Chapter 5 - Judge Hale’s Seventeen-Year Lie

Damian returned home that afternoon.

Not for the gala.

For Samuel Hale.

The ballroom was empty.

Flowers from the engagement party still covered the tables.

Judge Hale waited in the library.

Veronica stood near the fireplace.

Marco Russo was nowhere in sight.

Damian entered with Elena.

Samuel saw her.

His face collapsed.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

“Samuel.”

Damian closed the doors.

“No speeches.”

The judge looked at him.

“No excuses.”

Then Damian placed the trust on the desk.

“The amendment.”

Samuel looked down.

“You approved it.”

“Yes.”

“You suppressed my father’s crash report.”

“Yes.”

“You kept my mother’s address for seventeen years.”

“Yes.”

Damian stared.

“Why?”

Samuel sat slowly.

“Because Marco knew where Veronica was every day of her life.”

Veronica frowned.

“Dad.”

Samuel looked at his daughter.

“You were leverage.”

She stopped.

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Against you?”

“Yes.”

Samuel continued.

“After Antonio died, Marco had records tying me to the suppressed case.”

“You were corrupt.”

Samuel did not deny it.

“Yes.”

“You took money.”

“Yes.”

“To bury evidence.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him.

“And then you pretended hiding me was protection.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“At first, it was.”

Damian stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Samuel looked at Elena.

“Marco wanted her dead.”

Veronica covered her mouth.

Samuel continued.

“I convinced him disappearance was safer.”

“For whom?”

“For all of us.”

Damian’s voice hardened.

“No.”

Samuel nodded.

“You’re right.”

“For me.”

Silence.

He looked at Damian.

“I arranged Elena’s relocation.”

“New Mexico.”

“Yes.”

“I gave her another name.”

“Paid for housing.”

“Moved her whenever Marco got close.”

Damian frowned.

“So you did protect her.”

Samuel nodded.

“While also making sure she never returned.”

“Yes.”

“Because she could expose you.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him.

“You could have confessed.”

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“I was a judge whose career was built on appearing clean.”

“I told myself one more lie would protect everyone.”

Walter entered behind us.

“No.”

Samuel looked at him.

Walter said:

“You told yourself one more lie would protect your reputation.”

Samuel lowered his head.

Damian asked:

“Who told Marco Veronica found Elena?”

Samuel did not answer.

Veronica looked at him.

“Dad.”

He closed his eyes.

“I did.”

Her face changed.

“You told him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He already suspected.”

“That is not an answer.”

Samuel looked at her.

“He threatened to release documents showing I had taken payments.”

Veronica stared.

“So you traded Elena’s safety for your name.”

Samuel whispered:

“Yes.”

Damian looked at him.

“And now?”

Samuel opened a drawer.

He removed a flash drive.

“Now I give you everything.”

Damian did not take it.

“What is on it?”

“Payments.”

“Court files.”

“Property transfers.”

“Marco’s instructions.”

“And?”

Samuel hesitated.

Damian saw it.

“And?”

The judge whispered:

“Evidence your father was not Marco’s only victim.”

Elena looked sharply at him.

Damian frowned.

“Who else?”

Samuel answered:

“Your uncle had a partner.”

Damian stared.

“Who?”

May you like

Samuel looked at Veronica.

“Her mother.”
