Chapter 9 - Vittorio Bellini’s Last Bargain

The archive reached eighty-six percent before Vittorio made his final mistake.

He came back.

Not to the chapel.

To the Grand Aurelia.

The same ballroom where Emma had entered under another woman’s invitation less than twenty-four hours earlier.

He called Luca from the center of the empty dance floor.

“Come alone.”

Luca looked at the phone.

“No.”

Vittorio laughed.

“You sound like your father.”

“That was not an insult.”

“Bring Emma, then.”

Luca’s eyes hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she deserves to hear why Daniel died from the man who ordered it.”

Emma heard every word.

She held out her hand.

“Speaker.”

Luca did not want to.

He did it anyway.

Emma asked, “Why should I believe you?”

Vittorio answered immediately.

“Because guilt makes old men sentimental.”

Belini closed her eyes.

“That is not guilt,” she said. “That is vanity.”

Her father heard her.

“Belini.”

“I am here.”

“You disappoint me.”

She gave a thin smile.

“That may be the first useful thing I have done.”

They went to the hotel with Marco’s security already hidden throughout the building.

No guests.

No music.

Only chandeliers and the memory of midnight.

Vittorio stood near the terrace doors.

Adrian Saye stood beside him with a laptop case.

Luca stopped twenty feet away.

Emma stood beside him.

Not behind.

Vittorio looked at the brass key around her neck.

“So Daniel kept it.”

Emma’s voice was steady.

“You killed him.”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Belini flinched.

Luca did not.

Emma asked, “Why?”

“Because he confused accounting with morality.”

“He found you stealing.”

“He found a system that kept two families powerful.”

“You stole from both.”

Vittorio shrugged.

“Power is expensive.”

Luca’s expression cooled.

“And framing my father?”

“Insurance.”

Adrian shifted slightly.

Vittorio noticed.

“So was Adrian.”

Adrian looked at him.

That was new.

Vittorio smiled.

“You did not think you were a partner, did you?”

Adrian’s face changed.

Luca saw it.

So did Emma.

Vittorio continued because arrogant men often mistook silence for permission.

“Daniel was going to expose everything. Alessio would have survived the scandal. I would not. So Daniel had to disappear, and Alessio had to look compromised.”

Emma’s hands tightened.

“What about me?”

“You were a child.”

“Then why spend years watching me?”

“Because children become signatures.”

Luca’s jaw flexed.

Vittorio looked at him.

“Her twenty-fifth birthday destroys the old structure. She activates Daniel’s restitution trust. You become co-trustee. Billions in disputed holdings are frozen while courts investigate. Your ports suffer. My companies suffer. Everyone loses.”

Emma stared.

“Except the people you stole from.”

Vittorio’s smile disappeared.

There it was.

The one sentence he could not answer.

Marco’s voice sounded quietly in Luca’s earpiece.

Archive complete.

One hundred percent.

Luca looked at Emma.

She understood from his eyes.

Vittorio did not.

He opened one hand.

“Give me the key. Destroy the remaining originals. I will disappear. Emma gets money. You keep your empire. Belini keeps her name.”

Belini stepped forward.

“My name is the least important thing in this room.”

Her father stared at her.

“You are emotional.”

“No.”

She removed the Bellini family ring from her finger.

“I am finally embarrassed.”

She placed it on a table.

Adrian suddenly moved toward the side corridor.

Marco’s men appeared before he reached it.

He stopped.

Vittorio’s composure broke for the first time.

Luca said, “The archive finished uploading three minutes ago.”

Silence.

Vittorio looked at Judge Harper, who had entered through the opposite door.

“You.”

“Yes,” she said. “Me.”

“You cannot authenticate Daniel’s records without—”

“I already did.”

Vittorio turned to Adrian.

Adrian did not meet his eyes.

Emma realized.

“You recorded him.”

Adrian looked at her.

“For years.”

Vittorio’s face changed.

The hidden partner had built his own insurance.

Marco took the laptop case from Adrian.

Inside were backup drives.

Original signing keys.

Server logs.

Everything needed to connect the forged Moretti and Carter approvals to Vittorio.

Luca looked at Vittorio.

“The call last night.”

Vittorio said nothing.

“You told me I should have waited two years.”

A faint smile returned.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if she reached twenty-five quietly, the damage would have been legal and slow. Once she met you, I knew panic would make someone careless.”

Emma looked at him.

“You were right.”

Vittorio frowned.

She continued.

“You were careless.”

Outside, federal vehicles entered the hotel drive.

Judge Harper had made the calls before they arrived.

Vittorio looked at Luca as if waiting for Mafia justice.

Luca gave him something worse.

Public justice.

“Take him,” he told Marco.

Then he looked at Emma.

May you like

“Your father gets his record back.”

For the first time since midnight, she believed him.
