Chapter 8 - What Happened the Night Daniel Carter Died

The chapel had no congregation.
It had no priest.
It had one basement door behind the altar and fresh tire tracks outside.
Luca arrived before sunset.
Emma came with him.
He had stopped telling her to stay behind.
That did not mean he liked it.
Marco’s team entered through the side crypt.
Thomas remained outside with two men and a camera pointed at the road.
Belini came last.
When Luca saw her step from the car in a red coat, his expression hardened.
“I told you not to come.”
“My father has the judge.”
“That did not answer me.”
“No. It answered me.”
Emma looked between them.
“Can we argue after we find her?”
They did.
The basement was not a vault.
It was a server room.
Old equipment.
New drives.
Air-conditioning cold enough to make Emma shiver.
Marco found Judge Harper first.
She sat in a chair beside the main console.
Unhurt.
Furious.
“I am seventy-four years old,” she said as he freed her hands. “If they wanted cooperation, they should have offered coffee.”
Emma laughed from pure relief.
Then Luca saw the screen.
A deletion process was running.
Forty-three percent.
Marco moved to the keyboard.
Harper stopped him.
“Do not.”
“Why?”
“Adrian said the wrong command wipes the mirror copies.”
Luca looked around.
“Where are they?”
“Gone. Five minutes ago.”
Belini closed her eyes.
“My father runs when he thinks someone else will finish the damage.”
Harper pointed toward a second monitor.
“He left that for Emma.”
A video file.
Daniel Carter.
Older than the man in the gala photograph.
Tired.
Alive.
Emma sat down before her knees decided for her.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Emma, if you are seeing this before twenty-five, then I failed to keep you invisible.”
She pressed both hands together.
Nobody spoke.
“I am sorry,” Daniel continued. “You deserved a father, not a plan.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
Luca looked away just enough to give her privacy without leaving.
Daniel explained everything.
Vittorio had been stealing from Bellini Holdings and Moretti Maritime for years.
When losses became visible, Adrian Saye created false digital approvals using copied executive credentials.
Daniel discovered the pattern.
Alessio Moretti confirmed it.
Together they built an archive.
They placed it under Judge Harper’s legal control.
Then Daniel learned Vittorio was preparing to frame Alessio for the thefts and for two contract killings paid through the same accounts.
Daniel refused to destroy the evidence.
Vittorio threatened Emma.
That was the moment Daniel disappeared her from public records.
He moved her and her mother twice.
Changed schools.
Closed accounts.
Created debts that looked ordinary enough to explain why they lived quietly.
Emma whispered, “The debts were fake?”
Harper answered softly.
“Some. Not all.”
Onscreen, Daniel continued.
“The twenty-fifth birthday matters because the release becomes automatic. Before then, Emma and Luca can open it together if secrecy fails. Alessio insisted on Luca because Vittorio could forge documents, bribe trustees, and threaten lawyers. He could not easily control the one Moretti heir powerful enough to fight him.”
Luca looked at the screen.
For once, his father’s faith felt heavier than inheritance.
Then Daniel described the final night.
He met Vittorio beside the river.
Alessio came to protect him.
Adrian arrived with two Bellini security men.
Alessio was shot in the shoulder and taken away by his own guards.
Daniel escaped in his car.
Vittorio’s men followed.
The crash was not random.
A second vehicle forced Daniel through the barrier.
Emma stopped the video.
She could not breathe properly.
Luca crouched beside her chair.
He did not touch her.
“Take your time.”
She shook her head.
“No. I have spent seven years taking time.”
She pressed play.
Daniel’s final message was short.
“If I die, do not turn my daughter into a weapon. Do not turn her into a Moretti. Do not turn her into a Bellini. Give her the truth and let her decide what to do with it.”
The video ended.
Silence filled the server room.
Then Marco looked at the deletion screen.
Forty-nine percent.
“We can stop this now.”
Judge Harper nodded.
“With the two-key authorization.”
Emma understood.
“Mine and Luca’s.”
“Yes.”
Luca looked at her.
“This is your decision.”
“No.”
She stood.
“It is ours. That was the point.”
They entered both credentials.
The deletion froze.
Forty-nine percent.
Then reversed.
Copies began moving to the release network.
Harper watched the progress.
“Once it reaches one hundred, Vittorio cannot contain it.”
Belini’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at her.
Father.
She answered on speaker.
Vittorio’s voice was calm.
“Belini, leave the chapel.”
She stared at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“You do not understand what you are doing.”
Her eyes moved to Emma.
Then Luca.
Then the video of Daniel’s last words.
“I understand seven years too late.”
May you like
She ended the call.
For the first time, she chose a side without asking what it would cost.
