sat at the dining table with Daniel’s ledger in front of her but did not read it.

She had heard her dead father’s voice threaten a man powerful enough to erase people.

That changed grief.

Grief had always been a closed door.

Now someone had opened it from the other side.

Belini stood by the window.

Still red.

Still immaculate.

No longer composed.

Luca remained across from her.

“Start seven years ago.”

She looked at Emma instead.

“I saw your father the week he died.”

Emma’s hands stopped moving.

“Where?”

“My father’s office.”

“Why were you there?”

“I had come back from school. I was supposed to be at a dinner. I heard shouting.”

“What did Daniel say?”

Belini swallowed.

“He told my father the accounts were copied. He said Alessio Moretti already had enough to destroy him.”

Luca’s expression did not move.

“And my father?”

“He was there.”

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

Belini nodded.

Thomas watched her carefully.

“What happened next?”

“My father told me to leave. I did.”

Emma stared.

“Then?”

“The next morning Daniel Carter was dead.”

“And you knew it was not an accident.”

“I suspected.”

“You said ‘that accident was investigated’ tonight before anyone told you how he died.”

Belini closed her eyes briefly.

“Yes.”

Emma’s voice hardened.

“You knew.”

“I knew my father had been furious with him. I knew he called someone after Daniel left. I knew two Bellini security cars disappeared from the garage for three hours.”

“That is knowing.”

Belini looked at her.

“I was afraid.”

Emma’s expression did not soften.

“So was my mother.”

Belini had no answer.

Luca asked, “Why did Vittorio tell you to keep Emma away from me tonight?”

“He said Daniel’s daughter was unstable. That she blamed him for her father’s death. That if she reached you, she would manipulate you with forged documents.”

“And you believed him?”

“At first.”

“Then why were you frightened when she mentioned your father?”

“Because I remembered Daniel.”

Emma leaned back.

“And the photographer?”

Belini shook her head.

“I did not authorize him.”

Marco placed a tablet on the table.

“Your corporate account did.”

“My father still has legacy access.”

“Prove it.”

Belini’s jaw tightened.

Then she opened her phone and handed it to him.

“Search the archived administrator logs.”

Marco did.

Three minutes later his expression changed.

“Boss.”

Luca looked.

A Bellini Holdings administrator credential had issued the photographer pass.

The credential belonged to Vittorio.

Not Belini.

Thomas smiled faintly.

“He gave me the pass without knowing it.”

Everyone turned.

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“I broke into an old Bellini vendor portal six months ago. The credential was still active. I used it because if security traced me, they would look at the Bellinis first.”

Belini stared at him.

“You used my father’s company to spy on my father?”

“I have hobbies.”

For the first time all night, Emma almost smiled.

It vanished when Marco found another file.

“Vittorio accessed Emma’s employment records eleven days ago.”

Emma looked up.

“What employment records?”

“Caregiver agency. Philadelphia.”

Her face went cold.

“That means he knew where I lived.”

“Yes.”

Judge Harper entered from the hallway.

“And that is why I sent the invitation.”

Emma stood.

“You knew he found me?”

“I knew someone had searched your sealed file using Bellini legal credentials.”

“You could have told me.”

“I could have told you to run.”

“You did.”

“And you would have spent two more years running alone.”

Emma looked toward Luca.

The truth irritated her because it was true.

Belini suddenly said, “There is another archive.”

Luca turned.

“What?”

“My father kept a private room beneath Bellini House. No staff. No cameras connected to the main system.”

Thomas’s expression sharpened.

“What is inside?”

“I never knew.”

“Why tell us now?” Emma asked.

Belini looked at her for a long moment.

“Because my father used me to frighten you tonight.”

Then she looked at Luca.

“And because if Daniel’s recording is real, he used me for seven years to help hide a murder.”

Luca picked up his coat.

“Address.”

Belini did not move.

“You already know it.”

Luca’s eyes cooled.

“Yes.”

May you like

She met them anyway.

“But you do not know the door is behind my mother’s portrait.”
