Chapter 4 - The Marriage Clause

Damian read the trust twice.

Then a third time.

The clause was buried on page eighteen.

If Damian Russo married a direct descendant of Samuel Hale, voting control of three dormant holding companies would transfer automatically.

Damian looked at Walter.

“Why would my father put this here?”

Walter shook his head.

“He didn’t.”

Damian stared.

“Then who did?”

Elena answered.

“Marco amended the trust after Antonio died.”

“Illegally?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Walter said:

“Judge Hale approved the amendment.”

Damian laughed once.

A cold sound.

“So my uncle needed me to marry Veronica.”

Elena nodded.

“And Judge Hale needed it too.”

“Why?”

She pointed at the company names.

Damian recognized two.

The third meant nothing.

Hale-Russo Development Group.

He frowned.

“What is that?”

Walter opened another file.

“Land.”

“Where?”

“Federal redevelopment zones.”

Damian looked confused.

Elena explained.

“Years ago, Marco and Samuel bought property through shell companies.”

“Before public projects were announced.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“Inside information.”

“Yes.”

“And the trust hides ownership?”

Walter nodded.

“If you marry Veronica, control consolidates.”

Damian stared at the document.

“So our wedding launders the ownership structure.”

“In effect.”

He looked toward the hotel wall.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Damian asked:

“Did Veronica know?”

Elena hesitated.

Damian saw it.

“How much?”

“She knew the marriage mattered financially.”

His face changed.

“Did she know why?”

“I don’t know.”

Damian took out his phone.

Called her.

She answered immediately.

“Damian?”

“Did you know about the trust?”

Silence.

His voice dropped.

“Veronica.”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

“You knew before we got engaged.”

“Yes.”

Walter looked away.

Elena’s face tightened.

Damian continued.

“Did you know the marriage transferred control?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know your father approved the amendment?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Marco created it?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Damian’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Did you love me?”

Veronica began crying.

“Yes.”

“That was not the question I expected you to hesitate on.”

“I didn’t hesitate.”

“You did.”

Silence.

Damian continued.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because my father said the companies were legal.”

“And when did you stop believing him?”

No answer.

Damian looked at Elena.

Then asked:

“When you found my mother?”

Veronica whispered:

“Yes.”

Damian froze.

“You realized the companies were connected to her disappearance.”

“Yes.”

“And you still kept quiet.”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“By marrying me?”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“By getting control first.”

Damian frowned.

“What?”

Veronica took a breath.

“If we married, the voting shares would transfer to us.”

“To us?”

“Yes.”

“My father and Marco thought they could control you.”

“And you?”

“I planned to sign the shares back to you.”

Damian stared at the wall.

Elena whispered:

“She may be telling the truth.”

Damian ignored her.

He asked Veronica:

“Then why stop my mother from contacting me?”

Silence.

Veronica finally answered:

“Because Marco knew I found her.”

Damian stopped.

“What did you say?”

“He called me the day after I went to New Mexico.”

“How did he know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

Veronica whispered:

“My father.”

Damian looked at Elena.

Elena had gone pale.

Veronica continued.

“Marco said if I told you anything before the wedding, Elena would disappear again.”

Damian’s voice became very quiet.

“Did you tell your father where she was?”

“No.”

“Then how did he know?”

May you like

Veronica whispered:

“Because my father already knew.”
