Chapter 3 - The Crash That Wasn’t an Accident

Damian stood at the hotel window.
Washington was waking below him.
He did not look at anyone.
“My father knew Marco was threatening us.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
“And Judge Hale?”
“He knew part of it.”
Walter opened one folder.
Inside was the original crash report.
Damian took it.
Brake failure.
Wet road.
One fatality.
Antonio Russo.
He looked up.
“I’ve seen this.”
Walter handed him another report.
Same date.
Same car.
Different conclusion.
Brake line cut.
Damian’s expression changed.
“Who wrote this?”
“A state investigator.”
“What happened to it?”
“Suppressed.”
“By Judge Hale?”
Walter nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Damian closed his eyes.
Elena spoke.
“Samuel said he was protecting you.”
Damian looked at her.
“Everyone protects me by lying.”
Elena did not argue.
Walter continued.
“Marco paid someone in the court system.”
“Judge Hale?”
“Not directly at first.”
Damian frowned.
“Then who?”
Walter showed him a deposit record.
A payment to an account owned by the judge’s campaign treasurer.
The money came from a shell company.
Russo Imports.
Damian knew it.
Marco had controlled it for twenty years.
Damian whispered:
“He bought the case.”
“Yes.”
Elena touched the folders.
“But Antonio left copies.”
“Where?”
“In box 609.”
Damian looked at the second key.
“Why didn’t you retrieve them?”
“Because the bank requires two keys.”
Walter placed his hand on the first key.
“Her key.”
Elena pointed to Damian’s.
“And yours.”
Damian stared.
“The key from the gala?”
“Yes.”
Walter said:
“Your mother gave me that key eight months ago.”
“Why?”
Elena answered:
“Because I knew I might disappear again.”
Damian’s face tightened.
“Why would you disappear?”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Because someone found me.”
“Marco?”
“No.”
Damian frowned.
“Then who?”
Elena looked at him carefully.
“Veronica.”
Silence.
Damian’s expression hardened.
“She said you called her.”
“I did.”
“But she found you first?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Her father’s old files.”
Damian looked at Walter.
Walter nodded.
“Samuel kept Elena’s relocation address.”
Damian turned back.
“Veronica went through his files.”
Elena nodded.
“She came to New Mexico.”
Damian froze.
“She met you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Nine months ago.”
Damian stared.
“She told me she only spoke to you by phone.”
Elena said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Damian walked away from the table.
“What happened when she came?”
Elena swallowed.
“She asked me not to contact you until after the wedding.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“She said your marriage would protect both families.”
“From what?”
Elena opened another folder.
A trust agreement.
Damian took it.
His father’s name.
His own.
Marco’s.
And one unfamiliar name.
VERONICA HALE.
Damian looked at Elena.
“Why is Veronica in my father’s trust?”
May you like
Elena answered:
“Because your engagement was never only about love.”
